Toshiba Android Tablet Launching by October Posted: 18 Aug 2010 10:53 AM PDT Tablets are the new thing now-a-days, and it looks like Toshiba is getting ready to launch themselves into the market. And, of course, Android will play a big role in it, too. According to DigiTimes, who are getting their information from particular Taiwan-based manufacturers, Toshiba is getting ready to launch their own tablet, set to hit the shelves no later than this October.
The report goes on to say that the tablet will be 10-inches, run on the Android Operating System, and have NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 processor tucked inside. Basically, it sounds like it has the potential to be a great machine, but with only three features to go off of here, we can’t say for certain that we’re excited quite yet. Not that Toshiba can’t make a great tablet, we’ll just wait to hold our judgment until we see something like a picture. [via DigiTimes] ) |
Samsung Vibrant for T-Mobile $99.99 Today Only Posted: 18 Aug 2010 09:14 AM PDT The Samsung Galaxy S variant for T-Mobile, known as the Vibrant, has just taken a drastic price cut. In a move that’s become somewhat normal from the magenta carrier, one of their high-profile devices will go on sale for one day only. Whether this is to stimulate some sales that have slumped off since its launch, or T-Mobile’s just being nice, no one knows. Either way, though, you get a killer deal on an amazing device.
We’ve heard about these phones enough times to know the specs, but here’s one more go: a 4-inch Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen display with WVGA resolution. There’s a 1GHz Hummingbird processor under the hood. Samsung chose Android 2.1 to run the show, but they used their proprietary User Interface skin, known as TouchWiz 3.0, to hide everything. T-Mobile managed to snag some exclusives, though. For example, the Vibrant features The Sims 3 from publisher EA, which is the Collector’s Edition. It also comes with James Cameron’s epic film, AVATAR. And then you get all the normal goodies like Kindle For Android, Slacker Radio, and the ability to access the Android Market. Like we said above, the deal’s only going on for a day, so get online and head on over to T-Mobile’s website to get your ordering on. That’s right — it’s an exclusive online deal. [via Tmo News] ) |
Notion Ink Adam Getting SDK Called Genesis Posted: 18 Aug 2010 08:34 AM PDT One of the most talked about tablets out there, even if it isn’t released, is Notion Ink’s Adam. It’s a full-featured tablet that, on more than one occasion, has been said to be the true iPad killer. One aspect of that is the implementation of Android underneath the hood. And, even if there have been plenty of set-backs for the company, from both investors and manufacturing standpoints, the company still plans on releasing the product some time this year. With that in mind, they’ve even formulated a Software Developer Kit (SDK).
The framework is called Genesis, and it basically outlines how Notion Ink is going to try and let developers out there add a more enriched experience, outside of the normal Android offerings. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of details here, so it must still be early-on in staged development. As soon as we know more, we’ll pass it along. Anyone out there still interested in the Adam? HSPA+ T-Mobile G2 teaser site launches Posted: 18 Aug 2010 05:44 AM PDT T-Mobile has launched a new teaser site for their latest Android smartphone, the T-Mobile G2 with Google. The first HSPA+ capable smartphone to their network, details on the G2 are in short supply right now; only a vague outline of the handset has been shown, though we have heard various rumors about different T-Mobile devices in the past. That includes the T-Mobile G1 Blaze (aka the HTC Vision), a slider-QWERTY handset made by HTC and that would certainly fit in with the carrier’s comments that the G2 is the “successor” of the original G1. However, we’ve also heard talk of the T-Mobile myTouch HD, a large-screen version of the keyboard-free myTouch 3G. Both are believed to be part of T-Mobile’s Project Emerald. The carrier says it will release more information on the T-Mobiel G2 in the coming weeks, with existing subscribers getting early access to the Android handset. [via SlashGear] ) |
Android powered eLocity A7 tablet to hit pre-order August 24 Posted: 18 Aug 2010 04:49 AM PDT The iPad is burning up the sales charts and putting a serious crimp in the sales numbers of some major netbook players like Asus. Many of these traditional companies that are into netbooks and notebooks are looking to Android tablets to fight the iPad.
The latest such iPad competitor is set to launch in about a week and is called the eLocity A7. The tablet is still a bit secretive at this point and all the maker will tell us is that the A7 runs Android and has a 7-inch screen. The tablet physically measures 8.2″ x 4.8″ and is designed for portability. Presumably the device will be able to stream mobile TV shows since its being pushed by Stream TV Networks and web surfing and Android Market access are undoubtedly going to be present. We will get the full details on the 24th. ) |
Motorola Charm for Telus Now Available Posted: 17 Aug 2010 02:04 PM PDT If you find yourself in Canada, then you know that you’re Android offerings may not have started off all that well, but it’s certainly getting better. Now, for those of you on the Telus network (or thinking about switching), you have one more option to choose from. Telus has just made official its offering of the Motorola Charm, the little Motoblur-fused device that also has some other interesting features, at least in the hardware department.
First off, it’s the first device running Android (to actually come to market) that’s equipped more like a BlackBerry than a traditional Android smartphone. Featuring a full, physical QWERTY keyboard right on the front, with capacitive touch buttons right above that for Home, Menu, and Back, the Charm definitely stands out amongst its Android brethren. Also, it has a trackpad on the back of the device, much like Motorola’s other Android offering, the Backflip (which launched on AT&T awhile back). It features a QVGA display (and it is a touchscreen), integrated WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G, and GPS, and has a 3MP camera on the back. Software wise, it’s launching with Android 2.1 — so that’s good news. Unfortunately, there’s no word on when yu should expect to get upgraded to Android 2.2. Or, truth be told, if you’ll be getting upgraded. However, with the update to 2.1, it does bring some new features to the customized User Interface. For example, you can resize widgets, whenever you want. Price wise, you’re looking at $29.99 for a three year, new contract. Or, if you want to buy it out-right, that’ll run you a cool $249.99. Worth the price? Probably. [via TELUS] ) |
Android to Ship on More Than 55 Million Units in 2010 Posted: 17 Aug 2010 12:41 PM PDT It’s no secret that Android’s a steamroller. And, considering the push for the mobile Operating System from major manufacturers like Motorola, Samsung, and HTC, there’s no reason that will stop any time soon. In fact, it’s only going to pick up pace. With Google confirming that there’s hundreds of thousands of Android handsets sold every day, these estimations from Digitimes Research come as no surprise to us. Their results? That Android’s climbing, and it’s going to sell a ridiculous amount of devices this year.
According to the research, Android’s presence in the smartphone market rose from just 5 percent in 2009, to reach 13.8% in just the first half of 2010. Projections state that, by the second half of 2010, those numbers will climb to 24.5%, which will officially make Android the second most popular smartphone OS on the market. Interestingly enough, the research claims that the majority of Android-based handsets are going to come from LG and Samsung. It gets really interesting when you look at the jump in sales. According to the research, shipments of Android-based smartphones is going to explode to 561% from a year ago, which will eaqual more than 55 million units in 2010. Basically, incredible numbers for Google, and it just goes to show how successful Android is. And it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. Which just means more, excellent handsets for us to stare and drool at. [via DigiTimes] ) |
Archos A28 Tablet Passes Through FCC Posted: 17 Aug 2010 12:01 PM PDT The Archos branded tablets keep on comin’. While news of the Archos 32 just broke not too long ago, apparently there was another tablet taking the FCC journey at the same time. The Archos A28 tablet is, actually, not a tablet at all, shockingly enough. In point of fact, it looks like Archos is making a cell phone — even if they are still going to label it a tablet, even after it launches.
Just like the Archos 32, the A28’s display doesn’t necessarily fall into the whole “tablet” region. The A28’s display is even smaller, coming in at a whopping 2.8-inches. It’s a touchscreen, obviously, but no word on resistive or capacitive as of now. There’s 8GB of internal memory, and integrated WiFi. The battery is only 600mAh, so you probably shouldn’t expect great things to come from this guy when you’re not plugged in. At least, not for any length of time. There’s one 3.5mm audio port at the top of the device, and the standard USB port, too. Again, (despite it being a standard USB port and not, say, a microUSB port) they don’t seem to be going out of their way to make this look like a tablet, more than anything else. The FCC filing did include the A28’s manual, but there’s nothing groundbreaking found inside. We’re not sure if Archos is intending to drown the market with Android products, but they’re definitely doing a good job of it. [via LAPTOP Mag] ) |
