Asda phone deal: £9 mobile with £10 credit on sale tomorrow

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

After a seriously affordable phone? A new Asda phone deal starting tomorrow will net you a new blower for £9 with £10 of credit pre-loaded. But just what quality of mobile can you possibly expect for under a tenner?

Well, in the case of the Asda phone deal, it's the Alcatel OT222 which the supermarket dubs "ultra-modern". We wouldn't go that far but if you're after a cheap phone to fling in your rucksack when you head on holiday or to a summer festival, the £9 phone will ably handle texts and calls.

The £9 Asda phone deal will give you an average of 50 texts or 33.5 minutes of calls on the Alcatel OT222 but you can always top up if you need more. It's hardly an HTC Desire or an iPhone 3GS but if you're prone to losing or breaking your phone it could be perfect.

There's 35,000 Alcatel OT222 flip phones up for grabs in the Asda phone deal. They go on sale from tomorrow through direct.asda.com and Asda store.

iPad won’t beat netbooks says Asus

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 07:30 AM PDT

The iPad won't beat netbooks according to Asus boss, Jerry Shen. While Asus has its own Eee Pad set to arrive in June, he's still backing little laptops like the Asus Eee PC to outsell the iPad. But then, he would say that wouldn't he?

During Asus's earnings call today, Jerry Shen took aim at the iPad, perhaps in revenge for the frequently dismissive comments Steve Jobs has made about netbooks.

He said: "The tablet PC is a cloud computing device. If it weren't for Apple, this market would develop a lot more slowly. Web-based applications for devices like the iPad tend to store their data in the cloud, whereas netbook users tend to store their applications and data on the device."

Despite its continuing love for netbooks, Asus plans to unveil the Eee Pad at Computex in June and has confirmed that it will come in several versions. One of them will run Windows 7 which, with the HP Slate seemingly set to be killed off, is good news for Microsoft.

Asus shifted 1.6m Eee PCs in the last quarter but is Shen's faith in the future of netbooks foolish? Will people still gobble up models like the two O2 3G laptops we saw yesterday or is the future tablet shaped?

Currys World Cup deal: cash back for England goals

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 07:00 AM PDT

Currys has hopped onto the World Cup bandwagon with the latest money back deal tied to England's chances. But this time rather than relying on the fairly remote chance of the Three Lions lifting the cup, it's all about goals…

Currys World Cup deal differs from the raft of other World Cup gadget deals we've seen because it'll reward you for the goals England score. Currys promises to pay back a £10 for every goal if you go into a store, buy an HD TV worth £599 or more and register online.

You need to buy a new telly from a Currys store between now and June 11 and hop online within 3 days of buying your new set to print out a certificate. Currys World Cup cashback offer excludes penalties and own goals so you won’t profit from poor defending or even perfect penalty scoring.

Once the World Cup is over, you'll just need to note down how many goals England have slotted in the back of the net and send your claim to Currys along with your receipt. That all needs to arrive no later than 7 August. If the Currys World Cup cashback offer had run during the tournament in 2006, you'd have netted £60 so don’t expect a huge windfall.

Apple plans invisible Macbook buttons

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Apple has plans for invisible Macbook buttons. It's not some kind of Harry Potter style wizardry but the next step in Jonathan Ive's quest to banish visible buttons for good. The new Apple patent application takes tech already at work in the Magic Mouse to the next level and could build invisible touch and pressure sensitive controls right into the body of future Macbook and Macbook Pro models.

The Apple patent application details making laser-cut, micro-perforated holes in the body of a device. That would allow for controls which would only become visible when you touched them. That would allow for entirely invisible Macbook controls and Apple details applications including indicators built into the laptop's lid and an invisible scroll wheel.

Apple brings up the example of the Magic Mouse in the patent application saying that the invisible Macbook controls would work a conventional track pad to detect how fast your finger is moving over it and would recognise multitouch gestures.

Apple has already implemented design features similar to the patent application's invisible Macbook buttons in the current Macbook generation where the standby lights glow through the aluminium. Jonathan Ive has previously said: "You should only see an indicator when it's indicating."

Apple closing LaLa: iTunes streaming incoming?

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Apple has announced that it's closing LaLa, the music streaming service it acquired in December last year. The LaLa website will close as of May 31, just ahead of the Apple World Wide Developers Conference on June 7. It finally looks like an iTunes streaming service is arriving imminently…

An iTunes Replay service to stream music and video from the cloud was reportedly demoed to labels and studios back in March and Apple also snaffled up a major new cloud data centre last year. Closing LaLa looks very much like the final move before it unveiling  iTunes streaming from the cloud.

Apple is giving iTunes credit to LaLa users who've built up online libraries and converting unused LaLa giftcards into iTunes Store credit. Until May 21, LaLa users will still be able to stream tunes from the service but then Apple is pulling the plug.

With the LaLa shutdown so close to WWDC, we’re really hoping that Apple is getting ready to unleash the iTunes streaming  service. It could be the perfect "one more thing" in the wake of the iPhone 4.0 leak and would put Apple in a much stronger position versus young upstarts like Spotify.

HP Slate Windows 7 ditched for webOS?

Posted: 30 Apr 2010 04:00 AM PDT

The HP Slate has been one of the most heavily touted iPad rivals but it may be joining the Microsoft Courier in the tablet death pool if new rumours are right. Is HP gearing up to get rid of the HP Slate Windows 7 tablet in favour of hardware running its latest toy, the Palm webOS?

HP Slate specs leaked only a few back and HP even released an HP Slate video promoting its Flash support. But now Techcrunch is reporting that HP sources say it's planning to drop the HP Slate altogether.

We first saw the HP Slate in the hands of Microsoft boss, Steve Ballmer, at CES but it seems HP may have gone off Windows 7 in the meantime. After buying Palm, it's now being suggested that we might see webOS tablets coming from HP instead.

Palm boss, Jon Rubenstein, recently predicted webOS tablets were on the way so it could be that Palm already has some tantilising tech in its labs that HP has now got its hands on. Perhaps the HP Slate just couldn't compete.

If the HP Slate is canned, it'll be another tablet scratched off the list of iPad rivals. But we've still got the Asus Eee Pad waiting in the wings and can expect a raft of other touchscreen foes for Apple to fend off if ARM's prediction of 50 tablets this year is even remotely right.

Do you think HP would be right to write off the HP Slate? Or are you gagging for a Flash-friendly tablet?
