Google’s Phone Store Won’t Sell Phones Anymore

Posted: 14 May 2010 10:48 AM PDT

Well that didn't take long. Google's first dance as a phone store will soon come to an end. They announced today that the Nexus One will now be sold in retail stores instead of online. Many people did not like this move by Google and it's been proven now that is was not a good choice.

Soon you will be able to walk into your local cell phone shop and get some hands on time with the Nexus One. Google will not close their online phone site, it will be transformed into a place that will display Android devices that are available. It will essentially be a place where you can go to window shop.

The low sales numbers of the Nexus One is surely the deciding factor for this move. Verizon and Sprint has bailed on the Nexus due to its slow sales. I know there are more than a few of you who thought this was a bad idea to begin with. Do you think this move will help sales of the Nexus One or is it too little too late for Google.

Dell Streak Heading to O2 Telefonica First; AT&T Later This Summer

Posted: 13 May 2010 08:55 PM PDT

Remember when SlashGear stipulated that, based on a mysterious Dell pres release, the Dell Streak (previously known as the Mini 5) could be heading to O2 Telefonica soon? Well, looks like they were right. Thanks to Dell’s CEO, we’ve now got confirmation that the mini-tablet is very near official release, and we know where it’s going, too.

So, are you still interested in a tablet measuring in at 5-inches? After all, there’s a 4.3-inch device hitting shelves soon, too. If you are, then hopefully you’ll find yourself over the pond starting next month, so you can grab a contract with O2 Telefonica. Either that, or you can wait until “later this summer with our pretty good partner here in the United States, AT&T.” So, patience pays off in the end, right?

Samsung Acclaim for US Cellular

Posted: 13 May 2010 05:49 PM PDT

Last week US Cellular announced the not only will they be carrying the HTC Desire but will offer a Samsung Android as well. At the time there was no picture of the device only a few specs. These specs included a full QWERTY keyboard, Android 2.1 and a 3.2-inch HGVA screen. Well, this phone looks like it has most of those requirements.

This picture was leaked to Engadget, since then there have been many different sites that claim to have confirmation that this is indeed the real thing. As much as I would like to give it that label, I can't just yet. It does appear to be the real thing but we've seen some wonderful Photoshop jobs done in the past.

If this is the Acclaim it's a sleek and sexy device. The front of the phone looks futuristic, it has a combination of soft and hard keys and appears to be sporting an optical tracpad. The keyboard doesn't look all that great though but it will get the job done. All we need now is a release date, price and confirmation for US Cellular that this is the Acclaim.

UMA Android Phone In The Works?

Posted: 13 May 2010 04:43 PM PDT

Since the release of the G1, Android owners sat by patiently waiting for an Android device with UMA capabilities. That wait may come to an end soon. BGR is reporting that T-Mobile is currently test UMA to be used in upcoming Android handsets.

T-Mobile will be testing this UMA Android device Q3 this year. That's right around the corner, Q2 is coming to a swift end. This is welcome news for all of us T-Mobile customers, I thought UMA was getting phased out, it's nice to see they haven't given up on the service.

For those of you that don't know, UMA is service by T-Mobile that essentially turns your house into a mobile hotspot. In addition to that, it allows certain phones to effortless switch between Wi-Fi and regular mobile signal. While your phone is connected to the hotspot no matter how weak your signal is your area your phone will have excellent service. And the best thing about UMA is, while you're connected you can make as many calls as you want without using a single minute on your plan. An Android phone with this feature would be a great addition.

Samsung Moment Gets 2.1 Officially From Sprint

Posted: 13 May 2010 02:55 PM PDT

Seems like this is the week for Android 2.1, doesn’t it? Sure enough, after Verizon Wireless started letting out the Android 2.1 update for the Droid ERIS, here we are with another wireless carrier offering it up for another device. This time around it’s Sprint, and the Samsung Moment is the handset getting all the attention.

Unlike Verizon, though, Sprint is offering up the download courtesy of their Moment support page. This means that it’s going to completely wipe your device once you get it downloaded, so be sure to back-up everything that you want to keep. There’s instructions you can find right here, courtesy of a PDF file. It’s not an OTA update, meaning you won’t be told there’s a download waiting for you, so if you want 2.1 and you’ve got a Moment, just head on over to the site and start your download. And, as soon as you do, let us know what you think of it, okay?

HTC Triumph Heads to TELUS This Summer

Posted: 13 May 2010 01:59 PM PDT

When the HTC Triumph came into our radar the first time, it was because it had appeared in an internal TELUS inventory screen. Well, now it’s getting a little bit more interesting, as a tipster has sent Mobile Syrup the first screen shot of the device. And, as some had suggested, the Triumph is indeed a rebranded version of HTC’s Desire.

The HTC Triumph will feature Android 2.1, HTC’s Sense User Interface (UI), 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, and the 1GHz Snapdragon processor under the hood. It’s supposedly coming out at some point between July and August, with the rumors leaning the release some time more in July, rather than August. It features WiFi, GPS, and a 5MP camera on the back that comes with auto-focus and flash.

Yes, it’s the HTC Desire, but that’s not a bad thing at all. And it’s a very strong addition to TELUS’ Android line-up, with the HTC Hero, Motorola Milestone and Backflip, waiting patiently to be put out to pasture with the thoroughbred’s release. There’s no price point quite yet, but if it’s launching in July, it won’t be long at all.

Google’s Froyo Sculpture Covered in Saran Wrap in Front of HQ [Update: Here it is!]

Posted: 13 May 2010 01:26 PM PDT

In classic Google tradition, it seems that the large, plastic sculpture representing the next iteration of Google’s mobile Operating System (OS), Android, is now sitting out front of the Mountain View headquarters. But, unfortunately, it’s still wrapped up, and despite some determination from another journalist, it’s going to be kept that way for at least a little while longer.

TechCrunch apparently caught wind that Google was putting up the Froyo sculpture last night, and so they sent out of one of their intrepid writers to find out what was going on out there. When she got there, she found that the frozen yogurt sculpture was still hidden under some pretty heavy duty saran wrap. When she tried to remove it, to get a better shot, some Google employees threatened to call security on her. So, obviously she took the best shots she could.

There’s still a lot to be desired here, but at least we know it’s there. And, it’s good to see Google still having fun with their statues. We’re just as excited to see what the sculpture looks like, as we are to finally get Froyo on our devices. In the mean time, though, what’s your favorite sculpture up right now?

Verizon LG Ally hands-on

Posted: 13 May 2010 11:44 AM PDT

The choice of Android handsets continues to grow, and while we all love high-end superphones like the Google Nexus One, Sprint HTC EVO 4G and Verizon Droid Incredible, we’re also pleased to see more affordable models broadening the range.  Fresh to the Android Community test bench today is the Verizon LG Ally, hitting preorder status starting today, May 13th and set to go on sale May 20th for $99.99 with a new agreement.

That seems a pretty darn reasonable price for a hardware QWERTY phone, and while the Ally’s specs – a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera and Android 2.1 – may not exactly topple any giants, it’s not off to a terrible start.  As for the hardware itself, the glass touchscreen feels reasonably responsive and the keyboard has some decent tactile feel; we’re not entirely convinced by the key layout, however, and will have to see if we can get used to it.

As for LG’s UI changes, they’re minimal in comparison to something like MOTOBLUR or HTC Sense.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing – we’ve seen that unmodified Android phones usually get OS updates quicker than their customized counterparts – but it does make for a less gripping out-of-the-box experience.

We’ll be putting the LG Ally through its paces over the next few days in preparation for the full Android Community review, so until then enjoy the hands-on gallery below, and let us know any questions you might have! Check back in a couple of days for our full review of the LG Ally for Verizon.
