Orange HTC Desire Android 2.2 update delayed to mid-September

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 09:03 AM PDT

Bad news for Orange UK customers waiting for Android 2.2 Froyo on their HTC Desire.  On the same day that Verizon began pushing out Froyo for the Droid Incredible, the UK carrier has announced a delay in getting the update ROM from HTC.  As such, the Android 2.2 update for the Orange HTC Desire now isn’t expected to be released until mid-September 2010.

Orange hasn’t given any specific reasons for the delay, but does insist that it’s nothing to do with the carrier’s own services on the handset.

Verizon OTA Android 2.2 Froyo update for Droid Incredible is out now

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 08:18 AM PDT

Verizon has confirmed to us that the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the HTC Droid Incredible has begun going out today as an OTA update.  The updated ROM will not only upgrade the Droid Incredible’s core OS but add in the Adobe Flash Player 10.1 together with 3G mobile hotspot functionality and add 720p HD video recording to the smartphone’s camera.

The update is going out OTA rather than as a download, so you may have to wait a while before you get the on-device alert to say it’s ready for installation.  We’d recommend using a WiFi connection to download it, too, rather than cellular data.  Unfortunately there’s no way to artificially prompt the update, Verizon tells us; patience is a virtue, we guess.  There’s more information on the update here.

U.S. Cellular launch HTC Desire for $200

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 07:51 AM PDT

We’re big HTC Desire fans here at Android Community, and so it comes as great news to hear that U.S. Cellular have finally got around to selling the smartphone in the US.  Hitherto Europe/Asia only, the Desire is priced at $199.95 after a mail-in rebate and presuming a new, two-year agreement; it’s not available on prepaid plans.

The actual model is the so-called Super LCD variant that HTC switched to producing after facing ongoing AMOLED panel shortages.  Otherwise it’s the same as we’ve seen before, so you get a 5-megapixel autofocus camera, HTC Sense interface, Android 2.1, 1GHz Snapdragon CPU and an 8GB microSD card in the box.

Nokia N900 gets Android 2.2: calling, data, more [Video]

Posted: 27 Aug 2010 02:20 AM PDT

Work to put Android onto the Nokia N900 – more commonly found running the company’s own open-source OS, Maemo – has already resulted in a few experimental ROMs, but now the NITDroid project reckons they’ve got something almost stable enough for everyday use.  Their latest release adds in voice call functionality, which most people would consider pretty important for their cellphone.

Incoming and outgoing calls are supported, as are various forms of data connection, and the whole thing is based on Android 2.2 Froyo which means it’s actually potentially running a version of the OS better than the actual Android device many people are living with now.  All of the Google apps are supported, and of course there’s the N900’s hardware keyboard to think about too.  Most frustrating, though, is the apparent absence of camera support, since the N900’s optics are pretty darn good.  Still, you can download and have a play here.

Samsung Fascinate Training Documents Hit the Internet

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 02:34 PM PDT

Okay, this is getting ridiculous. After informing you that the Samsung Galaxy S variant for Verizon has been hitting warehouses around the country, and now a suspected release date gets tipped for September 9th, we now have the training documents from Verizon making their way onto the Internet. Basically, ladies and gentlemen, we can start counting down the days until this Super AMOLED-toting handset makes its debut on the largest wireless carrier here in the States.

Thanks to a Verizon Ninja, Boy Genius Report was able to get their hands on the training documents for the Samsung Fascinate. It goes on to confirm that the device will indeed have a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, the 1GHz Hummingbird processor under the hood, launch with Android 2.1, and having a 5MP camera on the back. The documents say that full support for Flash Player will be available by the end of 2010, so that’s when we can probably expect Android 2.2 to make it to the Fascinate (and the other US-based Galaxy S devices?).

The Fascinate will also launch with Verizon’s NFL Mobile application, Amazon Kindle pre-loaded, and Visual Voicemail, along with Backup Assistant. It will also come with Bing Maps and Google Maps with Navigation (thankfully). So, it looks like the standard bloatware is there, along with all of the good features we expect. Check out the source link for more screens of the leaked documents.

Samsung Fascinate for Verizon Due on September 9th?

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 02:26 PM PDT

There’s a lot of question marks surrounding the Samsung Fascinate. Verizon’s variation of the Samsung Galaxy S line-up has yet to get an official launch date, even as the other major wireless carriers have already launched their own device, or are getting ready to in a matter of days. But, that looks to be coming to a swift stop, if these new leaked images are any indication.

We just told you that the Fascinate is heading into warehouses around the country, which means that Verizon is probably getting ready to launch the device. After all, can’t give folks devices if the wireless carrier doesn’t have them. So, as we should have expected, right on the heels of that leak we’ve got an internal Verizon document outlining when the Fascinate will be ready to be ordered by Verizon employees. Along with that bit of information, though, comes the mention of a September 9th launch date.

That would make sense, as that would be a major Android-based handset released in September. And if Verizon wants to remain the Android leader here in the United States, they can’t let any time slip by without a handset worth mentioning getting released. The Fascinate is a great way to make sure that people’s expectations for Verizon and Google’s mobile Operating System are still high — even if they are the last major carrier to launch it. Right now, this is still a rumor, so stay tuned. Hopefully we get an official statement soon.

HTC EVO 4G for Sprint with Android 2.2 Now Rooted

Posted: 26 Aug 2010 12:09 PM PDT

That didn’t take long at all. Not that it should have, considering the amount of work being put into rooting all the Android devices out there. Well, maybe not all of them — just the good ones, right? In any event, it’s just become known that the EVO, manufactured by HTC and Sprint’s first 4G device, has just been rooted. And that means that the official Android 2.2 build for the handset has been cracked, and super user permission is now permitted.

As usual, the folks over at XDA managed to get the root over and done with, but since this is the first root for the latest build of Android on the device, it’s not your simple “click this and your done” method. You’ll have to follow the steps outlined through the source link if you want to get your root on, but as usual, please be careful. You never know what may happen.
