Video: Sesame Street spoofs iPod ads

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 09:25 AM PDT

Apple spoofs are nothing new, but when Sesame Street does them, well let’s just say they’re more warm and fuzzy than snarky and sarcastic. Check out this video of Big Bird, Elmo and pals dancing along with white earbuds, and… what are those… D-Pods?… see the video after the break.

The video, showing Apple iPod-inspired learning from Jim Henson’s creations, was meant as a teaser for Sesame Street’s 40th season, but it also serves as a love letter to Jobs and Co’s most famous creation. Check it out below, and let us know what you think in the comments section. Is this the cutest Apple spoof ever?

PSX4Droid PlayStation emulator hits Android phones

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 09:01 AM PDT

Owners of ‘high end’ Android phones can get a dose of old-school PlayStation action thanks to new emulator PSX4Droid, which has just arrived on the Android market. Providing they have a fairly liberal attitude to intellectual property law.

Unlike the more restrictive Apple App Store, Android phones have a number of emulators available on the Android Market, such as SNESoid and C64 emulator Frodo. A PlayStation emulator has been many a ‘droid user’s holy grail and there have been rumours circulating that ZodTTD and yongzh – two coders responsible for Dr Pocket SNES and SNESoid  respectively – have been working on one.

Well, it’s real and it has just been released. PSX4Droid can play most PlayStation ROMS and is reportedly pretty smooth on all but a few titles. Sound quality is variable, but key titles like Final Fantasy VII and Wip3out have been confirmed as working.

There is a slight elephant in the room – you need to own both ROM files and a PlayStation BIOS file. While ROMs could be easily made from original disks, that BIOS file is something you are probably only going to get from the more dodgy corners of the interwebs. The legality of playing PlayStation games on your phone is somewhat controversial.

Assuming you own the originals, and can play with a relatively clear conscience, you should be aware that the emulator is intended for higher-end Android phones like the Nexus One and Samsung Galaxy S. There is no free ‘Lite’ version available to test if your phone can cope, so this may be a leap of faith for many users.

Sanyo Xacti CA100: 14MP waterproof HD camcorder hits the UK

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 08:08 AM PDT

The Sanyo Xacti CA100, the latest waterproof HD camcorder from the Japanese gadget builders, has splashed into view just in time to catch the tail-end of the sun, sea and sand season. The Sanyo CA9, the last wave-friendly offering from the firm to reach the Electricpig Towers was a little underwhelming but the Sanyo Xacti CA100 comes with some seriously perked up specs…

Waterproof to a depth of 3m, the Sanyo Xacti CA100 will shoot 1080i HD footage at up to 60fps and grab 14MP still images. It's rocking the familiar pistol-grip design we've seen on previous Sanyo video cameras with a 5x optical zoom (12x digital). It comes in shocking pink and yellow versions as well as a sedate black option.

The Sanyo Xacti CA100 records to SD and SDXC card and is compatible with Eye-Fi cards so you can fling your snaps straight up to the web via Wi-Fi. YouTube and Facebook uploading is helped by the fact that the camera grabs its clips in MP4. There's also HDMI out to watch your mini-masterpieces on your HD TV.

Snapping still 14MP gives the Sanyo Xacti CA100 one up on its rivals the Kodak Playsport and Toshiba Camileo BW100 but both those cameras will give capture 1080p HD video.

The Sanyo Xacti CA100 is out now for the slightly pricey sum of £349 but you're bound to be able to get a more palatable price if you shop around.

Paul McKenna iPhone apps: possibly terrifying, definitely expensive

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 08:02 AM PDT

Would you like to stop your mind from racing and feel calm? Would you like to stop the disruption of waking in the night [screaming]? Then you probably shouldn't have spent £6 downloading that Paul McKenna iPhone app.

However, if you are waking up in cold sweats because you've spent £6 on McKenna’s “I Can Make You Sleep” iPhone app, then non other than Paul McKenna has just the app for you. The instant confidence app is a much more reasonable £5.

McKenna’s iPhone app for confidence features, among other things, a panic button, and a 'confidence trance', which is, for the uninitiated, "a mind-programming hypnotic trance". Perfect for when you're on the go.

Ok, so we're expecting all of you who've used McKenna’s multimedia hypnosis products to tell us about how it ‘really works’. But aside from McKenna's mad hypno-skillz, is the iPhone app worth it? Is the app well built? And most importantly, how effective is this 'confidence trance'? We'd really like to know, but are just not feeling, well, confident enough, to sacrifice the cost of our Monday night pints…

HMV Digital: “We are not waging war with iTunes”

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 07:35 AM PDT

hmv digitalHMV has launched a music download service today, HMV Digital. It allows syncing to Windows Media Player and iTunes, but a spokesperson claims that HMV do not intend to be waging a war with iTunes.

As part of the launch, HMV Digital is dropping download prices, and offering five free tracks  and any top 40 track for 40p. The offer won't last though, as Gennaro Castaldo, head of PR at HMV, says: "These offers are just for launch. Although we don't have a formal end date, they will be around for quite a few days at the least. We are not going into a price war with iTunes."

The service is powered by 7Digital, 50 per cent of which is owned by HMV, since last year. The service has 10 million tracks available, (it passed our litmus test for content) and quality ranges from 320kbps for most major new releases, to 192kbps for more obscure artists, meaning that often, for major artists at least, HMV Digital beats iTunes, whose standard bit rate is 256kbps.

Jonathan Southall, marketing manager at 7Digital, said: "75 per cent of our tracks are at 256kbps or 320kbps. Anything below this is largely due to historical hangovers, as we've been ingesting content for seven years. We're ingesting new content and upgrading quality all the time."

To use HMV Digital, the user purchases a 'locker' which stores tracks in the cloud that are accessible through any computer, or on the go.

Will you use HMV Digital or stick to iTunes? Does the service have any key advantages for you?

Nokia C5 review: Ultimate buyer’s guide

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 07:34 AM PDT

Did you see our Nokia C5 review? We quite liked Nokia’s attempt to squeeze high-end features into a low-end blower, though we weren’t quite sure what the market for the phone was. If you think that the market for the phone might be you then look no further than our Nokia C5 review: Ultimate buyer’s guide.

Nokia C5 review: Build and screen
Nokia C5 review: Symbian S60 slimmed down

Best for early adopters

If you just want to get your hands on a Nokia C5 without having to sign up for a new contract or SIM then Expansys and others are selling it in black, unlocked & SIM-free for just £149.99. If you want a little bit more of a bargain and don’t mind a change in colour, you can get the white version of the phone on the same site for a tenner less – although you may have to wait for stocks to come in, whereas the black edition is available for next-day delivery.

Best for data hogs

The C5 doesn’t do wifi, which keeps the cost of the handset down but does mean that a decent data tariff is a must. We can’t imagine many of you will be using the tiny 2.2 inch screen for serious web browsing, but for lighter use and emails, etc. we think you could do worse than sign up for a T-mobile plan for £15/month and use the free flexible booster to get unlimited internet. If you want a reasonable  amount of talk time that will mean 24 months worth of contract for 300 minutes/300 texts but by paying a fiver more you can get the same deal for 18 months instead.

Best for chatterboxes

If you don’t mind slogging through a potential lengthy cashback process, Into Mobile Phones have two good deals – one for T-Mobile at £28.33 for 1200 minutes, + 500 texts the other for Vodafone at £29.72 for 1200 minutes + unlimited texts.

If that sounds like too much work, you can get the same deal on T-Mobile for £40 for 18 months.

Best overall deal

This 18-month T-Mobile deal gives you a good balance of minutes (600) and texts (500) plus a flexible booster pack that will let you choose unlimited data, cheap overseas calls or something more useful to you. £25 quid to you, mate.

New iMac and Mac Pro incoming? Stock shortages say yes!

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 06:32 AM PDT

A new iMac and an update for Apple's professional desktop the Mac Pro could be on the way as stocks for both start to dwindle. Eagle-eyed shelf watchers in the US report that the stores there are running low. Usually when supplies drop like that it's a sign that Apple is preparing to launch new models. But what would a new iMac deliver? Read on for our reading of the retail runes…

Reports suggest that although the Apple Store online is still showing the iMac and Mac Pro shipping "within 24 hours", the trickle of stock to real bricks and mortar stores is starting to be reduced. Whispers from non-Apple stores which stock the iMac suggest they've been struggling to get their hands on fresh supplies.

The iMac last got a refresh in October. Our 27in iMac review declared it the best all-in-one computer out there. So what might Apple do to enhance a new iMac? Whispers suggest we could see a dual-core Intel Core i5 model added to the line up along with a more affordable option packing an Intel Core i3 processor.

The new iMac will apparently see the arrival of USB 3.0 to Apple desktops. The perennial rumours that a touchscreen iMac is on the way are also doing the round again as well as suggestions that the Bluetooth multitouch Magic Slate trackpad will break cover at the same time.

If you're waiting to upgrade, what features do you want to see added by Apple in the new iMac and Mac Pro? And can you see yourself snapping up a Magic Slate if Apple waves its wand and reveals it at the same time?

Daily Star apologises for GTA Raoul Moat fiction

Posted: 26 Jul 2010 05:55 AM PDT

The Daily Star has admitted what everyone else already knew: there is no Grand Theft Auto: Rothbury game and Rockstar games was never planning one. The paper published the false GTA Raoul Moat story on July 21 but has subsequently pulled the story from its website. In its apology, the paper admits that it didn't check that its tale was accurate before phoning grieving relatives about the spoof game cover.

We reported last week that Daily Star journalist Jerry Lawton was unrepentant about his made-up scoop and went on the (even more) offensive on Facebook. He may be a little less bolshy now his bosses have issued a substantial apology to GTA creator Rockstar Games and paid substantial damages.

The paper says: "It is now accepted that there were never any plans by Rockstar Games to publish such a game and that the story was false. We apologise for publishing the story using a mock-up of the game cover, our own comments on the matter and soliciting critical comments from a grieving family member."

The most telling part of The Daily Star's apology is this: "We made no attempt to check the accuracy of the story before publication and did not contact Rockstar Games prior to publishing the story. We also did not question why a best selling and critically acclaimed fictional games series would choose to base one of their most popular games on this horrifying real crime event."

Rockstar’s army of lawyers clearly gave The Daily Star quite a going over. One good thing has come out of the tawdry affair though: it has donated the damages it received from the paper to charity. If you want to read the apology in its entirety, follow the link below but remember that does mean giving The Daily Star more attention. Maybe just read our Red Dead Redemption review instead.
