GE EV Charger Actually Looks Good Posted: 15 Jul 2010 08:49 AM PDT Lookie here, Yves Behar of Fuseproject designed GE’s Wattstation – a smart grid ready Level 2 charging station which means a 240 volt power supply that can be rapidly charged. The modular design makes each station future proof, allowing customers to easily upgrade as more options become available. This allows customers to stay current with the latest technology, while providing the ability for commercial property owners to qualify for LEED points. On average the WattStation decreases EV charging time from 12-18 hours to as little as 4-8 hours compared to standard charging, assuming a 24 kWh battery and a full-cycle charge. How long before we start seeing these pop up all over cities? I’m so giddy to be alive during this great paradigm shift in transportation. Posted: 15 Jul 2010 08:23 AM PDT On June 26th, the Gowanus Studio Space hosted the 2nd annual Jell-O Mold competition in Brooklyn, New York. The competition encouraged artists, designers, chefs, and lovers of Jell–O to use gelatin in new and unexpected ways. A company called The Way We See The World won for sculptural/structural integrity with Jelloware – a set of delicious, squishy, colorful glasses. Jelloware re-imagines the concept of drinking, and imparts a new experience in the way it feels, tastes, smells, moves, and is even disposed of. The cups are made entirely out of agar agar and cast in different flavors, such as lemon-basil, ginger-mint, or rosemary-beet. All are specifically designed to compliment a corresponding drink. Jelloware is meant to be thrown into the grass after it is used, as agar agar is a seaweed extract and actually nurtures the growth of plants. Designer: The Way We See The World ---------- |
Posted: 15 Jul 2010 08:20 AM PDT Teach those little rug rats to pick up after themselves by giving a simple toy chest an anthropomorphic identity. Toy Guardian is monster on wheels, hungry and ready to eat up all your toys but don’t worry, he’ll only keep them until you need them again. What a great way to teach kids (and adults like me) some important life skills. Not to mention this thing is uber cute and I want one! The Toy Guardian is a 2010 IDEA Design Winner. Posted: 15 Jul 2010 05:32 AM PDT Pratt Student Nick Foley has designed the Etta as a new-age urban commuter bicycle that is safer, more convenient, and more accessible to non-cyclists than traditional bicycles. Drawing on his own experience of working in a cycle shop and recreational cycling, Nick brings us a version that is easy on your posture, finds a new place to stash your load and aesthetically appealing. The highlights are integrated storage with a low center-of-gravity; integrated lighting and theft-proof nighttime safety. Light and compact, this is one bike I'm ready to test ride NOW! Posted: 15 Jul 2010 05:04 AM PDT Innovations in oral hygiene usually come in the form of the toothbrush or the toothpaste; rarely is the issue of contamination addressed. Yeah, our bathrooms are filled with goop that can affect our health and sometimes they do take a ride to our system via the toothbrush. Most of us don't fear this, but for those who care, Tocsy is your answer. What works in favor of this toothbrush sterilizer is that it hooks up to your computer via USB, for power. So no batteries and finding place for it in cramped bathrooms required. Designer: Jang Mi Sook ---------- |
Posted: 15 Jul 2010 03:33 AM PDT You may be wondering what this glass-alarm has to do with your morning bowel routine. First off, a warm glass of water as soon as you wake up is the perfect way to start your day. It helps in detoxing your body and gets your bowels moving. So there! now to establish relation with the "Revive Glass"…it's an alarm clock that holds a glass of water. Half hour before your alarm is to go off, the base starts warming up the water, so that you drink it warm enough. The alarm shuts off only when you pick up the glass of water. I totally dig the time being read thru water! Looks awesome! Designers: Kai-ning Huang & Yu-Yang Chen ---------- |
World’s Largest Wristbound Curve Posted: 15 Jul 2010 12:15 AM PDT When you’ve got a watch on your wrist, you’re constantly saying something about yourself. That’s changed since the beginning of watches. When wrist watches were first invented, you definitely said something about your identity when you wore one. Then there was a long period when everyone had one – it was standard to have one. Now, in this age of pocket-sitting clocks on mobile phones, again the age of wrist clock fashion is born. Curve ID knows this. What Curve ID presents here is two different wrist watches, both of them for the NIKE corporation. You’ll see the lighter-gray watch that goes by then name Triax Mia, very sassy, then there’s the Vapor 300 which boasts the market’s largest curved LED screen. How about that? Beirut’s Most Fabulous Wine Bar Posted: 15 Jul 2010 12:11 AM PDT I don’t generally like to rate a restaurant or bar without having been there to taste their rootbeer, but this looks amazing. This is “Burgundy” wine bar/restaurant, Beirut – Lebanon. Look at those lights! Hanging near wooden beams that slice through a wire mesh covering the ceiling, these light objects are made up of conical tubes filling a hypothetical spherical area. Under the lights, a substructure divided into one area for the bar and another for dining. The lights are meant to recall chandeliers, the cluster of tubes shooting from the center creating the effect of singular light sources being filtered in oh-such a pretty way. In a similar vein, the entryway is lit by a set of black projectors. It’s interesting to design a bar or restaurant, I’d imagine, since unless you’re working on a kid-centric establishment, you’ve gotta be ever-so-slight with your expression. Food-centric! .PSLAB rocks it. Designer: .PSLAB Beirut ---------- |
Posted: 15 Jul 2010 12:02 AM PDT Wha? But doesn’t that mean it’s good? The foam? Well, I’d hope your beer’d have at least a little foam, but nay! You want smooth, tasty, liquid beer, not beer in bubble form. So what do you do? You tip your glass at an angle while you pour the beer inside. Now… what if the beer glass was already tipped, erasing that step in between you, your drink, and that perfect moment when it hits your lips? Oh man, here it is! It’s the “Cerve-cero” beer mug by Sinapsis Team. They’ve got it going on right here. You can let the mug sit there on its side too, or if you’re in a bar, tell people that this side-sitting is how they should set their mug if they need a refill. Tasty. Electrolux Design Lab: The Final Countdown Posted: 14 Jul 2010 10:34 AM PDT We have been tracking the Top 25 of Electrolux Design Lab entries here on YD and now it's time to reveal the Final Eight. The booty at the end of the rainbow for the deserving winner will be 5000 Euros and a six-month paid internship at the Electrolux Global Design Center. Every young designer who is just starting out knows that adding this internship to his resume is going to carry a lot of weight. While I wish all the 8 finalists best of luck, I'd also like to remind the YD readers that I've written in detail about 4 of these designs earlier, and pretty soon I'll be covering the rest, just to know your views.
