TweetDeck for Android Leaks to the Wild [Update]

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 09:32 AM PDT

When TweetDeck promised that a public Beta would be made available some time this week, we don’t imagine that this is exactly what they meant. But, then again, unless this isn’t the final version, at least it means that plenty of folks out there are going to be able to get their hands on it, and try it out on their own devices. And, we’re sure that’s exactly what TweetDeck folks want.

As the title suggests, the Twitter client has made its way onto the Internet, and if you’re interested, you can go ahead and download it right now. Again, there’s no telling whether or not this is the final version that TweetDeck proper will release some time this week, but we imagine it is. No reason to think it isn’t, really. So, if you download it, let us know what you think in the comments. You can download it from right here.

[Update] All right, folks. As many people have figured out just by downloading the leaked version, TweetDeck has confirmed that this isn’t the final build of TweetDeck. In fact, it is an old build, and as far as we can tell, it’s only meant for devices with larger screens. That’s why many folks are experiencing buggy behavior, as well as missing features, and hard to navigate menus. Oh, and one more thing: the Beta is dropping tomorrow. That’s directly from TweetDeck’s Twitter account. So, start holding your breath, folks.

[thanks, Abed!]

HTC EVO 4G Froyo 2.2 update fixes dodgy predecessor

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 05:37 AM PDT

It’s obviously the week that Froyo is on the menu, with Sprint pushing out a new incremental update for the HTC EVO 4G that takes it from the “unofficial” 3.26.651.3 version of Android 2.2 released last week to a supposedly more stable 3.26.651.6 release.  According to a Sprint admin, the upgrade itself is “very small”, suggesting that the Android 2.2 package that went out recently was all but polished for the EVO 4G.

Still, some users have been reporting poor battery life, loss of calendar or contacts entries, and generally sluggish performance with the previous update, and so hopefully this will address those problems.  If you’re too impatient to wait for the OTA update to be offered, you can trigger it by choosing “HTC software update” from the Updates section of the settings menu.

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 05:22 AM PDT

We’re hearing from Android Community readers that the Android 2.2 Froyo update for the Motorola DROID has gone live, with OTA upgrades for the Verizon Wireless smartphone being offered across the US.

The update brings with it speed and stability improvements, though we’re yet to confirm whether Verizon have stripped out Froyo’s wireless hotspot feature as is so useful on the Nexus One.  Anybody with the update care to fill us in?

[Thanks everybody!]

US Pricing for Dell Streak and Availability finally surface

Posted: 11 Aug 2010 04:44 AM PDT

I you have been waiting for that Dell Streak MID to finally get official pricing and availability your wait is over. Dell has finally offered up the last few details we need to decide if the device is for us or not. The Streak will land on August 13.

You will spend $300 for the MID with a new contract for data. The Streak has a 5-inch screen, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS capability, and a 1GHz CPU under the sleek hood. Dell didn't give us any idea on exactly what version of Android is being used.

We would assume Android 1.6 to be on the safe side and hope an upgrade will be offered sooner rather than later. If you don't want that AT&T data plan the full price for the MID is $550.

Adobe Shows Off Flash Player on the Motorola Droid 2

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:37 PM PDT

We all know that the Motorola Droid 2 is launching on August 12th. Pre-orders start tomorrow, folks. And, we all know that Android 2.2 is coming pre-installed on the device, as it’s one of the main selling points of the upgraded Droid model. And with Froyo, also comes Flash Player. While there’s been a huge furor over whether or not it even works on the device, as many original Droid owners are having a heck of a time with their own upgrade to Froyo and utilizing the software, it looks like Adobe themselves wanted to calm folks down. So, here’s a video.

And, sure enough, it looks like it works. And, we can confirm that Adobe’s Flash Player is definitely featured right on the Droid 2’s box, so it’s a pretty big deal to Motorola, Verizon, and of course Adobe. However, to get into the details, it looks like Adobe currently has their Flash Player 10.1 Beta at version number 3, and the final version is all set to get released on August 16th at the Adobe Android summit. So, that should mean all the other devices out there that can use the service, will be able to without a problem. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy S line-up, the Droid X, and the HTC Incredible should all get updated in due time.

TweetDeck for Android Gets Shown Off by TweetDeck CEO

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:30 PM PDT

While we all wait for the public Beta of TweetDeck for Android to kick off some time this week, why not subject ourselves to a nice little tease of the software running on a Nexus One? That sounds like a plan, right? Good. Because the TweetDeck CEO, Iain Dodsworth, has gone on record, thanks to his Twitter account, and shown off what it’s like to sign into the mobile client of their famous Twitter client.

Of special note, and something you’ll probably want to watch over and over again in your excitement, is the way that TweetDeck for Android handles multiple accounts. Basically, it looks like it’s a dream come true, and we can’t wait to get our hands on it. Now, we’re just waiting on the edge of our chairs, ready for TweetDeck to tell us when we can download it. Now?

HTC Desire for Vodafone Getting Android 2.2 in the Coming Week or So

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:22 PM PDT

When the Vodafone-branded HTC Desire got Android 2.1, it was blanketed with plenty of Vodafone’s 360 features. So much so, in fact, that plenty of customers out there weren’t happy with the update to their software version at all. Thankfully, Vodafone’s one of those wireless companies that actually listen to their customers, and have answered back, and informing customers just want it means to get the Android 2.2 update. Which, for the record, is supposed to be releasing in the next seven to 10 days.

Here’s the official statement from Vodafone:

"We've listened to feedback from customers on a number of points around the recent 360 Android 2.1 update and made some changes to the roll out plan.

The Android 2.2 update for Vodafone HTC Desire users will be based on the HTC open market version of the software and we will customise it to ensure our network settings are installed.

For customers who have downloaded the recent 360 update for Android 2.1, we can confirm that the Android 2.2 update will remove the 360 applications and will leave the homepage and bookmarks on your current settings.
Customers who want to access the 360 services will be able to do so once the Android 2.2 compatible version is available and, in the meantime, can now download apps like 360 People from the Android Marketplace.

We plan to make the 360 apps available in a separate update for the HTC Desire at a later date, giving customers the choice to download it. We will let you know when the date for delivery of the Android 2.2 update is finalised, but, subject to testing, we expect this to be in 7-10 days time."

So, as you can see, they’re taking it pretty seriously this time around. And, we’ve got to point out that they’re actually going to delete some of their old applications, just to make customers happy. How awesome is that? Not only that, but if you do still want one or two of them, or all of them, they’re going to make them available, after their own updates, in the Android Market. Again, classy move, Vodafone. So, all you Desire owners out there with the brand, excited yet?

Samsung Epic 4G Set to Launch August 21st?

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:15 PM PDT

We’re not sure when it happened, but some how the Samsung Epic 4G has managed to gotten itself caught up in some wild accusations regarding its release date. For the most part, and especially compared to other devices, the rumor mill consisting of the banter about its suspected release date has been pretty quiet. But, as we inch closer to that August 11th announcement date (without so much of a peep from the third largest wireless carrier in the States), we’re beginning to assume that maybe that date isn’t right.

So, doing a little searching, and we find that a member of the Android Central forum says that, according to folks he knows close to the matter, the Epic 4G is actually going to be able to start ordering Epic inventory on August 16th, and then be able to sell them on the 21st of the same month. There’s still a chance that Sprint could come swinging out of the door tomorrow, officially announcing that the device will be made available for purchase on August 21st, with a pre-sale starting on August 16th (or whenever). But, we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see how that one turns out. Anyone think it’s the 21st?

Samsung Galaxy Tab Tablet Set to Show Off at IFA 2010

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:08 PM PDT

There were some grumblings that the Galaxy Tab from Samsung, the Galaxy S-based tablet, would be unveiled some time this week, but apparently that’s not the case anymore. Samsung Hub has heard that the device will actually be shown off next month, in September, at this year’s IFA.

The word is coming down from a “high-ranking official,” who also says that plenty of other Samsung manufactured goodies are also going to be shown off at the event. However, the only thing we know that’s Android-based is going to be the Tab, so that’s all that’s really important. The tablet features a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen, it has Android 2.2 under the hood, and it’s also got the same 1GHz Hummingbird processor chugging everything along. Whether or not the IFA event will also tell us when the device will be available, and for how much, is anyone’s guess. And, for the record, the Galaxy Tab is not model number NX100. So, if you see that around, that’s not the case.

Sprint and Warner Brothers Entertainment Giving Away 10 Samsung Epic 4G Devices

Posted: 10 Aug 2010 05:02 PM PDT

It may not be the easiest way to get a device, but it may be one of the funnest. Like most of Sprint’s high-profile handset releases, they’re doing what they can to make sure that a few lucky folks out there in Sprintland get their very own, without doing much at all in the way of work, or, paying. This time around they’re working with Warner Brothers Entertainment, and they’re handing out 10 Samsung Epic 4Gs.

The Epic is a 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Samsung Galaxy S device. It’s one of the many variants that Samsung announced for the US market, and it’s the most diverse of the bunch. Featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and the ability to connect to Sprint’s 4G WiMAX network, it’s definitely got the features to back the muscle.

Follow through the source link below and follow the on-screen instructions. You don’t have to do much here — after all, it’s a giveaway. You’re supposed to feel like you got lucky, you know? Once you sign up, and if you get lucky enough to win the grand prize, you’d win a four day, three night trip to any destination of your choice (with one guest). Oh, and you also get $1,000.00 for the troubles, too. That’s one way to make sure that you go the distance, we guess.
