Motorola Droid Will Be Updated To Android 2.2

Our friends over at SlashGear have recently received confirmation from Motorola that the Droid will be receiving the update to Android 2.2. Although, their reply doesn't lead us to believe that it will hit the device anytime soon. It is good to hear that there will be other devices other than HTC's 2010 lineup that will receive Android 2.2.

There was not mention of MotoBlur devices in the reply. Since we heard about 2.2, there have been questions about which devices will receive them and when. The Droid was almost a lock to get this update since it is a stock Android device and it was the first handset to join the Nexus one in the world of 2.1.

"We're excited to see Google's news of the next version of the Android operating system and look forward to integrating it on our Android-based devices as it's made available to the open source community."

While I can't comment on specifics, we do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future."

The reply from Motorola is quite vague, it clearly states that it will get it at some point. It seems as though Motorola doesn't even have 2.2 loaded on test Droid's yet. Judging from the way they handled the 2.1 upgrade, it may be awhile until we have this update on our Droid's. The wait is now on for Froyo to make its rounds to our current Android phones, Nexus one owners are surely going to have first crack at 2.2. There have been a few reports that the roll out of Froyo has already starting to show up on a few select devices.

Froyo Is Being Pushed TO The Nexus One Now

Early this morning a writer from TechCrunch made a claim that before he went to bed last night, he put his phone on the charger. Before he put it down he noticed that he had a notification for an update. So he installed the update and what do you know, he had 2.2. Most of us around the web did not think this was real, no one else had it and screen shots didn't look to good. But, people in various parts started to receive this update and it's pretty much confirmed. Froyo is being pushed out to the Nexus One right now.

Things like this is what makes the Ne us One a great device to have. Those of us with a Nexus will receive the update straight from Google. It could be 4 or more months before other devices receive this update and by then our beloved Nexus Ones will likely be on "Gingerbread".

We're all anxiously awaiting the arrival of the OTA to our own devices. People have been unrooting all morning in an effort to get a hold of this tasty treat. Engadget has also confirmed this OTA, they have it on their device right now. Looks like the guy from TechCrunch really is a very lucky guy, he's probably the first person in the world to get Android 2.2.
