Motorola Handing Out Free TouchDown Licenses

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 09:54 AM PDT

For the most part, the Droid X launched without much mishaps. There was a few reports of 3G connectivity going down at corporate stores and what not, but that’s not surprising, considering how many new devices were trying to access the network at once. But, not everything is perfect. The device does suffer from some heinous connections to ActiveSync and Exchange servers. While your device may be getting the emails, you’re probably not receiving any notifications (after the initial one, after the set-up process). Well, Motorola knows it’s a problem, and they intend to fix it with the update to Android 2.2. But, for now, they have a different plan.

There’s an application available in the Android Market, called TouchDown. It’s created to deliver a precise, and functioning ActiveSync and Exchange email connection. It’s a great application, that many folks have downloaded (and paid for) over time. It works for both Android 1.6+ devices, as well as Android 2.x handsets. But, it does cost money — and for Droid X owners, that wasn’t a viable option. That’s why Motorola is going to go ahead and give you a free license to the application.

That should take care of the problems with your work or corporate email, at least until Motorola can fix the problem with their native client. That should be coming at some point in the early stages of September, so the wait isn’t too long. And, if you just want to try out NitroDesk’s TouchDown email client, there’s a free 30 day trial. Good news all around, if you ask us. Hit up the source link for the instructions on how to get your license key.

Verizon’s Motorola DROID 2 looks to be imminent, with the new QWERTY smartphone showing up in the carrier’s 360-degree viewer.  The viewer update follows on from the handset being spotted in a Verizon InfoManager page, complete with full specifications, and devices already showing up in Best Buy stores.

Nokia has no plans for Android devices

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 04:33 AM PDT

Much of the talk in the smartphone market tends to center on Apple, Android, and RIM devices. Despite the fact that these three tend to grab much of the headlines in the smartphone world, Nokia is still the clear leader in the market.

Nokia has 38% of the global smartphone market. The company relies on Symbian as its OS of choice, but that is changing to MeeGo with the next generation of smart devices. Some are wondering if Nokia will offer Android smartphones considering the appeal with consumers.

Nokia has answered that question with a firm no. Nokia’s Niklas Savander has stated that Nokia doesn't want to hand over its destiny to a third party, which is Google in the case of Android. Nokia remains committed to MeeGo and Symbian.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Launching on AT&T August 15th

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 02:53 PM PDT

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 has been one of the most talked about Android-based devices for awhile now, and one of those bullet points was the constant speculation about whether or not the device would make an appearance on AT&T’s network. Today, we can safely say that the device is coming, as the wireless carrier have officially announced the device.

The launch date is August 15th, which is a Sunday. It will be priced at $129.99, which is based on you signing over a new, two-year contract. The Xperia X10 will launch with Android 1.6, and there’s still no word on when the device will get upgraded to Android 2.x, but there’s a lot of speculation for some time later this year. It does feature a 1GHz processor, a 4-inch capacitive touchscreen, and an 8.1MP camera on the back. The hardware is there, but the software version just doesn’t cut it.

Motorola Fixing Low-Level Notification Sounds in Next Update

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 02:13 PM PDT

We know that Motorola is planning on fixing the ActiveSync/Exchange email issues with the Droid X software update that’s scheduled to release some time in the early weeks of September. However, if you’re also having some trouble with your notification volume level, don’t freak out. You’re not the only one having the issue, and apparently after Motorola checked into it, they’ve discovered that it is a real problem. Their solution? A software fix.

No surprise there. But, this time around, they just say with a future software update. No word on whether or not it will be the Android 2.2 update, or one after that. We’d be willing to bet that it will be the Froyo update, but stranger things have happened, we imagine. In the mean time though, you can check out the forum post, and find out from Matt which ringtones are the loudest — so hopefully they’re your favorite.

Motorola Droid 2 Selling for $199 at Best Buy, Units Begin Appearing in Verizon Inventory

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 01:57 PM PDT

August 12th, the Motorola Droid 2 is getting launched. That’s this Thursday, for the record (and if you weren’t around a calendar). With that being said, it looks like Best Buy have gone ahead and ruined the whole pricing story, too, and pointed out that the Droid 2 will be available there, for $199 on a new, two-year contract. That’s excluding the mail-in rebate, that you’ll have to pay at a Verizon corporate store.

If you don’t want to add a line, or get a new line, you can just buy the device out right, as well. That’s right, they also listed their full retail price. That will run you $599. Remember: August 12th. As for Verizon inventory, apparently that’s begun to get stocked as well. Just in time, if you ask us.

TweetDeck for Android Beta Coming This Week

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 01:11 PM PDT

When it comes to Twitter clients, we are all fully aware that Android has plenty of options. And, by now, you’ve probably already decided which one you like the best, for the most obvious, and perhaps not so obvious, reasons. Or, perhaps you’ve just settled on one because you’ve been waiting for one particular application to reach the Android Market. If that client is TweetDeck, then you should be pretty excited by the news that title up there suggests.

Because, TweetDeck have just announced that a public Beta is one its way to the Android platform. And, what’s better, is that it’s going to open up starting some day this week. But, this isn’t just a port of the iOS version, or some knock-off that the company doesn’t care about. Nope. This is built from the ground up, designed specifically for Android, and meant to bring all of the great features that have made the platform so warmly welcomed into so many people’s lives, right there in the palm of your hand.

They even say that they’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time making the application silky smooth for Android, and that makes us plenty happy. So, if you use TweetDeck on your computer at home, then here’s a great way to make use of that integration from one source to another. No exact dates have been listed, but as soon as we know more, you will too.

General Dynamics GD300 is a Wrist-Mounted GPS Unit that Uses Android

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 12:04 PM PDT

The United States military seems to love Android. We couldn’t be happier with the union, truth be told. We know the two entities will go a long way to further each other’s lives. We’ve already seen the results of an application showdown, and now we get to see our first glimpse of a wrist-mounted GPS unit that will allow soldiers out in the field to keep tabs on their unit, as well as up-to-the-minute GPS imagery.

The GD300 (we’ll go ahead and assume that that GD at the beginning stands for General Dynamics) packs Android inside of it, and it’s as durable as you might expect from looking at it. It packs a 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 processor under the hood, features 256MB of RAM, an has 8GB of internal memory. It also has a 3.5-inch touchscreen that’s “glove ready.” We think that may mean resistive touchscreen, but we can’t be sure — but it wouldn’t be surprising. The resolution of the display is 800×480. Sure, nothing stands out in of itself, but let’s face it: Android’s out there, in the field, getting ready to put in work. How awesome is that?

Motorola Droid 2 Specs Leaked in Verizon InfoManager Screenshot

Posted: 09 Aug 2010 11:26 AM PDT

We would have put “again” in the title, but we’re pretty sure that’s been run to the ground by now. Maybe the phone itself has, too. That would be your call, not ours. Here’s the Droid 2 leak of the week, this time coming from an internal Verizon InfoManager page. As you can see, and as the title suggests, it’s the normal “specifications” sheet that we’re all so accustomed to.

Basically, it’s the easiest way to see, on one page, what all of the main features of a device are. In the case of the Droid 2, there’s nothing new or exciting here. It still features that 5MP camera, 8GB of internal storage, the 1GHz processor, and the Motoblur User Interface. It has a full, landscape slider QWERTY keyboard, and a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display. And, just in case we weren’t already sure, the August 12th release date is listed on the page, too. So, yeah. Who’s going to pick this guy up?
