Medal of Honor video: launch trailer revealed

Posted: 05 May 2010 09:00 AM PDT

The Medal of Honor launch trailer has arrived just as we promised earlier today when we reported the Medal of Honor release date. It's short and not so sweet giving more of a flavour of the tone of the Medal of Honor reboot than the actual gameplay.

The Medal of Honor video is entitled "Leave A Message" and that's literally what we see happening. It opens with a woman and her daughter on a family answering machine message. Then scene fades in and shows us soldiers on a helicopter flying in Afghanistan. We hear the message he left.

He tells his wife that he'll be OK: "We're rangers, this is what we do." The soldiers hit the ground and all hell breaks loose with the helicopters being shot down. Cue the portentous music and another glimpse of the bearded special ops soldier who’s starting to become the familiar face of the new Medal of Honor.

While the new Medal of Honor video is pretty hard hitting, the earlier Medal of Honor trailer shows a bit more of the gameplay we can expect. On the basis of this short trailer, one thing's for sure: EA's aiming to inject some realism into this modern Medal of Honor instalment.

Due October 15 | £39.99 | Medal of Honor

HP Envy 14: UK price mimics Macbook Pro

Posted: 05 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

The HP Envy 14 has just got a UK price tag slapped on it and thanks to a direct dollars to pounds conversion, it'll set you back the same as an entry level 13in Macbook Pro. It looks like it's not just the Macbook Pro’s looks that inspired the HP Envy.

Of course, HP Envy 14 has a few features on its side in a battle with the 13in Macbook Pro. There's that larger 14.5in screen, the option to add 3G and a newer Intel Core i5 processor versus the Macbook Pro's older Intel Core 2 Duo chip.

Apple claims the 13in Macbook Pro will give you up to 10 hours of battery life while the HP Envy plumps for 6 hours. That more powerful processor plus the ATI Mobility Radeon discrete graphics draw quite a lot of juice.

We've talked about the Apple tax plenty in the past and it seems HP has pulled a similar trick. If you changed the US price of $999 into pounds sterling, you'd get a much more palatable £660. Still, the HP Envy 14 remains a pretty desirable machine.

Which would you opt for if you had £999 in your back pocket? The HP Envy 14 or the 13in Macbook Pro?

Out July | From £999 | HP

Cupidtino: Apple fan dating site planned

Posted: 05 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Cupidtino, a dating site for Apple fans has been announced and it sounds like a truly frightening prospect. The name Cupidtino is a portmanteau of cupid and Apple's HQ in Cupertino but will a social network filled with other Apple fans really add up to love? Or will you just end up nattering about your shared lust for the aluminum unibody of a Macbook Pro or the tempting touchscreen of an iPad.

Cupidtino claims its in closed beta at the moment but the front page of the Apple fan dating site outlines its goals. It claims: "Diehard Mac and Apple fans often have a lot in common – personalities, creative professions, a similar sense of style and aesthetics, and of course a love of technology."

Cupidtino says it’ll launch on Apple platforms only when it's unveiled in June 2010. And inevitably it promises location-aware iPhone and iPad apps so you'll be able to track down lovelorn Apple fans around you.

Do you think a shared admiration for Steve Jobs and love for all things Mac is really a good basis for a love match? We can't help but think a mutual love of Macbooks would outweigh your admiration for each other. Do you even believe this dating site is the real thing?

Due June 10 | £TBC | Cupidtino (via Techcrunch)

Medal of Honor reboot dated

Posted: 05 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Medal of Honor will hit the UK on 15 October and is up for pre-order now, 25 days ahead of Call of Duty: Black Ops. The new Medal of Honor game will be the first in the series to ditch its World War 2 setting for modern day warfare. Whatever could have inspired that?

While Call of Duty: Black Ops is jumping back to Vietnam, Medal of Honor has taken a leaf out of the Modern Warfare 2 playbook. The game will be set in modern-day Afghanistan and feature a range of soldiers from ordinary infantry to elite Tier One Operators (the bearded guy in the press pic is one of the special ops chaps).

We're promised a new Medal of Honor trailer later today but we've had a good look at what to expect in the Medal of Honor teaser trailer. EA promises both a single player game and a multiplayer campaign which is being put together by DICE, the brains behind Battlefield Bad Company 2.

Will you be signing up for battle with Call of Duty: Black Ops or marching off with Medal of Honor?

Due October 15 | from £39.99 | Medal of Honor

Microsoft Communicator Mobile for Nokia to battle Blackberry

Posted: 05 May 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Microsoft Communicator Mobile, the first app to come out of a partnership between Nokia and Microsoft announced last year, has hit the Ovi Store. Destined for Nokia E-Series phones, Microsoft Communicator Mobile will wage war on Blackberry for control of workplace communication.

Targeted squarely at business folk, Microsoft Communicator Mobile lets Nokia E-Series owners see their colleagues statuses in real time then communicate with one click via IM, email, phone of text.  Its aim is to challenge Blackberry as the king of connected business chat.

Microsoft Communicator Mobile embeds your colleagues’ current statuses into your Nokia phone's contacts app. From there you can join or start IM sessions, begin calls and update your own status.

Currently only Nokia E52 and Nokia E72 phones are compatible with Microsoft Communicator Mobile but it'll be rolled out to more Nokia handsets soon. The app is available for free from the Ovi Store now if you're worried the IT department isn't already on the case.

Google Editions ebook store arriving this summer

Posted: 05 May 2010 04:00 AM PDT

Google Editions, the search giant's own ebook store, will launch by July. The Google digital book store will offer up ebooks via the web and go head to head with the Amazon Kindle and the Apple iBooks Store. Can Google Editions become your one-stop-shop for digital books?

Google Editions has long been rumoured but Google's Manager for Strategic Partner Development, Chris Palma, has finally confirmed its arrival to the Wall Street Journal.

Google Editions will feature up to 500,000 books at launch with Google have minted deals with partners who already work with it on Google Books. Ebooks from the Google Editions store will be available to download via your web browser meaning they shouldn’t be tied to any particular device.

By making Google Editions ebooks available in your browser, Google will be able to compete directly with iBooks on the iPad and the Amazon Kindle. The Sony Reader already sells itself on access to public domain titles via Google Books so it's likely to welcome the arrival of Google Editions.
