Rock Band 3 hyped as MTV Games mocks Guitar Hero

Posted: 20 May 2010 08:00 AM PDT

Rock Band 3 will be unveiled at E3 and before it does, MTV Games has bashed Activision for pumping out so many titles in the rival Guitar Hero franchise. Is it right to claim that Guitar Hero has lost its rhythm while Rock Band has stayed in tune? Read on for the latest installment in the Rock Band vs Guitar Hero battle of the fake plastic bands.

In the gap between Rock Band 2 and Rock Band 3, we've seen Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Band Hero and DJ Hero. MTV Games has noticed that flurry of releases and decided to put the boot in.

MTV Games head honcho, Scott Guthrie, says: "At E3, you'll see that Harmonix has spent two years on an engine upgrade and creating the next evolution of Rock Band. Unlike the other guy we haven't been bringing a new game out every year…"

But Guthrie does remember to mention that Rock Band has hardly been quiet. Harmonix put out a little game called The Beatles: Rock Band and we only just got a first look at Green Day: Rock Band.

Is MTV Games right to claim that Rock Band has kept itself purer than Guitar Hero? And will you go out and grab Guitar Hero 6 or Rock Band 3? We think our living room may have too many plastic instruments in it already…

BBC Radio live streaming hits mobiles but not the iPhone

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:30 AM PDT

BBC Radio live streaming to your mobile has just got easier. The BBC has changed its policies to make it simpler to stream its stations on almost any phone. In fact, the iPhone seems to be pretty much the only one left out…

BBC Radio live streaming wasn't officially available on mobiles previously. The BBC was worried that listeners would gobble up too much data and be left with a massive bill.  Now most phones come packing Wi-Fi and generous data plans it's not so bothered.

Before you could hunt down the BBC Radio live streams or access them through unofficial iPhone, Symbian, Android and Windows Mobile apps. But now the BBC is putting a simple link to each station's stream on its mobile site.

Finding the sites is simple. It's just bbc.co.uk followed by the name of the station you're after. So if you're one of the legion hoping to save 6Music, you just need to head to bbc.co.uk/6music. Do that from your phone and you'll be bounced over to the mobile version where a link to the live stream sits near the top of the page.

BBC Radio boffins reckon the live streaming system will be able to recognise what kind of device you're packing. But iPhone and iPod Touch users are out of luck when it comes to the official live streams though catch up services through iPlayer do. If you're packing a work Blackberry you could struggle too as some firms switch off streaming.

While iPhone and iPod Touch users can't make use of the official BBC radio live streams through the mobile sites at the moment, the BBC says it's working on it. If that really irks you, you could always try unofficial apps like FStream and OOMobile which will get Beeb streams going on your iPhone.

iPad and iPod Touch camera teased in iPhone OS 4.0 beta

Posted: 20 May 2010 07:00 AM PDT

An iPad camera was top of a lot of people's wishlists before Steve Jobs unveiled the Apple tablet. Now the latest iPhone OS 4.0 beta has revived hopes of an iPad camera and stoked up speculation about the iPod Touch with camera that popped up again yesterday. Read on for a reading of the tech runes…

Buried in the code of the latest iPhone OS 4.0 beta, there's a reference to an iPhone with a camera sporting an LED Flash. That's not surprising as the first iPhone 4.0 leak was show packing just that. What is intriguing are later references to iPad and iPod Touch camera settings.

A warning message reads: "The iPad needs to cool down before you can use the flash." That could suggest that the camera with LED Flash that's headed for the iPhone 4.0 could also be set for the next-generation iPad. But then again it could simply be some sloppily copied code.

More solidly, the iPhone OS 4.0 beta later shows an iPod Touch as one of the possible sources of snaps in the OS. We'd be willing to put a slice of our meagre wages on an iPod Touch with camera coming our way soon but we'll be waiting a good while longer for a camera packing iPad.

Let us know: Do you think Apple should put a camera into the iPod Touch? And would an iPad camera seriously sweeten the deal for you?

Seesaw adds rental service with MTV, Comedy Central and BBC shows

Posted: 20 May 2010 06:00 AM PDT

Seesaw, the on-demand video service formerly known as Project Kangaroo, has launched a new rental service. So as well as nabbing shows from BBC, ITV and Five for free, you can now rent them and others from MTV and Comedy Central. So how much will an episode of South Park set you back on Seesaw?

Seesaw launched back in February offering a free TV catchup service as well as older shows from the BBC and Channel 4 archives including some cult classics like Spaced.

The new Seesaw rental service is on top of the current free streaming option. You can rent single programmes for up to 30 days with 48 hours of viewing once you start to watch the show or rent a whole series. Individual episodes will set you back between 99p and £1.19 with series varying from as low as £3.99 to up to £17.99.

Though Seesaw didn't mention it in its release, we've also spotted content from other networks including recent series of Lost up for grabs. Seesaw says deals with Hollywood movie studios are also in the works.

With iTunes TV episodes going for £1.19 to keep we can't help but think Seesaw's rental only model is a little bit steep. Arqiva, the firm behind Seesaw, is also one of the partners in Project Canvas, the on demand TV standard that finally got approval yesterday.

Have you played with Seesaw? Let us know what you think and whether you’re tempted by its new rental plan.

iPad app store live in UK: iBooks store MIA

Posted: 20 May 2010 03:30 AM PDT

The iPad app store is now live in the UK. We managed to browse Apple's catalogue of iPad delights this morning on the very tablet featured in our iPad UK review. But with just over a week until the iPad UK launch, the shelves of the iBooks Store are currently empty…

If you've already grabbed your iPad or have got your iPad UK preorder in, it's great news that Apple has finally unshuttered the UK branch of the iPad app store.

As you can see from the gallery above, App for Cooks are getting the first big push in the UK iPad app store with the World Cup covered by a plug for The Official England app.

Hop over to the iBooks Store on your iPad though and you'll find that things are distinctly quieter. When we took a look earlier, the virtual shelves were entirely bare. Still with a week to go, that's not surprising.

Search for the iBooks app in the iPad App Store and you'll be greeted with two links – one marked Learn More, the other Get iBooks. But sadly they're not working at the moment.

Apple has said iBooks will be available in time for the iPad UK launch, so expect the ebooks to start appearing soon and the rest of the iPad app store to fill up even more.

Let us know what you've spotted in the UK iPad App Store. Are there any new additions you particularly like the look of?

Sennheiser founder dies aged 98: the passing of an audio pioneer

Posted: 20 May 2010 03:00 AM PDT

Sennheiser founder and audio pioneer, Prof. Dr Fritz Sennheiser died on Monday, just days after his 98th birthday. The German inventor was instrumental in many ground breaking developments in audio including creating the first shotgun microphones and open headphones.

Sennheiser's early childhood passion for electronics led him to pursue electrical engineering. After serving as a radio operator and an academic during the war he began the path of invention which led to Sennheiser becoming the company it is today, bringing in over €385m in revenue in 2008 and 2,100 employees.

Though Sennheiser retired from the firm in 1982, the results of his work are still present in recent products such as the Sennheiser RS160 wireless headphones. His son, Jörg Sennheiser, took over the firm and still heads it up today. Follow the next link for a full and fascinating biography of Sennheiser.

Sennheiser products are used by millions of consumers and professionals around the world so rather than suggesting a moment of silence, pop in your headphones and turn up your music in honour of a true technological pionneer. Prof. Dr. Friz Sennheiser we salute you.
