Apple Adobe battle rolls on in new ad campaign

Posted: 13 May 2010 07:30 AM PDT

Apple and Adobe are still slugging it out over Flash support on the iPhone and iPad. Following the open letter from Steve Jobs lambasting Flash, Adobe has launched a new ad campaign proclaiming its love for Apple. But behind the fluffy sentiment it's still arguing that Jobs and co are wrong…

Since Apple banned iPhone apps built with third party products including Adobe CS5, the iPad Flash war has been heating up even more. Adobe has previously called the iPad Flash ban "bad for consumers" but in its new ad campaign it's gone for a softer approach.

Adobe ads have started popping up across the web declaring: "We [heart] Apple". They then flip over to says: "What we don't love is anyone taking away your freedom to choose what you create, how you create it, and what you experience on the web." See what it did there?

Click on the ad and you're taken to an Adobe statement that notes its support for Apple approved formats like  HTML5, CSS and H.264 as well as its own tech like Flash. You'll also find an open letter to Apple from Adobe founders, Chuck Geschke and John Warnock.

In their fight back to Steve Jobs' open letter, the pair say: "We believe that Apple…has taken a step that could undermine this next chapter of the web – the chapter in which mobile devices outnumber computers, any individual can be a publisher, and content is accessed anywhere and at any time." Wait a minute, we thought they said they loved Apple…

Adobe has got some support from Google which is baking Flash into Google Chrome but with this major web-wide ad campaign it's clear that the attacks from Apple are getting to it.

Who are you backing in the Apple Adobe spat? Is it time for Flash to disappear in a puff of smoke or is Apple wrong to keep it far away from the iPad?

Blackberry tablet rumoured: no 3G planned

Posted: 13 May 2010 07:00 AM PDT

A Blackberry tablet is apparently in the works at RIM but the first details don't sound that inspiring. Rather than packing 3G, the Blackberry tablet is apparently set to rely on Bluetooth and WiFi. Read on for all the slightly worrying whispers about the Blackberry tablet project…

Boy Genius Report claims a Blackberry tablet is definitely in the works. It says the device is an 8.9in tablet which would make it a little on the small side compared to the 9.7in iPad. Also, unlike Apple's slate, the Blackberry tablet reportedly won't have the option of 3G.

The report suggests RIM is planning on making the Blackberry Tablet (presumably running the Blackberry 6 OS) a companion device to pair with your Blackberry via Bluetooth or hook up to WiFi. It’ll apparently focus on e-books, email, web browsing and photos. That all sounds firmly in the space that Apple has taken up with the iPad and Google will be going for with Chrome OS and Android tablets.

The rumours suggest that the Blackberry tablet is slated for a December release but that RIM's engineers are trying to get it done sooner. With the Asus Eee Pad set for July, the HP Slate potentially turning to webOS and an avalanche of Android tablets coming, that sounds wise.

Employees within RIM are reportedly frustrated about the entire Blackberry tablet plan and don't think it's a goer. Do you think RIM is right to try and devise a Blackberry tablet or should it stick to building new phones like the Blackberry Pearl 3G?

iPad ad pays tribute to the Apple Newton

Posted: 13 May 2010 06:30 AM PDT

The iPad ad which hit the web last night struck lots of people as somehow familiar. Then they realised, the new iPad spot is a homage to an ad for one of the Apple tablet's ancestors – the Apple Newton. Click through to see the new iPad ad compared with the clip that seems to have inspired it…

The Apple Newton was Apple's first tablet, a PDA with handwriting recognition which still has plenty of hardcore fans but went down in history as one of Cupertino's biggest flops. The new iPad ad recalls the TV advertising for the Newton, remaking the "What is Newton?" campaign for the modern age as "What is iPad?"

In both the iPad ad and the Apple Newton spot, a gruff voiced man runs down the features of the product while ordinary folk fondle the tech. And just as Apple now calls the iPad "magical", the What Is Newton? ad declared it to be "magic".

We included the Newton in our Apple Tablet history before the iPad emerged and it seems that someone at Apple still has a soft spot for the iPad's ancestor. Perhaps the former Apple Newton chief who was rehired last year had something to do with it.

The original Apple Newton TV campaign featured two more spots so perhaps there are Who Is iPad and What is iPad ads on the way. The second one would be perfect to show off the iPad 3G's GPS skills.

Let us know what you think of the new iPad ad. Does jumping back to the Apple Newton campaign show a love of nostalgia or a lack of new ideas?

Alan Wake DLC dated and detailed

Posted: 13 May 2010 05:30 AM PDT

Alan Wake is out tomorrow and we've got more news on the free Alan Wake DLC which is due later this year. The developer Remedy has spilled more details on what the Alan Wake DLC will add to the tale and when we'll see it…

We already knew that the first batch of Alan Wake DLC would be free to anyone who picks up the game but we now know it'll arrive on July 28 and that it won't tell a brand new story.

Remedy's Oskari Hakkinen told CVG that the Alan Wake DLC will "give you a different perspective on the things that you've done in season one and then set you up for the possible things you're going to do in season two."

Alan Wake 2 is already written and Hakkinen confirmed that the first instalment of Alan Wake will offer up a satisfying ending: "Season one – just to be clear – is a full package and you'll unravel the mystery and reach all your goals."

All this talk of the Alan Wake DLC providing a "different perspective" reminds us the Heavy Rain DLC which puts you in the shoes of the Origami Killer.

As well as the Alan Wake DLC arriving in July, we're promised a second batch later in the year. Stay tuned for our Alan Wake review which is also out tomorrow.

HTC Smart unboxed: photos

Posted: 13 May 2010 05:23 AM PDT

The HTC Smart just turned up at our doorstep looking for a place to crash. We’ve been waiting to try out the tiny little touchscreen since Mobile World Congress back in February, so naturally we welcomed it in. Come and see the unboxing photos here, and tell us what you want to see in our HTC Smart review!

The HTC Smart’s an unusual move from HTC, better known for cranking out phenomenal Android and Windows Mobile phones. It’s running Brew OS, Qualcomm’s decidedly non-smartphone mobile platform (You might have seen something similar on an INQ phone), but the twist is it’s sporting the same HTC Sense skin as new HTC Android and Windows Mobile phones, so you can see what your friends are jabbering about on Facebook and Twitter from your address book.

We’ve yet to log into the social networking elements of the HTC Smart (Excuse us, we’re having a few teething SIM card data problems), but from our quick first play, we’re certainly taken with the build. The HCT Smart is a slim, glossy phone that’s vastly more attractive than the similarly sized HTC Tattoo. The screen is responsive (The onscreen keys are too small for our chubby digits, mind), though we’re a bit puzzled by the concept of the Back button also acting as a Menu button when on the homescreen.

We’ll be putting the HTC Smart through the grinder over the next few days, but in the meantime, have a look at it coming out of its carton in our unboxing photo gallery.

Got any burning questions you want answered in our HTC Smart review? Jot your desires down here and we’ll do our best to answer them for you.

Apple MobileMe Mail beta to battle Gmail

Posted: 13 May 2010 05:00 AM PDT

Apple has outed a new MobileMe Mail beta which adds big fistfuls of new features and looks geared to go gunning for Gmail. If you've got a MobileMe account, you can apply for a beta invite now. Read on for a rundown of what Apple's added in the MobileMe Mail beta…

With the MobileMe Mail beta, Apple has introduced new widescreen and compact views. The widescreen view is very reminiscent of the iPad mail app while the compact view hides your folders.

In a move to make MobileMe more appealing to use across your iPhone, iPad and Mac, Apple is introducing a new system that allows you to set rules in the MobileMe Mail beta which will be applied to all your devices.

There are other tweaks to the web interface in the MobileMe Mail beta with single click archiving and a formatting toolbar (both features which will be familiar to Gmail fans). Apple also says the MobileMe Mail beta will offer improved performance and increased SSL security.

While the tweaks Apple is making with the MobileMe Mail beta will please current users, we've still got our fingers crossed that those free MobileMe rumours are true.

If you're a MobileMe user and have signed up to the MobileMe Mail beta, let us know what you think when it arrives. If you're not, what does Apple need to add to MobileMe to tempt you to give it a whirl?

BT OnLive on demand gaming incoming

Posted: 13 May 2010 04:00 AM PDT

BT has bought a stake in OnLive, the on demand streaming games service, and will be bringing it the UK. OnLive streams games over the web straight to your Mac, PC or TV, handling the graphical grunt work back at its server farm. So when we can expect OnLive to go live in the UK?

OnLive doesn't launch in the US until June but the promise of delivering games over your broadband connection has obviously tempted BT. It's snaffled up a 2.6% shareholding in OnLive and confirmed that it'll be adding it to its BT Vision service later in the year.

The idea of OnLive is that remote server farms do most of the major graphics work meaning you should be able to play games like Crysis 2 on far less powerful hardware. We saw an OnLive video demo back in January and while it look pretty tasty, serious PC gamers were perturbed by lag.

BT plans to package the OnLive on demand game streaming with its BT Vision service but OnLive also confirmed that it will be available through other ISPs too. Unlike others service like Stream, OnLive won't need to download files before you can get gaming.

BT Retail CEO, Gavin Patterson says: "Customers will have access to a huge catalogue of games, available instantly on their TV or PC without expensive hardware."

There's also the prospect of online arriving on mobiles too. Steve Perlman, OnLive's CEO says games will be "playable instantly on almost any video capable device attached to the internet."

BT has yet to announce when it will launch OnLive support and we're also in the dark about pricing. OnLive is set to arrive in the US later this summer.

Google Android 2.2: USB tethering and WiFi hotspot skills revealed

Posted: 13 May 2010 03:30 AM PDT

Google Android 2.2 is due to arrive next week but some more of its secrets have just slipped out. As well as Flash support, Android 2.2 Froyo will come with USB tethering and the ability to turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot built-in. That sound you can hear is mobile network bosses grinding their teeth…

Techcrunch has spilled the beans ahead of the Google Android 2.2 launch. The OS update will have USB tethering baked right in to allow you to share your data connection with your laptop.

While there are already apps out there to activate WiFi tethering on Android handsets, the new USB tethering feature would effectively turn your phone into a 3G dongle.

But it's the news that Google Android 2.2 will let you turn your phone into a WiFi hotspot that's got us most excited. Putting the feature at the heart of the OS could mean there'll no longer be any need to pack a mobile hotspot gizmo like the MiFi.

With USB tethering and WiFi hotspot smarts, Google Android 2.2 could suddenly give phones like the Nexus One and the HTC Desire an extra spark. And Apple will need to think hard about how iPhone 4.0 deals with data.

Are you gagging to get Android 2.2 on your phone? What other features are you hoping Google will introduce?

iPad UK preorders: shipping date changed

Posted: 13 May 2010 03:00 AM PDT

iPad UK preorders only opened on Monday but it seems Apple has already shifted a significant number of the tantalising tablet. The shipping date for iPad UK preorders has now changed so if you're not planning to head down to the Apple Store in person, you'll have a slightly longer wait…

Apple hasn't revealed how many tablets it put aside for iPad UK preorders but it seems it's all allocated the lot. Up until today, iPad UK preorders had a predicted shipping date of May 28, the day the iPad will hit the Apple Store. Now new iPad UK preorders won't arrive until June 7.

The change in the iPad UK shipping date suggests that yesterday's iPad survey claiming it won't go mainstream in Britain may well be wide of the mark.

Shifting all the units put aside for iPad UK preorders could mean we're set to see a repeat of the stellar US iPad sales which outstripped the iPhone.

Did you get your iPad preorder in before the shipping date changed? If you're still pondering whether it's worth rushing down to the Apple Store with your credit card in hand, check out our iPad UK review.
