| DROID X latest to get Apple’s antenna testing Posted: 24 Jul 2010 10:56 AM PDT Apple has already used the HTC Droid Eris as an example for why the iPhone 4 antenna issue is an industry-wide problem rather than something they alone face, and now they’ve spread their net to include one of the must-have Android smartphones of the moment, the Motorola DROID X. Fresh to the company’s antenna testing page is Verizon’s latest Android handset, showing how a tight grip around the lower portion of the rear of the DROID X is enough to knock if from three bars to zero.
“In weak signal areas,” Apple concludes, “this grip may negatively affect signal strength.” Of course, they don’t actually say that will result in dropped calls, but that’s certainly the implication. We’ve not had any reception issues holding our DROID X review unit in a regular way, so we’d be interested to hear if those Android Community readers who have been able to buy the coveted smartphone are experiencing the same problems that Apple are highlighting. Let us know in the comments! [via Engadget - thanks James!] ) |
| Motorola Cliq Gets Android 2.1 Earlier Than Planned Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:52 PM PDT Apparently, the Motorola Cliq has received Android 2.1. No, not officially (we wish), but as a leaked ROM. According to an anonymous source, there’s a leaked ROM that appears to be an official T-Mobile 2.1 variant. Unfortunately, there’s still no word on when the final OTA will be ready to go, but we’re still leaning towards August.
EngadgetMobile have update their Cliq, and from their initial time with the update, the outcome is pretty good. The result is unquestionably fast and promising. If this is any indicator of how it’s going to stay, then consider us pretty excited for the future of the Cliq. [via AndroidGuys] ) |
| Andy vs. Apple T-Shirt: Another Way To Mock Apple Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:46 PM PDT Our green robot mascot is more popular than ever. Nothing wrong with that at all. And, there’s definitely nothing wrong with our beloved Android being represented in the same light as Godzilla, and taking the war to Apple. That’s exactly what we’re getting with this new Andy vs… shirt. And, this one’s a real winner.
You can either get the image put on a T-shirt, or you can get yourself a poster, and hang it up somewhere where everyone can see it. We’re fond of the shirt, though — but that could just be us. The Andy vs. Apple T-shirt and poster are now available. You can purchase it for $19 at andyversus.com.. [via droid-life] ) |
| HTC Desire Dummy Handsets Start Making Appearance at TELUS Locations Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:41 PM PDT If you’re on TELUS, up there in Canada, and you’ve been waiting for the HTC Desire to show its beautiful mug, then you’ll be happy to know that you’re one step closer. Why? Because dummy handsets are starting to show up in brick-and-mortar locations. And yes, that means exactly what you think it means: the Desire is coming soon.
Quick reminder about why you should be interested in the Desire. It features a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, Android 2.1, WiFi, GPS, a 5MP camera, and a 1GHz Snapdragon processor with Sense UI. The pricing isn’t so bad, with one year contract it will cost you $499.95, two year contract will cost you $399.95, and three years contract will be $299.95. Could be better, sure, but at least it’s coming, right? [via IntoMobile] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S is Given Free To Frustrated iPhone 4 Users By Samsung UK Posted: 23 Jul 2010 04:33 PM PDT This came out of nowhere. Samsung Mobile UK is giving out Samsung Galaxy S devices to people who have tweeted their iPhone 4 problem. We all know the issues with the iPhone 4 by now, and obviously Samsung wants to capitalize on this. What better way to do that, then to hand out their flagship device to all those unsatisfied with their Apple product?
All of this is happening via Samsung’s Twitter account (@samsungukmobile). They are also just holding a giveaway for anyone who wants to enter (no broken iPhone 4 necessary), and they’ve repeated a few times that they’re excited to be handing out these amazing devices. Now, with that in mind, coupled with the new advertisements (which is pictured above, by the way) for the Galaxy S appearing in some newspapers and other periodicals, it’s obvious Samsung is going what they can to paint Apple in a negative light. | Android 3.0 Won’t Stop HTC From Using Sense Posted: 23 Jul 2010 12:51 PM PDT When news about Google doing everything they could to revamp Android’s stock User Interface in the upcoming 3.0 update, better known as Gingerbread, broke, everyone was immediately asking the necessary questions: what about all the companies out there that have implanted their own custom skins? Of all of them, HTC’s Sense UI is probably the best known, and most widely desired. If you were worried that HTC wouldn’t be able to use Sense on Gingerbread, you can start breathing a bit easier now.
This is what Drew Bamford had to say about the whole situation, while speaking with Forbes: Google, too, has indicated that it wants to make the next (3.0) version of Android more polished and user friendly. Industry observers have speculated that manufacturers like HTC will make fewer alterations on their Android phones as a result. Bamford, however, says he doesn't expect Google's tweaks, which are scheduled to debut before the end of the year, to affect his work. "Google may focus more on improving the user interface on the stock Android [software], but I don't think they'll preclude manufacturer customization," he explains. So, as you can see, Google still plans on making Sense UI a major component to the Android Operating System. No matter how much Google may alter the standard UI for the rest of us, there’s still going to be people who prefer Sense, and others who don’t. The truth is, until we see some screens of Gingerbread on an actual device, none of this really matters. We’ll just keep counting down the days. [via Droid-Life] ) |
