| Android Market Growing Exponentially – Now with more than 80,000 apps Posted: 09 Sep 2010 07:51 AM PDT Google's Vice President of engineering, Andy Rubin, was quoted in the press release announcing the G2 that the Android Market now boasts 80,000+ applications. The last time we heard about Market Applications was back on July 15th where the number was currently residing around 10,000.
Android is clearly growing exponentially as it's market share in the US and around the world grows. Now with this number we do not know how many of these apps are "spam apps", icon packs and themes but still, this is a very impressive number for the much loved OS. ) |

On sale later this month – albeit in “limited quantities” – the G2 is roughly based on the Desire, with a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen and 5-megapixel camera. However it uses an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7230 chipset with HSPA+ support for high-speed connectivity.
There’s also a QWERTY keyboard with an unusual hinge design, a number of dedicated Google app shortcuts, and an unskinned copy of Android 2.2 Froyo. That includes Flash support and Voice Actions. Internal storage is 4GB, paired with an 8GB microSD card in the box. The T-Mobile G2 will be available later in September, price tba. The G2 breaks new ground as the first smartphone specifically designed for T-Mobile's new HSPA+ network2, which covers 100 million Americans in more than 55 major metropolitan areas across the country. The G2 is an ultra-powerful smartphone designed by HTC and is the highly anticipated successor to the "T-Mobile ignited the spark that set the Android world ablaze two years ago with the launch of the world's first Android-powered mobile phone, the T-Mobile G1, which remains an important milestone for both T-Mobile and the Android operating system," said Cole Brodman, chief technology and innovation officer, T-Mobile USA. "Now, with the launch of the T-Mobile G2, we are re-teaming with our partners at Google and HTC to provide T-Mobile customers with another first — the first Android smartphone designed to deliver 4G speeds on our new network." "One of the advantages of an open platform is the opportunity for developers to create rich mobile experiences and seamlessly get those experiences into the hands of consumers," said Andy Rubin, vice president, engineering, Google. "From new services, such as Voice Actions, to mobile applications, developer-led Android innovation is flourishing. On Android Market alone, the number of applications available to consumers has grown from just 50 applications two years ago to more than 80,000 applications today." "Two years ago, HTC and T-Mobile worked together to deliver the world's first Android phone, the T-Mobile G1. From that start, Android has grown to be the leading smartphone platform in the U.S., and one of the most popular globally," said Peter Chou, chief executive officer, HTC Corporation. "With today's announcement of the G2, HTC and T-Mobile are once again bringing a breakthrough Android product to market." The first smartphone specifically designed to deliver 4G speeds on T-Mobile's new HSPA+ network, the G2 is optimized for performance to provide customers with blazing fast access to a world of information through websites, applications, videos, file downloads and more. Built on Android 2.2, the G2 offers seven customizable home screen panels, including a dedicated panel with one-click access to your favorite Google applications such as Android Market™, which currently offers more than 80,000 applications. It is one of the first smartphones in the industry to offer the new Voice Actions feature of Google Search™, which allows you to control your phone with your voice for calling contacts and businesses, sending messages, browsing the Web, listening to music and completing common tasks. It is also the first smartphone to offer integrated access to Google Voice™, allowing customers to create a new account using their current mobile number right from the home screen. Google Voice then automatically transcribes voicemails to text so customers can read them like an e-mail or text message from their phone or online. Additional pre-loaded Google services include Google Search, Gmail™, Google Maps™ with Places and Navigation, YouTube™, Google Talk™ and Google Earth™, among others. Adding fuel to the G2's speed is its Snapdragon™ MSM7230 mobile processor which combines Qualcomm's new HSPA+ capabilities and second generation applications processor. The Snapdragon MSM7230 offers an 800 MHz CPU and is optimized to deliver exceptional performance, long battery life and leading edge multimedia and web browsing — with download speeds faster than other solutions currently in the market. | Samsung Galaxy Tab gets pocket-tested; hits Carphone Warehouse in Nov 2010 Posted: 08 Sep 2010 03:28 PM PDT It wasn’t just different colored HTC‘s at The Carphone Warehouse’s event today; the retailer was also announcing Samsung Galaxy Tab availability, with the Froyo slate expected to drop in November 2010. Nobody could tell us any pricing information, but we did get a chance to try out the Galaxy Tab in our jeans pockets to see if it really was as portable as Samsung promised.
To our surprise, it fit neatly inside – though on the snug side, with a little sliver still showing at the top. If you’re a fan of skinny jeans then you probably won’t have much luck, but generally the Tab seems portable in either jeans or jacket. That’s more than you can say for the iPad! We also checked out the Android Community app on the Galaxy Tab, and – even blown up to fit the 1024 x 600 display – it looks good. Interestingly, another app we tried wasn’t zoomed to fit, so it seems there’s something developer-related which is controlling whether the Samsung slate can resize them. Thanks to Richard for “modelling” the Tab! ) |
| White HTC Desire and silver HTC Wildfire special editions hands-on Posted: 08 Sep 2010 03:18 PM PDT Bored of the brown or black HTC Desire or the varied hues available for the HTC Wildfire? We caught up with UK retailer The Carphone Warehouse today, and they let us in on the fact that HTC has prepped two special editions just for them.
Coming to shelves in time for the holiday season are a new, white HTC Desire and a silver HTC Wildfire. The HTC rep we spoke to said this was something of a departure for the company – usually they just prepare an initial range of colors and that’s it – but certainly we’re glad they did. The white Desire is particularly appealing, and in the absence of a white iPhone 4 we reckon there’ll be plenty of smartphone buyers keen to cross over to Android from iOS. No word on specific availability, but the new models will be the same prices as their regular counterparts: usually from free with a new agreement. ) |

QuickPay has now brought the ROAMpay to Android along with it's app.
Along with allowing the ability to swipe credit cards to your device, it also seems to act as a virtual cash register as well, letting you log cash transactions (complete with receipts) as well as offering real-time authorization for major credit cards. The device is also available for iOS and Blackberry and is shipping now. Below is a demo of the ROAMpay system working on an iPhone. Click here to view the embedded video. [Via Engadget] ) |

| HP’s Zeen C510 Android tablet spotted Posted: 08 Sep 2010 02:20 PM PDT A few pictures of HP's seven-inch Zeen Android tablet have surfaced on the internet. It appears that the stock Android homescreen has been removed in favor of the TouchSmart UI. A few features such as the Gmail app are missing, although there is a custom email client that has integration with Yahoo, MSN, and Messenger.
This is clearly close to the final build of the device and it's software. Most of the apps are in place and running which is good considering that it should be released later this month. It seems the solo SKU has been canceled, and only the $399 bundle with the Zeus printer will be available. But both the previously-bad touchscreen and the software has seen much improvement so this will be a welcome update for anyone looking to buy a HP Android tablet. [Via Engadget] ) |
| Samsung Galaxy S now Pink in South Korea Posted: 08 Sep 2010 02:12 PM PDT With Samsung's Galaxy S available on almost all carriers it only makes sense for them to start bringing a bit of diversity to the fabled handset. That is exactly what they are doing in South Korea where they appear to now be offering this device in pink alongside the original.
No word as of yet if pink, or any other color options will be coming to other countries. We can only hope for a little variety stateside as well as the other markets where this widely distributed device is available. [Via Android Central] ) |

The devices will all be a part of the company's Optimus series of devices. The phones are expected to use the Tegra 2 smartphone chipset which offer a number of improvements in mobile devices.
