Palm CEO: tablets and rival webOS phones could happen

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 09:30 AM PDT

Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein has said that the Palm Pre’s webOS platform could one day be used on tablets and other non-phone devices – and could even appear on other manufacturers’ hardware.

Rubinstein told SlashGear that keeping webOS restricted to Palm-made devices like the Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus and Palm Pixi was “not something we’re religious about”, and that licensing the operating system to other companies “would make sense” if there were the right business model and working relationship in place.

It’s not exactly an indicator that we’ll definitely see an HTC or Samsung-branded smartphone carrying webOS in the near future, but it certainly leaves the door pretty much wide open for that to happen.

And it might not just be mobile phones that webOS appears on. According to Rubinstein, webOS was designed as a “mobile device OS” rather than simply a smartphone OS, and that Palm was watching the tablet market. He didn’t rule out Palm – or possibly a Palm licensee – serving up a webOS-toting tablet in the future.

So there you have it: a pretty clear indication that Palm is keeping its options open when it comes to the future of webOS. We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for any developments in this story.

Nokia N8 delayed?

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:30 AM PDT

The Nokia N8 monster smartphone was a no show at yesterday’s handset launch, but we might have to wait longer than a few weeks for the much rumoured phone. A new rumour tips the supposed Symbian 3 phone to launch as late as the Summer.

The Nokia N8 is still not official, but a few choice spyshots last month point to a 12 megapixel smartphone with no keyboard. Recent leaks had alleged that the Nokia N8 was due for an April unveiling, but now one tipster says it might not appear until July.

Nokia N8 12MP cameraphone spied!

GSM Arena’s insider says that O2 UK was ready to stock the Nokia N8 from the end of May, but that target window has now been pushed back by a month and a half. GSM Arena’s broken Nokia news before, outing the first image of the Nokia E75, so it’s got a track record on Espoo spoilers.

That’s disappointing news if the case across networks, as it’s approaching a year and a half since the Nokia N97 was announced, and we’ve seen no top end Symbian replacement during that time.

Of course, Nokia usually announces new phones several months before global shipping, so we could still hear official word on a Nokia N8 later this month. Fingers and toes crossed!

Samsung NB30 Touch netbook packs a touchscreen

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 08:00 AM PDT

The Samsung NB30 Touch netbook isn’t the first little laptop we’ve seen with a touchscreen built right in (Asus nabbed that claim with the Eee PC T91), but its lack of folding tablet powers is more than made up for by its rugged, durable shell. Is this the ultra portable the butter fingered have been praying for?

As you might have guessed from the name, the 10.1-inch Samsung NB30 Touch has a finger friendly display, for prodding your way around, which we’ve found to be surprisingly intuitive on netbooks, even if they’re running the much older Windows XP (The Samsung NB30 Touch runs Windows 7 Starter edition though).

Samsung Genio netbook incoming?

The internal hardware on the Samsung NB30 Touch isn’t much to shout about, admittedly (Intel’s latest Atom N450 processor, 1GB of RAM, a not especially sharp 1024×600 resolution screen and a bog standard 160GB or 250GB hard drive. But the Samsung NB30 Touch should withstand more than a few knocks and bumps, thanks to its anti-shock hard drive, reinforced case and liquid resistant keyboard. In fact, the Samsung NB30 Touch sounds like a great secondary machine for spies toting Panasonic’s counter-terrorist Toughbooks.

The Samsung NB30 Touch is on sale in Italy now, priced up at €399 (£350). There’s no word on a UK launch just yet, but we’ve got a query hanging with Samsung’s British branch now so we’ll update when we get more details.

iPad UK Vodafone, Orange and O2 deals confirmed!

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 07:23 AM PDT

UPDATE: iPad UK plans will be offered by Orange too, the network has confirmed in a near identical statement to Vodafone and O2.

The iPad UK 3G models will get dedicated price plans from Vodafone and O2, the networks have officially revealed. Read on for the details.

Just hours after Apple delayed the iPad UK and international launch, Vodafone and O2 have separately, in almost identically worded statements, announced that they will “offer dedicated iPad price plans for all models”, from the end of May in the UK, and in Spain, Australia, Germany and Italy for the former as well.

iPad UK launch delayed

The news means that you’ll be able to buy an iPad UK 3G model (hopefully at the same time as the Wi-Fi only models) and insert a micro SIM in for internet access on the tablet wherever you are.

It’s not clear whether Vodafone and O2’s plans for the iPad UK 3G models mean they’ll sell the SIM cards only, or subsidise the iPad’s price in exchange for a contract over a set period of time. In the US, the iPad 3G is sold unlocked, so people can buy web access as they want it.

We’ve contacted Vodafone and O2 for more details on the iPad UK price plans, but spokespeople for both have said no more information can be given out at this time.

iPad Flash decision “hurts customers” says Adobe boss

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 07:00 AM PDT

The iPad Flash battle really doesn't look like it's going to end anytime soon. Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen took to the Fox Business channel to declare that Apple's decision to deny iPad Flash support "hurts customers". It doesn’t look like Apple or Adobe are about to give peace a chance any time soon.

With the UK iPad delay, we've got even longer to watch Apple and Adobe battle it out over iPad Flash support in America. Interviewed on Fox Business, Shantanu says Apple's decision to keep Flash off the iPad "isn't really a technology decision as much as it is a business decision".

He continued: "[Apple] has chosen to keep their system proprietary and closed which is why they're not supporting Flash and I think that hurts customers." He said stopping iPad Flash support would damage Apple as "companies like Google, RIM and Palm are going to releasing version of Flash on smartphones and tablets in the second half of the year."

The battle between Apple and Adobe over iPad Flash support is creating a wider split between organisations willing to offer iPad specific sites (including video provider Brightcove and Flickr) and firms sticking with Flash. The HP Slate will feature Flash support while Google Chrome OS tablets will have Flash built-in.

The Adobe/Apple clash over Flash has been running for some time but really kicked off in earnest in February this year when allegedly Steve Jobs slammed Google and Adobe at an Apple event. Jobs made a big point at the iPhone OS 4.0 event that iAds use HTML5 not Flash.

New MacBook Pro: Steve Jobs defends upgrade tweaks

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 06:45 AM PDT

The new MacBook Pro launched just yesterday, but some are already wondering out loud (and via email) why Apple has retained older Intel Core 2 Duo processors in the 13-inch model. After all, the 15 and 17-inchers get spanking new Intel Core i5 and i7 CPUs. Well, Steve Jobs has spoken to reveal the reasoning! Read on to find out what he said…

After one inquiring mind thought to email Apple CEO Steve Jobs about the decision to retain old chips in the new MacBook Pro, his Steve-ness replied with a typically curt message: “We chose killer graphics plus 10 hour battery life over a very small CPU speed increase. Users will see far more performance boost from the speedy graphics.”

So there you have it. According to Apple’s head honcho, fitting the 13-inch new MacBook Pro with an i5 or i7 processor would have meant worse graphics and battery life. Nice to know.

Nokia Internet Pulse Twitter tracker goes live

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 06:30 AM PDT

Nokia Internet Pulse is a curious new website from the brainboxes at Nokia’s research centre in California. It’s a realtime social network tracker that scans Twitter for buzz about a keyword, then gives you a visual guide to whether the talk is good or bad.

The Nokia Internet Pulse website was unveiled at a conference in Atlanta yesterday, and aims to let you find out whether all the talk on the web about any subject is positive or not, quickly and easily. The site will eventually let you type in any keyword, and see a visual guide spread out over time, breaking down what’s been said about it over the course of a day, and with what other major keywords.

But where Nokia Internet Pulse differs from other Twitter search engines is that it flags up good tweets and bad tweets in blue and red respectively. It could eventually be used to gauge how people react to news and events, and you can bet that if Twitter’s Promoted Tweets take off companies will be keeping an eye on it to make theirs more appealing.

Nokia E5 super cheap E72 rival lands

Right now, Nokia Internet Pulse only works with Twitter and certain keywords (“Nokia”, “Google” and surprisingly, “Android” and “iPhone”) but it’s speedy and easy to use, and Nokia aims to include social networks more broadly, so we’d expect public Facebook updates to be included eventually.

It certainly needs a bit more work, as Nokia Internet Pulse seems to be flagging up tweets with the word “sure” in as positive, and “web” as negative, which seems somewhat illogical, but if you want to experiment, it’s free to try out right now.

iPad UK pre-order: Apple names its date

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 06:16 AM PDT

The iPad UK launch has been delayed, but Apple’s slipped us one morsel of info to cling to now that the tablet’s not landing in Blighty until the end of next month: a date for pricing announcements, and pre-orders. Whip out your calendar and read on.

Apple delayed the iPad UK and international launch today for a second time, declaring that the the iPad’s “runaway success” in the US means it won’t be able to ship enough orders for an international launch until the end of May. But Apple also gave word of when we can expect that much rumoured iPad UK price, as well as the day that pre-orders will commence on the Apple online store internationally: Monday 10 May. That should give you plenty of time to read up on our in-depth iPad UK review.

iPad UK price: prepare for the Apple tax

While an actual pricetag for the iPad UK model would have been more helpful, at least we know when to expect it now. And if the US launch is anything to go by, you can expect people to place dibs on the first batch before you can say “Steve Jobs wears a funny hat”. Expect a precise time for pre-orders closer to the date, and stay tuned for any more details on the iPad UK price and launch as it breaks.

Sam & Max: The Devil’s Playhouse gameplay video revealed

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 06:00 AM PDT

A Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse gameplay video has slipped onto the web before the arrival of the first of the five episodes tomorrow. The Penal Zone has already arrived on iPad but lands on Mac, PC and Playstation Network on Thursday. Take a gander at the Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse gameplay video to see whether you should grab it…

With a plot that seems to take in a giant space gorilla and Max, the mildly-sociopathic rabbit gaining psychic powers, Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse definitely looks like it'll be a giggle. The Penal Zone arrived in the first wave off iPad apps and costs £5.99 but from tomorrow you’ll be able to grab all five episodes for PS3, Mac or PC for $34.95 (£22.67).

The subsequent episodes of Sam & Max: The Devil's Playhouse – The Tomb of Sammun-Mak, They Stole Max's Brain, Beyond the Alley of the Dolls and The City That Dares Not Sleep – will be released once a month until July. If all the episodes on the iPad cost the same as The Penal Zone, you'll end up paying more the iPad version than on PC, Mac or PS3.

If you’re partial to classic point and click games but aren’t a fan of the Freelance Police, Monkey Island 2: Special Edition is just round the corner too.

iPad UK launch delayed!

Posted: 14 Apr 2010 05:51 AM PDT

The iPad UK launch has been postponed again, Apple announced today. Lucky US citizens may already be able to get their hands on the iPad Wi-Fi model, but if you didn’t import one, here in Blighty, we’re looking at a much longer wait. Read on for the details.

Apple has just issued a statement to press announcing that the iPad UK and international launch will be delayed due to “surprisingly strong US demand”. The iPad UK launch will now not take place until the end of May. The iPad went on sale on 3 April in the US, and was originally intended for release in the UK in March. This was pushed back to late April last month, and now Apple says that the US “runaway success” (More than 500,000 iPads were sold in the first week) is the cause of this second delay.

An iPad UK price is still MIA, but Apple has also announced that the iPad UK and international pre-orders will begging on Monday 10 May. We’ll update with any more news as it breaks.
