Motorola Droid 2 Training Guide Leaked, Still Needs to be Announced

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 10:24 AM PDT

Okay, so we get it. The Droid 2 is real, it exists somewhere outside of our collective imaginations, and it’s coming to Verizon. Eventually. Some day, it’s coming. And, just as we saw with the official user manual of the device last week, we get to see the full details of the upcoming smartphone well before Verizon has actually officially said anything about the device’s existence.

In any event, here’s the training manual, leaked to Droid-Life. There’s even a comparison chart, which will put the Droid 2 up against the competition that’s out there. Like the iPhone 4, the HTC EVO, and the HTC HD2. Basically, the top devices on the other carriers. No surprise there, as comparison charts are a great way to teach customers about what’s great and what’s not, right there in a nice little graph.

As for the details in the training manual, that goes something like this: the Droid 2 will feature a remote lock & wipe, features “DVD quality” video recording, corpoate exchange/ActiveSync has been impoved (does that mean it works?), and the true successor to the original Droid is . . . (wait for it) . . . Being pushed as a replacement device to the original Droid.

Other than that, there’s nothing here that we didn’t already know. So, if you already haven’t picked up your Droid X, or you’re waiting for it, are you now considering the Droid 2 as your next device instead? After all, it has that new-and-improved hardware QWERTY keyboard, and the screen is a bit smaller than the X’s. Which we know some folks out there still like. Let us know in the comments.

Samsung YP-MB2 Poses for Photo

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 10:06 AM PDT

When it comes to the Samsung manufactured YP-MB2, all we’ve seen up until now are some screenshots, and heard a few rumors here and there about the supposed feature-set of the Personal Media Player. Positioned as a true contender for the personal media crown (up against those iDevices, you know), we’ve been waiting for the longest time to get a “real” shot of the device. And, on a Monday, here we are, staring right at it.

And, as anyone would have guessed, the YP-MB2 looks exactly like a Galaxy S. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but considering how many Galaxies are floating around out there, we’d think that Samsung would want a little aesthetic differentiation out there. But, apparently not. The only thing it seems to be missing is a front-facing camera, and on the back the camera is only 3.2MP. But hey, at least it has as camera, right?

Samsung is reportedly going to officially announce this media device on August 11th. So, we don’t have that long to wait at all. And, basically, you should start hoping and praying (and crossing your fingers) that this gets an official release date here in the States, or we’ll be pining for the rest of our lives. As for memory, that’s supposedly set at 8, 16, or 32GB. Oh, and let’s go ahead and cross our toes and hope it’s coming with something other than Android 1.6, shall we?

Motorola Sage Spied, MOTOBLUR Alive and Well

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 09:57 AM PDT

With the launch of the Motorola Droid X, and the impending addition of the Droid 2, Motorola seemed to be pretty excited about their new skin of MOTOBLUR. It’s not as “in-your-face” as the first variation, and that’s a good thing in a lot of different ways. But, that’s not stopping Motorola from putting the obtrusive customized skin on future phones, ones that perhaps don’t fit with the whole “DROID” lineage. For example, here’s the first spy shots (supposedly) of the Motorola Sage. And yes, that’s very much MOTOBLUR.

The Sage is a smartphone, running Android 2.1 and featuring the old-school BLUR User Interface. It also featurs a 3.1-inch capacitive touchscreen display, and what appears to be a very strange trackpad right there at the center-bottom of the device. It also has a full physical QWERTY keyboard that will slide out into the world. You also get the standard WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as a 3.5mm audio jack. There’s even a digital compass on board.

The report says that the device is heading to AT&T, and we can believe that. Either them or T-Mobile, and considering the Magenta carrier is focusing on some high-end devices at the moment, we would be surprised to see this one sneak in. Plus, this “mid-range” smartphone would be a standard addition for AT&T. In any event, here’s the first shots of it — was it worth the wait?

Motorola Droid Doesn’t Have the Hardware for WiFi or USB Tethering

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 09:48 AM PDT

One of the greatest parts of Android 2.2, is the fact that both WiFi and USB tethering are included in the software upgrade. That’s only one of the great parts, mind you — but it was still something that people were looking forward to. Unfortunately, if you’re eagerly awaiting that Froyo upgrade set to launch some time this week for your original Droid, you’ll be sad to hear that, apparently, it doesn’t have the hardware to do those things.

That’s the official word from Verizon, it seems. Thanks to Phone Scoop, who spoke with a Verizon spokesperson, we can confirm that the Droid doesn’t have the hardware to run WiFi tethering. And, as for USB tethering, there’s reportedly no connection on the PC side that supports it. So, that’s not an option, either. As for the OTA update that’s supposed to start this week? They’re doing what they normally: a small test group will get the update first, and when that checks out, they will begin rolling it out to the rest of the Droid owners out there.

So what do you think? Do you believe the story from Verizon, despite the fact that there’s plenty of folks out there utilizing WiFi tether and USB tethering on their Droid right now? You be the judge, and let us know in the comments.

HTC HD2 gets functional Froyo ROM [Video]

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 07:42 AM PDT

Last we saw of the efforts to get Android 2.2 Froyo running on the HTC HD2, the Google OS would load but there were some potentially deal-breaking 3G and audio issues.  Happily the xda-developers community never sleeps, and now a new ROM release delivers what looks to be a 99-percent complete Froyo experience for the HD2.

HDBlog.it shot a video demo of the new ROM in action, complete with a Minimal Matte skin that provides a neatly different user experience not only to the HD2’s original Windows Mobile 6.5.3 OS but what you’ll find on true HTC Android handsets.  WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth (aside from the HID profile), 3G, the camera (including flash) and most other things are functional, so this sounds like a ROM you could actually comfortably live with day to day.

HTC Desire HD and Desire Z spotted at Vodafone Germany

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 04:47 AM PDT

Two new HTC smartphones have apparently been spotted in Vodafone Germany’s database, and the names should be familiar from previous rumors.  According to BestBoyz, the HTC Desire HD (aka the HTC Ace) and the HTC Desire Z (aka the HTC Vision) are both imminently close to launch.

The HTC Desire HD is tipped to have the 4.3-inch WVGA display of the HTC EVO 4G but cater for the UMTS/HSPA 3G networks of Europe.  It’s also expected to use Qualcomm’s 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, along with an 8-megapixel camera capable of 720p HD video recording.

As for the HTC Desire Z, that’s been spotted before wearing T-Mobile branding, and is basically an HTC Desire with an added slide-out QWERTY keyboard.  That means a 3.7-inch display, 1GHz CPU and 5-megapixel camera.

Notion Ink Adam Android Tablet gets Froyo lovin’

Posted: 02 Aug 2010 04:45 AM PDT

Notion ink has taken its Adam Android tablet and had it “blessed” by pagan gods to help ensure success. I think the better way to be sure the tablet goes over well would be to make it work and stuff.

The Adam tablet will come to market sporting Android 2.2 Froyo. Some speculation had the device coming later with Android 3.0 otherwise known as gingerbread under the hood.

The tablet will sport the second gen NVIDIA Tegra chipset and will have two screen options with a regular LCD and a Pixel Qi screen. The device will have full HD video support and HDMI out along with a custom UI and multitouch capability.
