Logitech is Aware of Revue Frame Rate Issue

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:56 AM PDT

The Goole TV is a great device, bringing the full internet to your couch in a all new and innovate way is really a great thing, however if you have been using the Logitech Revue you may have noticed your video is less than stellar. Clearly there is an issue with the frame rate which watching TV, Logitech has acknowledged this and is currently investigating the issue.

The problem arises because the video is routed from your cable through the Revue before it’s output to the television, it appears that the Revue is causing frame dropping resulting in a staggering picture. In a response on the Google TV forums, Director of Logitech Revue customer care – Peter Evans said the following:

“Thank you for your feedback about Logitech Revue causing the TV picture to skip frames and for sharing information about your home entertainment setup. With your help we have been able to confirm that in some cases Logitech Revue is dropping video frames, resulting in a staggered image.

With Logitech Revue, it is our priority to provide a high quality TV experience, and we recognize that this issue is affecting your enjoyment. Logitech and the Google TV team are working hard to find the root cause of this issue and to develop a solution, which we will share with you as soon as it is available. We will keep you updated on our progress through this forum thread.

We do apologize for your TV experience being less than perfect.”

Hopefully we will be seeing a fix soon, because if you have experienced this in person you know it’s very annoying on a high definition display, almost making it unbearable.

Google Voice Search now in Russian, Polish, Czech, and Turkish

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:54 AM PDT

Google’s Voice Search is really ramping up! It’s been since June since we’ve seen additional voices added (See: French, German, Italian, and Spanish,), but now that there’s all sorts of people like skateboarders and chubby bunnies using the function, Google’s decided to up the ante. Now they’ve got voice recognition for Polish, Czech, Turkish, and Russia (where voice read you!)

Each of the languages available using Google Voice Search is workable only when you’ve got it activated. That means that if you’re speaking Polish, you can’t then search for something in Spanish without clicking the right switch. All of the new languages are preloaded on new Android devices, where all you’ve got to do is press and hold the search button to be able to speak your query and receive a result.

If you have Android 2.0 or higher and find that you don’t have Voice search installed, you can download the “Voice Search” app in the Android Market. Other phones can use this function too, devices such as iPhone can download the Google Mobile App with Voice Search from m.google.com

T-Mobile Comet Spotted in the Wild

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:35 AM PDT

TMO News has just received an array of images of the upcoming T-Mobile Comet formally known as the Huawei Ideos. The Comet will be an entry level device that’s running stock Android 2.2.

Other features of the device includes a 2.8-inch capacitive touch screen, 3 megapixel, camera, GPS, 3G, WiFi, and Bluetooth – pretty impressive for an “entry level” smartphone, especially with Android 2.2 which seems is hard for other competitors to keep up with. The Comet will launch on November 3rd on T-Mobile.

Google Instant Now Available in Beta For some devices

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:24 AM PDT

We first heard of Google Instant back in september, and even had a way to get it to work on some devices. Although this was only a temporary bug, and the link to Mobile Google with Instant was later pulled, we now are getting word that Google Instant is hitting some devices in beta form.

The image seen above has been what users of some Android devices are seeing when they navigate to Google via their Android devices. So far we have been told that users of the Droid, Droid x, and Incredible are all seeing the toggle switch for instant.

And if you forgot, or haven’t used Google in some time, here is what Google Instant is all about:

Click here to view the embedded video.

It’s likely more devices will be available to activate it later today. What about you? Do you see it? Let us know in the comments!

Slick UI Homescreen-Replacement Interface for Android Devices (CONCEPT)

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:23 AM PDT

Gorgeous! Look at the loveliness that’s been brewing in the creation boxes of the conceptual workers working on “Slick UI”! This Slick UI is similar to other apps such as LauncherPro or ADW in that it’s a homescreen-replacement launcher made to pretty-up and function-up the homescreen of your Android-based device. It aims to make your whole experience more “silky smooth, functional and highly customizable.”

Work JUST began on this project, and it already looks just splendid. Look at the couple preview pics above and the video below. The folks in charge of creating this magnificent beast will need testers in the future, which means YOU!, so get your finger clickers out and get ready to test, but also get ready to ask for what you’d like to see in an app such as this.

Click here to view the embedded video.

The video you’re about to see has a couple slides, a couple glances at what this app will consist of. It’ll have such things as the lovely app-drawer, customizable dock, and customizable content-wheel (called WonderWheel). And if you’d like to help out in any way other than in graphics (already taken care of by user Caemgen,) head over to the thread at XDA Developers and lend a hand.

Samsung Android PMP available for Pre-Order via French Online Retailer

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 10:16 AM PDT

The French online retailer Material.net has begun taking pre-orders for a new Android-powered Samsung PMP. The media player will be as like based off the Galaxy S series of devices, think iPod Touch compared to the iPhone, but with Samsung’s hardware.

Named the Samsung Galaxy Player 50, the device offers up a 3.2-inch 400×240 pixel display, 2-megapixel camera on the back, WiFI, Bluetooth, and GPS. We may expect for this to become a worldwide device with the possibility of this being the focus on the Samsung Event in the US on November 8th.

This marks Samsung’s venture even further into Apple territory (and market share). First with it’s incredible set of Galaxy S phones, then with the yet to be released Galaxy Tab, and now a PMP Samsung is giving everyone some more options especially us Android fans.

Check out the video of the device in action:

Samsung Event Planned for November 8, “New Android Device” Coming

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 09:53 AM PDT

Samsung has just started sending out invitations for an Android event that will be help November 8th in New York City. We’ve been invited to join Samsung Mobile as they unveil a new Android Device.

While details are scarce we can speculate what might be coming from the invitation graphic. The Stock ticker background could mean that this may be a business-focused device with many multimedia options. Because it’s unknown what the new device is, there is still a possibility that it may be the official unveiling of the US version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab that will hit carriers later that week.

Hopefully this is a completely new device, comments suggest that it may even be the unveil of the Samsung MB2 media player that we started to hear about earlier this year. This will be samsung even further into competition with Apple with it’s own cell phone, tablet, and media player. We’ll be there with live updates November 8th, so stay tuned!

Android Market passes 100,000 app mark

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 08:38 AM PDT

Nothing like starting Monday with a bang, and if you’re Google that bang is the news that there are now 100,000 apps available in the Android Market.  The news was broken by the company’s AndroidDev Twitter account; we’re guessing there’ll be an official announcement later on today, but so far the official blog is yet to be updated.

Despite the milestone, the Android Market still trails the iOS App Store, which Apple claims contains 250,000 titles.  Still, there’s more to a successful download store than sheer bulk: it’s the titles inside it that count.

PC World's test involved Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in 13 major cities in all regions of the country during December 2009 and January 2010. In all, roughly 9,000 individual tests of Sprint’s 3G service were conducted from 280 testing locations. In laptop-based tests, Sprint tied with another carrier for first in 3G network reliability.

Hello Vino lets Android users pick the right wine

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 05:01 AM PDT

I am not a wine drinker at all. I am not a fan of the taste of most adult beverages and tend to stick with Dr. Pepper for the most part. If you are a wine fan of the sort that worries about pairing the correct wine with your dinner or other meal a new app is available that will help you pick the right bottle.

The app is from a company called Hello Vino and it is on the Android Market right now at no cost. The app will pick the right wine for your needs after the user answers a few simple questions. The app was previously on the iPhone and the company says that it is used 500,000 times each month.

The app is being positioned for users that might be looking to give wine for a Christmas gift. The app will work for buying wine in stores and choosing the right glass at your favorite restaurant.

Acer Liquid Metal S120 hits FCC aims at AT&T

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 04:43 AM PDT

We have been following the Acer Liquid Metal S120 smartphone for a while now. A couple pics of the smartphone surfaced last week and it looks pretty darn cool. You may have been waiting for more info on the device like the carrier that you can get the thing from.

Engadget has spied the device over on the FCC website as it makes its way through the regulations and tests needed to hit the market. We have been gobbling rumors for a while now about the hardware with things like a 3.6-inch 800 x 480 screen, 800MHz Qualcomm processor, and other things surfacing.

With the smartphone hitting, the FCC we now know that it will be operating on AT&T bandwidths with support for GSM/EDGA 850/1900 networks along with WCDMA Band II and V support. The FCC also confirms that the OS will be Android 2.2 and the device will have GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi. The smartphone should hit the UK this month.

Viper SmartStart car alarm gets price cut and new features with version 2.0

Best Buy confirm Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi-only model

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 01:51 AM PDT

We’ve already seen leaks pointing to a November 14 release of the Sprint version of Samsung’s Galaxy Tab; now we have pricing for the 7-inch Froyo slate.  Pocketables spotted Best Buy listings of the Tab in both WiFi-only and 3G/WiFi versions for Sprint and Verizon, complete with the promise of a starting price of $499.99.

Both contract and month-to-month plans will be on offer.   It’s not clear which of the SKUs that lowest price applies to, at this stage, though since Verizon has already confirmed a $600 price for their month-to-month version, it depends on how much Sprint are willing to subsidize compared to how great an amount Samsung can shave off by leaving out 3G.

The 1409447 WiFi-only Galaxy Tab is available in silver, as is the 1411072 Sprint 3G version; the 1411045 Verizon 3G model will be black, instead.

Adobe AIR 2.5 released; Over 2m Android Flash Player 10.1 downloads

Posted: 25 Oct 2010 12:49 AM PDT

Adobe has pushed out a new version of AIR, v2.5, their cross-platform application framework, with manufacturers including Acer, HTC, Motorola and Samsung expected to ship the runtime pre-installed on a variety of devices including tablets and smartphones later this year and early in 2011.  The company will also be launching the Adobe InMarket, a distribution service for developers wanting to get their cross-platform apps into various download stores without the hassle of individual submissions.

As for AIR 2.5 itself, it now has accelerometer, camera, video, microphone, multitouch and gesture support, along with geo-location, native-browser control display for HTML and .SWF integration, and SQLite support.  There’s also hardware acceleration for Adobe AIR across “all major silicon partners”, including Broadcom Corporation, Intel, NVIDIA, ST Microelectronics, Trident, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and others.

Meanwhile, Adobe also confirmed that Flash Player 10.1 has been downloaded more than 2 million times from the Android Market.

Press Release:

Adobe Extends AIR Applications Across Screens

Adobe AIR 2.5 for Televisions, Mobile Devices and Desktops Unveiled; Adobe InMarket Launched

Adobe MAX 2010
LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–At Adobe MAX, Adobe's worldwide developer conference, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) today announced Adobe® AIR® 2.5 software for televisions, tablets, smartphones and desktop operating systems. A key element of the Adobe Flash® Platform, AIR enables developers to leverage existing code to create and deliver standalone applications across devices and platforms. Adobe AIR now supports smartphones and tablets based on BlackBerry® Tablet OS, Android™, iOS, and desktops including Windows®, Macintosh and Linux® operating systems. In addition, Samsung will be the first television manufacturer to integrate support for Adobe AIR 2.5 in Samsung SmartTVs while Acer, HTC, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and others are expected to ship the runtime pre-installed on a variety of devices including tablets and smartphones later this year and early 2011.

"The HTC Experience is centered on delighting our customers and the addition of Flash Player 10.1 to many of our phones such as the Droid Incredible by HTC, HTC Evo4G and HTC Desire demonstrates this"
With Adobe AIR, developers are able to use familiar tools including Adobe Flash® Professional CS5, Adobe Flash Builder™ and Flex to build rich standalone applications. Hundreds of them are already available on Android Market, Intel AppUp center and Apple's App Store today. In addition to AIR 2.5, Adobe also unveiled Adobe InMarket today, a new service that allows developers to easily distribute and sell their applications across different device types on app stores from Acer, Intel, and others. Adobe InMarket operates seamlessly in the background and allows end users to download applications directly from the storefront. For more information visit Adobe InMarket.

"With the release of AIR 2.5, more than 3 million Flash developers can now build a single game or application and easily deploy it across multiple application stores and devices," said David Wadhwani, senior vice president, Creative and Interactive Solutions Business, Adobe. "This is a huge step forward for developers looking to build rich, engaging applications but who have historically had to incur the cost of building them separately for each device and platform."

AIR 2.5 enables rich application experiences through a series of new features, including support for accelerometer, camera, video, microphone, multi-touch and gestures. Support for geo location allows developers to create location-based applications and services. AIR 2.5 is also able to display native-browser controls within the application allowing for the integration of HTML and .SWF content. With SQLite support, developers can easily store and cache databases inside an AIR application. In addition, hardware acceleration for Adobe AIR is enabled across all major silicon partners including Broadcom Corporation, Intel, NVIDIA, ST Microelectronics, Trident, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and others.

Partner Feedback

"The HTC Experience is centered on delighting our customers and the addition of Flash Player 10.1 to many of our phones such as the Droid Incredible by HTC, HTC Evo4G and HTC Desire demonstrates this," said John Wang, chief marketing officer, HTC Corporation. "We are excited to be bringing a great phone experience and the collaborative results of the millions of AIR developers around the world into the hands of HTC's customers."

"As a longtime partner of Adobe, we are excited that users will have the opportunity to enjoy AIR applications and content on our devices," said Christy Wyatt, corporate vice president, software and services product management, Motorola. "Since July, we’ve announced seven Android-based smartphones with Flash Player 10.1 support, including the first phone with Flash out of the box. AIR 2.5 is the perfect complement to Flash Player giving customers the freedom to choose between rich-content experiences inside and outside the browser."

"The BlackBerry Tablet OS offers developers a highly optimized and flexible platform that integrates Adobe AIR with high- performance audio, video and graphics optimizations, as well as support for a WebView class and native C++ extensions," says Tyler Lessard, VP Global Alliances & Developer Relations, Research In Motion. "By building tight integration with Adobe tools into our BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR, developers are now able to optimize their applications for the tablet form-factor and deliver an enhanced end-user experience. We are excited by the breadth of content that the development community will be able to deliver for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet using our new development tools and AIR."

Flash Player 10.1

Already one of the top free apps on Android Market, with more than 50,000 users giving it a 4.5-out-of-5 star rating, Flash Player 10.1 brings rich Flash based content to mobile devices inside the browser. The runtime is now certified on close to a dozen Android devices and will become available on dozens more over the coming weeks and months. Adobe also announced that Flash Player 10.1 was downloaded more than 2 million times from Android Market. In addition to Android Market, the runtime is distributed directly by device manufacturers and operators via pre-installs and operating system upgrades. Flash Player 10.1 is available on Android and Google TV today, with BlackBerry platform, HP webOS 2.0, future versions of Windows® Phone, LiMo, MeeGo, and Symbian OS also expected to support Flash Player 10.1. For a list of devices supported today, visit Adobe Flash Player 10.1 certified devices.

Flash Platform Tools

Adobe also announced previews of developer tools that make the process of multiscreen development more streamlined. With new releases of Flash Platform tools, including an AIR 2.5 software development kit (SDK), developers can build mobile and multiscreen applications for smartphones, tablets and televisions, while maximizing design and development productivity. An update to the open source Flex framework provides developers with a common framework for building Web, desktop and now mobile applications. Developers can build standalone mobile Flex applications with the same ease and quality as on Web and desktop platforms. For details visit http://www.adobe.com/go/flexsdk_preview/.

A preview release of Adobe Flash Builder adds capabilities for developers to build applications using familiar languages, components and tools, which help lower the cost of developing multiscreen applications.
