| Acer’s Liquid Metal Handset is Real, Features Froyo and Launching at End of October Posted: 13 Sep 2010 11:03 AM PDT Despite the fact that the Samsung Fascinate for Verizon launched with Android 2.1, there’s still some hope that the “new” devices still to launch for carriers around the world will all feature the latest version of Android, better known as Froyo. Luckily, Acer’s Liquid Metal handset will indeed launch with Android 2.2, and it should be hitting retail shelves by the end of October. In the UK.
Engadget’s confirmed that the handset will be making the rounds in the United Kingdom come the end of October. There’s no word on whether or not the handset will show up anywhere else in the world, but we can probably all safely assume that it will. As for the fun part, those rumored specifications include: Qualcomm’s MSM7230 800MHz processor under the hood (the same one found in the T-Mobile G2, actually), and a 3.6-inch (touchscreen?) display. It features an 800 x 480 resolution. There will also be Bluetooth 3.0, too. And yes, that’s brushed aluminum. As soon as more details emerge, we’ll pass them along. [via Engadget] ) |

| T-Mobile G2 coming to Radio Shack for $149.99 Posted: 13 Sep 2010 08:29 AM PDT This past weekend Radio Shack has posted on their Twitter that they will start offering the T-Mobile G2 for $149.99, $50 less than retail. The G2 is the much anticipated successor to the G1, the first official Android device which shipped all way the back in 2008, and is the first phone in the United States to include HSPA+. ![]()
The G2 ships with a 5-megapixel camera, 3.7 inch WVGA touchscreen, full QWERTY keyboard, Google shortcut keys, and an unskinned copy of Android 2.2 Froyo. Internal storage is 4GB and comes with an 8GB microSD card. Many have been waiting for this phone and with it's now even cheaper launch price it is looking to be a very attractive upgrade for any Android user on T-Mobile. T-Mobile's HSPA+ network has potential download speeds of 21 mbps and upload of 5.7 mbps with typical actual speeds in the 7 to 11 mbps range. This is much faster than Sprints highly advertised 4G network and we will be able to get a feel for it's actual speed when the device released in early October. [Via RadioShack] ) |
| Android 2.x user base jumps to over 70% this month Posted: 13 Sep 2010 08:09 AM PDT Every two weeks, Google posts a snapshot of the current Android OS fragmentation. With just posting their results we can now see that Android 2.1+ is holding 70% of the market. Even more interesting is that Android 2.2 Froyo has jumped from just 3.3% just a month ago to a now staggering 28.7%. This swift leap forward is mainly due to the amount of handsets that have been updated to 2.2 in the last month including the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Incredible, and the HTC EVO 4G. Verizon and sprit have been pushing out the 2.2 handsets for their newer devices while, as we all know, Motorola is not doing such a great job of keeping up.
Next month we will see these already impressive numbers grow even more with many very popular devices being released such as the Samsung Galaxy S (Captivate, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Vibrant) already selling over one million devices. Plus Motorola Droid X users should be getting the official 2.2 jump soon, if you already haven't gotten your hands on the download. [Via InformationWeek] ) |
| Get Google Search on your Verizon Fascinate before 2.2 (without root) Posted: 13 Sep 2010 07:51 AM PDT Since the announcement of Bing on some of Verizon's handsets many people want Google search back on their Android phones. Now that is possible on the newly released Fascinate with just a third-party launcher and a single download. This does not require root and brings native Google search and voice search back to the homescreen.
To download:
It is as simple as that, Google will now be your search engine on your homescreen without any serious OS tweaking. Note: Although the search button will remain to open Bing officially, you can also get the dedicated search button on the device to work with Google, however, this does require a root. To do this:
