HTC Desire HD pops up on Amazon

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 08:41 AM PDT

UPDATE: And the HTC Desire HD listing has been pulled from Amazon. Pretty damning evidence, if you ask us.

Whoa. The HTC Desire HD isn’t official yet – we’re not even certain that it’s going to be announced at next month’s mystery press event – but er, something called the HTC Desire HD is sitting on Amazon’s UK site already.

A reader has tipped us in the direction of Amazon’s UK site, where a mysterious product called HTC 99HLZ001-00 ACE/Desire HD is listed as out of stock, and priced at £415. The HTC Desire HD reportedly has the codename of HTC Ace, so it looks like this could indeed be an early sign of the HTC Desire HD, believed to be an Android 2.2 phone for Europe with an epic 4.3-inch screen.

If you’ll recall, the HTC Desire HD was previously spotted on the SuperEtrader site, but this Amazon listing actually predates it (7 July), suggesting this isn’t a fan made fraud. We’ll hopefully find out for sure soon. Bring on the beast phone!

[Thanks, DocM!]

Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta teased

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 08:02 AM PDT

A Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta hasn't been announced yet but sculling around on the official Call of Duty: Black Ops website today, we stumbled upon a little tease that suggests it's not far away. Read on for the results of our digging about the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta…

Head to the Call of Duty website, choose to sign up for a free user account and you'll get a list of reasons it's worth your while to register. Sixth on the list is this: "First-in-the-world access to REDACTED – you are not yet cleared for this information."

That's hardly the Enigma code is it? Treyarch released a multiplayer beta for its last Call of Duty outing, Call of Duty: World At War, so doing the same for Call of Duty: Black Ops seems like a safe bet.

Trudging through the Twitter feed of Treyarch's community manager Josh Olin also suggests the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta is in the works. Back in June, he confirmed that "an MP BETA is being considered" while last week he warned followers to avoid fake Call of Duty: Black Ops beta keys saying: "There's no way to play yet…"

While we're waiting for confirmation that the Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer is incoming at least we know zombies are definitely shambling our way.

Are you itching to play a Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer beta or are you all about Medal of Honor (Taliban-controversy and all)? Let us know which will have you conscripted this Christmas in the comments…

Nokia Comes With Music gets an Ovi makeover

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 07:30 AM PDT

Nokia Comes With Music is off to the great gig in the sky. Like Hendrix, Lennon and the drummer from Spinal Tap, however, true music legends never really die – they just get rebranded.

Nokia Comes with Music has always seemed a bit separate from Nokia’s other products under the Ovi label. That is set to change, however. Comes With Music will soon become part of the Ovi family and change its name to Ovi Music Unlimited.

Check Out Our Most Recommended

The plain old Ovi Music is still going, and will continue to be a source of downloadable tracks that you can play on your PC or other device as well as your phone. Ovi Music Unlimited will take Comes With Music’s ‘all you can eat’  model and make it a proper part of the Ovi Music service, with over 11 million tracks on offer. As before, users will be able to keep downloaded tracks once their subscription ends.

Nokia are also promising a redesign of the site and client apps to reflect the change in brand as well as offering a faster way to search for music.

There is no date confirmed for the switch-over as yet, but Nokia will be notifying subscribers by email to let them know what they have to do, if anything. In the meantime, Nokia recommend not changing any of your account settings – particularly your contact details – to help ensure that the regime change goes as smoothly as possible.

HTC Desire Froyo update: Photo walkthrough

We adored the HTC Desire when it was rocking Android 2.1, but now version 2.2 has hit, we’re loving it even more. The HTC Desire Froyo update is unobtrusive and patches an awful lot of minor niggles, while keeping general navigation almost identical.

HTC Desire HD launch: 5 other things it could be

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 07:00 AM PDT

“Come and see what HTC have dreamt up”.

HTC has a mystery announcement to make on September 15th that we are pretty sure is going to be about the HTC Desire HD. Not so fast, however. HTC loves a surprise and it is possible that it has something else up its corporate sleeves. What could it be? Here are our five best guesses..

HTC Desire HD

Ok, this has to be the number one choice. The HTC Desire HD has been riding waves of rumour and speculation for weeks and if HTC don’t release it soon then we may have to conclude that it was all a mirage. Plus, an Engadget tipster noticed that you can see what looks a lot like the back of the HTC Desire HD as seen in several leaked shots.

Still, HTC phones do look quite similar from the back, so lets not jump to any conclusions.

HTC Windows Phone 7 debut

HTC are among the manufacturers who have confirmed they are working on Windows Phone 7 handsets. Windows Phone 7 isn’t set for launch until October, but some handsets are rumoured to be lined up to debut at IFA in Berlin next month. We would be surprised if HTC didn’t haev a Windows Phone 7 device prepped and ready.

HTC Vision

The blurry shot of the supposed HTC Vision tickled our fancy when we saw it. Essentially, this seems like a regular-size HTC Desire, but with a slide-out keypad like the Motorola Droid. We loved the Desire’s on-screen keyboard, but there are times (when playing games, for example) when a real keypad would be useful.
HTC Dream 2

Still on a keyboard tip, that ‘dreamt’ in the invitation made us instantly think of the HTC Dream – the phone better known over here as the G1 & the original Android handset. The G1’s slider form factor looks hopelessly clunky compared to newer models like the Desire, but we would love to see a 2010/11 redesign of the old classic.

Android Tablet

This is a bit more out there but hey – we can dream. HTC could make an amazing Android tablet running Android 2.2 and a scaled-up version of the HTC Sense interface. Sense may not be to everyone’s taste, but it has provided a unified look and feel across a range of handsets. Extending that slickness to a tablet could be a real winner and prove to be the elusive special sauce required to give the iPad a run for its money.

Star Wars saga headed for Blu-ray: purists prepare to grumble!

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 06:35 AM PDT

The entire Star Wars saga is finally hitting Blu-ray later this year. George Lucas revealed the plans during the Celebration V Star Wars convention this weekend. The owner of Hollywood's bushiest beard (and creator of Jar Jar Binks) says all six films will have an HD overhaul and arrive next year.

Lucas announced the Star Wars Blu-ray release in a Q+A with The Daily Show's Jon Stewart. "I wish I could say it was coming out this year," he said, "but it will come out next year."

Check Out Our Most Recommended

It's not all good news. Purists won't be pleased to discover that the Blu-ray versions of the original Star Wars trilogy will feature the Special Edition versions. That means more "Greedo fired first" arguments and having to sit through the dubious comedy of Han Solo standing on Jabba's tail.

Lucas also promised more extra features for the Star Wars Blu-ray releases. A deleted scene from Return of the Jedi featuring Luke building his own Lightsaber while dear 'ol daddy Vader tries to lure him to the Dark Side was shown during the Celebration V hinting at the kind of extras we can expect.

After numerous rereleases will you be plumping for Star Wars on Blu-ray? Or has Lucas already taken his last payment from you? Hit the comments and let us know.

Nokia N8 release date pushed back to October?

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 06:03 AM PDT

The Nokia N8 release date seems like a moving target. Last week we reported that the Nokia N8 release date and pricing had popped up on British retailers' sites with an August ETA. Now Play has shifted the goal posts, pushing back its Nokia N8 release date prediction. Will we have to wait longer for the Symbian ^3 smartie?

It feels like we've been talking about the Nokia N8, with its 12MP camera, HD video skills and 3.5in AMOLED touchscreen, for decades. Last week's indication that we might get our hands on it later this month was great but it seems those listings may have been a little premature.

Check Out Our Most Recommended

Eagle-eyed Electricpig reader Philip has been watching the Nokia N8 pre-release pages closely and spotted that Play shifted the Nokia N8 release date from August 2010 to October 8 over the weekend. Other retailers are still predicting an August arrival but the specificity of Play's prediction makes us wonder.

Nokia World hits London on the 14 and 15 September so sticking the Nokia N8 release date in early October does make sense. The Finn's could unveil the finished Nokia N8 at the conference and give themselves two weeks to get it shipping.

If you're not sure why the Nokia N8 is so eagerly-awaited, try our Nokia N8 photos and Nokia N8 video for a closer look. Are you excited to get your hands on a new Nokia? Or have other phones distracted you during the long wait for Symbian ^3 to drop?

Stalker 2 officially in development

Posted: 16 Aug 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Stalker fans rejoice, assuming you have it in you, what with the radiation and the lack of food. GSC Game World has confirmed that Stalker 2 – the first full sequel to the post-apocalyptic scavenge-em-up – is on the way.

The original Stalker was a thrilling, well crafted and thoroughly depressing trudge through broken, radiation-scoured landscapes and abandoned buildings looking for abandoned artefacts and scientific knowledge. Several add-on packs have been released which have expanded the Chernobyl setting and added new NPCs and missions but the core sandbox game has remained the same.

Check Out Our Most Recommended

We don’t know what GSC Game World have planned for Stalker 2, but CEO Sergiy Grygorovych posted to the company’s official bog to say that “After the official sales of the series exceeded 4 million copies worldwide, we had no doubts left to start creating a new big game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. This will be the next chapter of the mega-popular game players expect from us.”

The original game was based on a Sci-Fi novella by Boris and Arkady Strugatsky called ‘Roadside Picnic’. This story contained references to the post-nuke world being observed by alien visitors and is by some degree weirder than the more generic apocalypse offered in the game. Could we about to see the Stalker universe get a dose of Fallout’s Mothership Zeta? Let’s hope not, as that was a bit rubbish.

No, our guess is more mutants, new missions and an even more comprehensive number of ways that you can die horribly. GSC are promising an all-new cross platform game engine so we would hope to see this on consoles as well as PC.
