Phones4U UK stocking the Nexus One on May 7th?

Posted: 06 May 2010 10:17 AM PDT

This is quite odd, Google has long since said the Nexus One will only be available online. But, According to a report featured on Mobile Magazine, Phones4U will carry Google's Nexus One both on their website and in their retail stores across the United Kingdom. If this is correct they will be first to have a physical device for demonstration purposes and for sale.

“We are extremely excited about Google’s introduction of such a state of the art device into the market, which will no doubt have a significant impact on the mobile space from here on out. We’re really proud to be one of the first mobile retailers to stock Google’s Nexus One and we anticipate a rush of customers to be the first to get their hands on the phone”

The tweet above from Phones4U just confirmed this. You be able to get the Nexus One for free with a 24-month contract for £35 per month, which includes 600 minutes, unlimited text messaging, 1GB of data. With the exception of the low data cap, this is an awesome deal. Tomorrow could be a big day for the nexus One in UK.

Google Goggles updated now features language translation

Posted: 06 May 2010 10:02 AM PDT

The best part about this update is it's available for 1.6 and up phones. I know there are a few of you still stuck on 1.5 but this does reach more users then some of the newer apps that are only compatible with 2.0 and up devices. With that being said, it's good to see that Google is making a concerned effort to make their Android apps as good as possible. They are even keeping their mobile sites updated for Android devices.

Goggles have been one of the most popular and fun apps available for Android since it were released. It's now gotten a whole lot better. Goggles can read English, French, Italian, German and Spanish and can translate too many more languages. This update also improves barcode recognition, it now recognizes more products and logos, has an improved user interface and it can now use photos in your gallery to perform a visual search.

SlingPlayer now in private beta for Android

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:50 AM PDT

Ever since March, there has been a Sling Player in the works for Android. Since first hearing about at this year's GDGT, we've heard nothing new in terms of progress of this. The Android Sling Player is rumored to launch this summer so it's about time we got some new information on this. It reportedly just moved into a private beta testing stage.

Sling Player will allow sharing various things over your home network including live television. You will even have the ability to share things over your data connection. Guess it's not so much a secret now is it? They might as well allow all of us to bet test it.

Rumored email taken from Phandroid:

” Hi ,

The wait is finally over! A new private beta is available for the SlingPlayer Mobile for Android. Since your beta profile is a good match for testing, you have the opportunity to join the new beta program.

Please note this is a special invitation so do not share this email or the below URL with anyone else. Also, do not mention you received an invitation, that the beta is starting, or anything that's related. Due to the overwhelming demand for this program, we'd like to keep things as quiet as possible. Just think of it as a secret club! ;)

Dell Aero Gains FCC Approval

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:35 AM PDT

Guess it won't be long now, this device was promised for a Q2 release and the end of that quarter is fast approaching. The Dell Aero has just received approval from the FCC. This device is expected to land on AT&T in June. This device will keep the name Aero at launch, often times the name is changed when a device is released.

This will be an Android 1.5 device with a custom UI and most likely a bunch of AT&T bloatware. It will also have a 624 MHz Marvell processor, a 3.5-inch touch screen, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g and Bluetooth. This is a low-end Android phone and should be priced around $199 (unconfirmed), hopefully lower.

Dual Boot Android to Android?

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:25 AM PDT

You ever want to try out a new ROM but didn't want to go through the hassle of having to set everything up again, perform a nandroid/bart/switchrom, or reapply your theme again? Now you don't have to, you can now boot up two different ROM's on the same device without them conflicting in any way with each other. Now you can, but currently it's only been tested on the original HTC Hero.

Kendon at the VillainROM forums has recently release some software that allows you to accomplish this. Currently it's only for the original but I'm sure the dev community or Kendon himself will be able to modify this to work with any Android device that has root. But for now all you original Hero owners now have something nice a shiny to play with.

i have managed to have two different android flashes on the hero, tested using VillainROM5.5.0 and SlideVillain1.1.0. it is designed to work with every rom you throw at it. it uses the /system partition for the first rom, the /data partition for the second rom, and two ext partitions for the userdata of each rom. apps2sd support is completely removed during the process, it is obvious that two roms using the same apps2sd partition would create a mess. the process is completely reversible (except for the wiping, so backup!). i have written a bash script that does the necessary steps for you, which are:

- modify the boot.imgs of the roms
- partition your sdcard
- flash the roms
- move the second rom to the /data partition
- move the two roms’ userdata to the sdcard’s ext partitions

Short Video Of The myTouch 3G Slide

Posted: 06 May 2010 05:51 AM PDT

A new video has surfaced with the myTouch 3G Slide in action. This video doesn't really get deep into to the phone functions but it does show a few key components of the device. Notice how smooth it is while swiping on the home screen, the widget response was smooth and fast as well. If you're skeptical of purchasing this because of the 600MHZ CPU, you have nothing to worry about.

Personally, I love Sense UI, nothing comes close to its beauty. The widgets are top notch and often imitated. Flash integration is a nice feature as well. Expresso, which is the custom Sense UI for the MT3G Slide, is a new take on Sense UI. HTC has taken a queue from the developer community and slapped a nice theme on this version. It is really visually appealing and I think this phone will be one of the top sellers for T-Mobile.

Sprint HTC EVO 4G up for preorder later this month

Posted: 06 May 2010 04:18 AM PDT

It seems the wait for the Sprint HTC EVO 4G may soon be over, with The Shack’s employee website excitedly telling staff that the pre-orders for the WiMAX-packing smartphone will begin later this month.  The leaked screenshot confirms that the EVO 4G is “coming soon”, but fails to mention pricing or service plans for the much-anticipated handset.

The HTC EVO 4G has the same 4.3-inch WVGA display as the HTC HD2, but pairs it with Android 2.1 together with HTC Sense, an 8-megapixel camera and Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon processor.  There’s also HDMI connectivity, EVDO Rev.A support for when you’re not in a WiMAX service area, and the ability to turn the handset into a MiFi-style portable hotspot.

Going by previous leaks, the EVO 4G is tipped to land at just $199.99.  For more details, check out our hands-on report from the EVO 4G launch.

Android 2.1 update for Motorola MILESTONE is out

Posted: 06 May 2010 02:58 AM PDT

Motorola have finally pushed out the Android 2.1 firmware update for the Motorola MILESTONE, with the software being available today for direct download or, the company promise, as an OTA update in the next few days.  Android 2.1 brings with it the potential for up to 9 homescreen panes, Live Wallpapers, speech-to-text and various bug and security fixes.

It’s been a few months since Motorola’s last update for the MILESTONE, which saw the handset blessed with Android 2.0.1.  In the meantime, Motorola’s other Android devices – those with MOTOBLUR – have languished with Android 1.6.

You can download Android 2.1 for the MILESTONE here, though you’ll need a PC to install it to your phone.  More details in the release notes [PDF link]; let us know how you get on!

Black HTC Desire comes to Orange UK, sells out

Posted: 05 May 2010 02:11 PM PDT

This has been a trend for HTC as of late. They have sold out of everything from Vodafone's Nexus One, the HD2 and a few times with the desire. What's going on with HTC, maybe they didn't think their phones would be this popular? Orange has recently made the black HTC desire and it sold out almost as soon as it was available.

The Desire remains one of the most wanted Android handsets. This new black design makes it look even better, it was already a good looking device. You can even get this device for free with the right plan. There's currently no word on when there will be more available, let's just hope the wait for the next batch isn't that long.

South Korea is getting a lot of top notch Android devices from many different manufacturers. Samsung has just released their Android powered Galaxy A on SK Telecom today. The Galaxy A has a 720MHz CPU, 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED PLUS screen, 5MP camera, 8GB internal memory, video calling, T-DMB, Bluetooth 2.1, DivX support, Wi-Fi, 3.5mm headphone jack and 1500mAh battery. SlashGear Reviews Spring Design Alex

Posted: 05 May 2010 11:51 AM PDT

The Spring Design Alex looks to take on the big names in the eReader world with their latest Android powered eBook. The guys over at Slashgear put together a nice in-depth review of this device. The Alex can be yours for a price tag of $399. This is a nice device but I'm not sure if this is worth the aforementioned price even with its specs and their partnership with Borders.

The Alex has dual screens, a 6-inch 600 x 800 E Ink display and a 3.5-inch 320 x 480 capacitive touch screen with a color LCD panel. There's also a miniUSB, Wi-Fi b/g and a microSD card slot, and there's a 2.5mm headphone socket. Android 1.5 is running on a 624MHz processor with 256MB of memory. You get a 2 GB microSD with the eReader to store all your books on (if they can fit). It also has stereo speakers, a built-in microphone and a 1,530mAh battery.

This is a great choice if you are in the market for an Android eBook. But the odd 2.5mm head jack, lack of 3G and high price tag might make it a hard buy. There are other eReaders that are cheaper and has just as many features as this one. Head over to Slashgear for the full review, photos and a video of this device in action.

Mobile Search for Android Gets Updated

Posted: 05 May 2010 11:30 AM PDT

Google's mobile search page for Android just got a little closer to the desktop client. There is now a button to the left of the search results that allows quickly refine search results based on time frame or product type. The computer based search page has also been revamped.

You can also narrow your search by date and the new menu can be used to add images to the search. These new feature should help you get to the things that's most relevant to your search. These changes may not work as well on browsers other than the native one. Check out the new search page and see how you like it.
