DROID X rooted; next stop that tricky bootloader

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 06:45 AM PDT

Could it really be this simple?  According to Droid X Forums the new Verizon DROID X has already been rooted, and it’s a mighty simple process from the look of it.  Hot on the heals of recovery mode for the smartphone being accessed come root privileges.

Of course, just having root access is only one part of the process: right now the bootloader is still locked down tight, and Motorola’s use of eFuse tech means that third-party ROMs are still a no-go area right now.  What you should be able to do, though, is get rid of any preloaded bloatware you’re not using, and all the other little hacks that root permits.  Now, anyone brave enough to give it a try?

Step 1: Set up ADB
Step 2: Push exploid to /sqlite_stmt_journals “adb push exploid /sqlite_stmt_journals”
Step 3: type “adb shell”
Step 4: type “cd sqlite_stmt_journals”
Step 5: type “chmod 755 exploid”
Step 6: type “./exploid” and follow directions on screen
Step 7: type “rootshell”
Step 8: type in password “secretlol”
Step 9: your in root!
Step 10: mount your sdcard to pc and put Superuser.apk and su in the sdcard
Step 11: unmount sdcard
Step 12: in adb (make sure your still in root with the # sign) type in:
- cp /sdcard/Superuser.apk /system/app/Superuser.apk
- cp /sdcard/su /system/bin/su
- chmod 4755 /system/bin/su

Dell confirm unlocked Streak in “late July”

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 03:09 AM PDT

While rumors of a mid-July launch on AT&T for the Dell Streak seem to have amounted to nothing, Dell themselves are pushing ahead with sales of the unlocked Android tablet.  Having put it up for pre-sale earlier this week, Dell has now confirmed that the Streak is set to arrive sometime later this month.

That doesn’t leave a huge window for them to push the Streak out the door; it’s July 22nd today, so they’ve basically got just over a week left.  No word on pricing at this stage, but at least we know the specs: 5-inch WVGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS, together with a customized Android 1.6 OS and the promise of Android 2.1 due later in the year.

AT&T Android Owners Can Now Side-Load Apps

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 03:05 AM PDT

Bad news seems to be everywhere right now, whether it’s about Milestone perhaps not getting Froyo and now. If you are big fan of the Aria from AT&T then you probably know that the carrier has crippled the phone so that you cannot download applications from third parties; simply put, from nowhere other than the Android Market. You can see in the picture below that the option is not even present, since AT&T has taken it out completely.

However, here comes the good news. The guys from Android Central have developed a little program for Windows called the “Sideload Wonder Machine”, this app will allow you to install any .apk file you wish for to your Aria without rooting your phone. The app is available for download now.

Motorola Milestone’s Android 2.2 Future Still Undecided

Posted: 22 Jul 2010 03:00 AM PDT

Bad news for Motorola Milestone users. Apparently, Motorola are still undecided on whether or not they should bring Android 2.2 (Froyo) to the Motorola Milestone. The marketing director of the Motorola European region, James King, states that Motorola has yet to make final decision on whether they will be offering Froyo to their users.

James King himself also made quite a speech about this matter. He said that over the past few days the decision about Froyo to Milestone has been under major discussion, with his team collecting key pieces of information and views from Motorola forum community over the last month. James himself claimed that he has pushed Motorola to make a decision as soon as possible. However, this doesn’t mean that Froyo is never going to come, just that it could be further off in the future than we expected it to be.

Motorola Droid X: How to Boot Into Recovery

Posted: 21 Jul 2010 12:51 PM PDT

Right now, there’s no telling how long it will be if the hacking community (as good as you are, you amazing folks) gets into the innards of our beloved Droid X, or if they will at all, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to boot into recovery anyway, right? Of course not! So, consider this your Public Service Announcement for today. And for the record, doing the steps below won’t brick your phone, so don’t freak out.

How to do it

1. Turn your phone off.
2. Hold down “Home” and press the “Power” button there at the top. Hold them until the Motorola logo appears
3. Release the “Power” button, but continue to hold the “Home” button until you see an exclamation mark (!)
4. Release the “Home” button and press the “Search” key once (and only once!)
5. And BAM! you’ve just booted yourself into recovery

Like we said, there’s no real reason for this right now. And by that, we mean for the general public. But hey, it can get us closer to our dreams of being able to have all the fun we want with our beastly devices, thanks to root access. So . . . How about it?
