Lovefilm eyes console movie streaming

Posted: 06 May 2010 09:07 AM PDT

Exclusive: Lovefilm may be rolling out on Sony and Samsung TVs, but the DVD rental service has been conspicuously absent on consoles so far, while Netflix happily streams blockbuster titles to the Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii in the US. That could change soon though: a top exec at the UK company says it’s “excited” about what the latest generation of consoles can do. So excited, it’s got a Nintendo Wii in the office. What ever for?

We asked Lovefilm’s chief marketing officer, Simon Morris, whether the company plans to offer movie streaming to subscribers on consoles as well as TVs and Blu-ray players, and while he couldn’t confirm anything, he said the Lovefilm team are “excited about the options that games platforms allow…we want to get on as many platforms as possible.”

Lovefilm TV movie streaming: next steps revealed

That’s promising enough on its own, but w’ve got more reason to suspect Lovefilm is serious about this. On a visit to the company’s HQ in west London today, we spotted a Wii in a demonstration room, badged up with the company’s logo on the side.

Morris wouldn’t confirm if the company had a Lovefilm channel running on it, but it’s a tantalising glimpse of what might be in the pipeline nonetheless. We’d love to see Lovefilm on the Wii: while the PS3 and Xbox 360 both offer well stocked rental services already, right now the only top notch video on demand Wii owners can access in the UK is BBC iPlayer.

We’ll be keeping close tabs on this for you, so stay tuned, and try not to act too surprised if Lovefilm makes an announcement sometime soon.

Lovefilm TV movie streaming: next steps revealed

Posted: 06 May 2010 08:48 AM PDT

Exclusive: Lovefilm, the online DVD rental service, has slowly but surely been ramping up its digital plans over the last few months, first serving up a new iPhone app, then revealing plans to allow for movie streaming over new Sony and Samsung TVs and Blu-ray players. We dropped by the company’s offices today to see what else it has in the pipeline, so read on for what it’s planning to add, and when.

Lovefilm’s movie streaming service has been available on PCs for sometime now, and landed on a new batch of Sony TVs back in March, but the service is now set to roll out “in the next few days” to the newly shipping Samsung Internet@TV screens and Blu-ray players, according to Lovefilm chief marketing officer Simon Morris.

We got a chance to test out a final version before it’s pushed out to customers, and came away impressed: there are two streams for image quality based on your broadband speed which the PC version of Watch Online lacks, 700kbps and 1.6Mbps, and extra options to rate and add films to your DVD rental list have been added to the homescreen since we last saw it in action two months ago. An option to check out film reviews will also be added in the near future.

If you’re a Lovefilm subscriber eyeing a new IPTV flatscreen, we’d certainly consider Samsung’s service over Sony’s. Although both offer the same picture quality and streams, Lovefilm’s been able to create a much more powerful, custom design for Samsung than for Sony: it allows you to search through all 65,000 titles, with the list being whittled down in realtime as you type on a surprisingly efficient on screen keyboard, rather than simply browse a highlighted few.

Read our Lovefilm iPhone app review now

That said, the Sony Bravia Lovefilm streaming service is also set to get an update, with the handy addition of trailers, so you can get a better glimpse of what a film is like than a synopsis alone: we saw it in action, and it worked as you’d expect, with next to no load time.

Looking further ahead, we confirmed that Lovefilm is planning on adding Pay Per View options available on PCs to its TV services as well, though it’s further down the pipeline. “We have plans to take our transactions across platforms, but not this year,” group digital officer Leslie Mackenzie told us.

On the mobile front, Morris confirmed that a second version of the Lovefilm iPhone app is also on the way, and should hit the app store within “weeks”. “Trailer functionality” will feature, he revealed, so you should be able to watch a clip of a film on the go before adding it to your rental list. We also asked Morris if Android or other apps were planned, and while he wasn’t specific, he said the company is “looking at all platforms”.

Finally, Morris also said Lovefilm was willing to stock 3D Blu-ray films, though nothing has been set in stone yet, and that it would “definitely flag [up the differences] to you” in the same way it highlights DVDs and Blu-rays currently on its site.

From what we saw, Lovefilm is making a lot of moves to catch up with US equivalent Netflix in online features and compatibility. Unfortunately, Morris wouldn’t comment on the company’s plans for HD online streaming, but we’d stake a tidy sum it’s on its To Do List too. Here’s hoping.

Halo: Reach beta – over one million players on day one

Posted: 06 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

The Halo: Reach beta only opened on Monday evening but it managed to pull in over one million players on its first day. Understandably Bungie is pretty happy with the number of Xbox Live users furiously fragging each other (OK, we know that sounds rude) in the Halo: Reach beta and has revealed some impressive stats…

According to Bungie, 1,170,112 players logged into the Halo: Reach beta in the first 24 hours. That legion of space marines managed to maim each other 157,972,986 times in the same period with over 14,205,611 games played.

Bungie totted up the time spent by all those players in the Halo: Reach beta and the total came to a slightly staggering 260,240 man hours. That's 29 years worth of time spent of multiplayer madness in Halo: Reach. Get the feeling there were a lot of Halo fans not getting enough sleep?

If you've got a Halo: ODST disc and haven't logged into the Halo: Reach beta yet, there's still time. It's running until May 19. And if you're not sure what all the fuss (and man hours) are about, check out the Halo: Reach multiplayer trailer.

General Election 2010 results: 5 ways to watch them

Posted: 06 May 2010 07:30 AM PDT

The General Election 2010 comes to an end tonight and after weeks of the politicians angling for your attention, it's the broadcasters turn to battle for your eyeballs. If you're planning to plunge headfirst into tonight's political punditry, here's 5 ways to watch the General Election 2010 results whether you're locked in your living room or heading out to a political party…

1 Watch in HD
Sky News HD starts broadcasting tonight from 6pm, so that's one place you can see politicians praying for political survival in seriously sharp detail. But if you got Freeview HD or Virgin Media, you'll also be able to watch hi-definition General Election results coverage on BBC HD and ITV 1 HD.

2 Feast on Freeview

As well as election coverage on BBC 1, ITV 1 and Channel 4 (where Charlie Brooker and comedy chums will be offering up Alternative General Election coverage), you can grab the general election results on Sky News and the BBC News Channel through standard Freeview. Freesat has all those channels too, except for Sky News.

3 Head online

Coverage will also be streamed online. You can watch Kay Burley et al streamed on the Sky News website. The Beeb's election coverage from BBC One and the BBC News Channel will be streaming live via iPlayer and the BBC News website. ITV will be in on the action too with live streaming through ITV.com. If you prefer to listen to the results, you can also tune into BBC Five Live and Radio 4 through iPlayer.

4 Use your Xbox
If you're an Xbox Live Gold account holder you get to Sky News for free through Xbox Live without needn't to spend any cash on Sky Player. We've recommended this twice now in both our Leaders Debate pieces and yet we still suspect most of you opted to play Splinter Cell: Conviction instead.

5 Get the results on the go
Planning to actually leave your house and live your life while the politicians battle it out and the votes are counted? You can take the General Election results programmes with you! The Sky News app will stream the live coverage over 3G or WiFi on your iPhone. There's also the Beebplayer app for tuning into the BBC coverage through 3G or Wi-Fi on your Android phone (you'll need to be running Android 1.5 or over to make it work) and iPhone TVCatchup will do the same on the iPhone (or even the iPad) without the need for an app.

iPad 3G UK: microSIM created with meat cleaver

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT

iPad 3G models aren't locked to a network. As we told you on Monday that means anyone who's nabbed an iPad 3G ahead of the iPad UK launch can theoretically create their own microSIM. Now someone has done just that and documented the whole process with a flurry of photos. All you need is an iPad 3G, a SIM card, some scissors and…a meat cleaver.

John Benson imported an iPad 3G 64GB model from the US but was stuck with the AT&T microSIM. He turned himself into a tech Tony Hart and armed with some cutting implements set about turning an ordinary Vodafone SIM into a slimmed down microSIM that would fit in his new iPad 3G.

Because the Vodafone SIM and the AT&T microSIM share the same underlying electronics, Benson was able to then slot his cut down SIM into his iPad 3G and start surfing the web.

We know we're getting iPad UK data deals from O2, Vodafone and Orange. But if you've already got an iPad 3G, taking a DIY approach like Benson will mean you don't have to wait until the official iPad UK launch date which is due to be announced on Monday.

The usual warnings apply. If you follow the link below and carve out your own microSIM using John Benson's method, you could end up breaking your iPad 3G or landing yourself with a big data bill if the SIM you use doesn't come with unlimited data.

Still, kudos to John Benson for going above and beyond to get the best from his tech. And while you await the arrival of the iPad UK, make sure you read our iPad UK review.

Blackberry 9670 Clamshell with Blackberry 6 OS spotted

Posted: 06 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

The Blackberry 9670 isn't the first Blackberry clamshell we've seen. There was the Blackberry Kickstart back in 2008 and the Blackberry Flip last year but this new flip phone seems to be packing the Blackberry 6 OS. Will this get Crackberry fans flipping out or end up folding?

While the new Blackberry Pearl 3G will come packing a standard phone keypad for the UK version but it seems the Blackberry 9670 isn't following the trend. It's packing a full QWERTY keyboard, a feature that hasn't found its way into any previous Blackberry clamshell.

Besides the full finger friendly keyboard, the Blackberry 9670 is rumoured to be rocking both a 480×360 resolution main screen and a smaller LCD on the outside of the phone. There's also a 5MP camera in the mix.

There's no news on when or if the Blackberry 9670 will hit the UK but the leaked pictures show it running the forthcoming Blackberry 6 OS which is due in Q3 2010. Do you like the idea of packing a clamshell Blackberry?

AdMob location-targeted mobile ads hit UK

Posted: 06 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT

AdMob, the mobile advertising firm nabbed by Google from underneath Apple's nose, has begun testing location-targeted mobile ads in the UK. If you're a lovelorn Londoner browsing the web from your iPhone or iPod Touch, expect to see the dating site ads soon.

AdMob is trialing the location-targeted mobile ads with dating site LoveStruck. It'll offer up the ads based on the location iPhone or iPod Touch users are browsing from. LovesStruck is available to users in London, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and Liverpool but it's currently after singles in the capital.

Brett Harding, MD of Lovestruck, explains its needs for the AdMob location-targeted mobile ads: "Our current strategy is to expand our London membership with mobile dating apps. AdMob's technology means we can be sure only users in London are viewing are ads.”

AdMob also serves ads to Android phones but lonely Google handset huggers won't be hit with the new location-targeted mobile ads just yet. You’ll just have to find some other way of looking for love.

Facebook tracks UK election votes

Posted: 06 May 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Facebook has added an "I've voted" button at the top of the News Feed for UK users over 18. By totting up the number of UK Facebook lovers clicking, it's showing in real-time how many social network fans have also made it to the polling station. Meanwhile over 500,000 people have taken their pick in a Facebook poll asking who should be the next PM. So who's got the Facebook vote locked down?

Facebook says its put the vote tracker at the top of UK users news feeds as "a convenient reminder to get to the polling station". At the time of writing, the Facebook vote tracker was well on the way to 500,000. The same system was used to follow voting in the 2008 US Presidential election.

Click the Facebook "I've voted" button and it'll give you the option to show that you've cast your vote on your profile and give you the option to head over to the UK Democracy Facebook page. There's a lively debate going on there with the usual online slanging match and an intriguing poll to find Facebook fans' pick for Prime Minister.

At the moment, Nick Clegg, who also won the Xbox Live election poll, is currently in the lead. David Cameron is in second with Gordon Brown coming a close third. The feelings of Facebook users mirror the polls pretty closely. If you do vote in the Facebook poll be aware, it’s not anonymous so your friends will be able to see who you’ve voted for.

General Election 2010: Nick Clegg wins Xbox Live poll

Posted: 06 May 2010 04:00 AM PDT

The General Election 2010 has come to the crunch today with voters headed to the polls but one election result has already been revealed. In a poll among Xbox Live users, Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats romped to victory. Were the Xbox Live avatars of the leaders more compelling than the real thing?

While you may have just made it to the polling station today, Xbox Live users got a head start voting on the result of General Election 2010. In a vote held between April 29 and May 4, they were asked to pick between four avatars representing Nick Clegg, David Cameron, Gordon Brown and the ever popular None Of The Above.

Nick Clegg picked up 30% of the votes to win the Xbox Live General Election 2010 poll with David Cameron coming in second with 21% and Gordon Brown trailing with 18% of the vote. But 31% of votes were cast by people who still didn't know who they wanted to vote for. We'll definitely have a hung parliament if Xbox Live users are anything to go on.

Do you think the Xbox Live survey is a good prediction of the General Election 2010 results? And which Xbox Live avatar would you pick to lead virtual Britain?
