Motorola Android Powered Tablet coming early 2011?

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 09:41 AM PDT

Yesterday, during the Deutsche Bank Technology conference, Sanjay Jha – Motorola's co-CEO, stated that he hopes Motorola can develop a compelling Android tablet by early 2011. He has recently been counting on Android running smartphones to help the company's declining profits and expects the OS to be their main ticket out of trouble.

However, with more and more of their phones running the Android OS being released each year, Jha thinks it is time they start to focus on the new frontier- tablet PC's – now that the current generation of software is up to par with a tablet device.

“I will only develop a tablet if it is sufficiently compelling,” Jha said during the on-stage chat.

When asked if he thinks the tablet market will cut into Motorola's device sales he stated, "I see the tablet market as an opportunity; not cannibalization with smartphones, iPad is more an extension of iPhone than a migration of a Macintosh. I think that is a natural expansion for us.”

Only time will tell and if Motorola does in fact develop a compelling tablet device we will be sure to hear about it before it's official release with details to come.

*Spark Android homescreen app takes on Sense & MOTOBLUR [Video]

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 05:44 AM PDT

Android homescreens can end up pretty personal places to swipe around, as users build up their preferred layout of widgets and shortcuts, but now Hiplogic wants to make things even more unique.  Their new *Spark homescreen system borrows some of HTC Sense, MOTOBLUR and other Android UIs, pulling in weather, social networking sites and news into a single, geo-aware place.

There’s Facebook and Twitter integration, together with headlines and automatically-updated weather forecasts.  Right now it doesn’t look hugely different from the carrier-loaded UIs we’ve seen, but Hiplogic reckon they’ve got more content partnerships and functionality in the pipeline that might just brighten things up for *Spark users.  Apparently that includes Astrology.com, CBS, Disney, EA, ET, Sky and others.

The main benefit, of course, could be that by keeping your UI separate from the underlying Android OS, you’re likely to get quicker platform updates rather than face delays as manufacturers tweak their systems to suit each new ROM.

"*Spark will save users a lot of the time they're currently wasting launching separate weather, news, browser, messaging, and social network apps every time they want to check their friend's most recent posts, tweet a status update, or access current news, sports and weather, entertainment, and other information. Just imagine how much time having all of your most important information and friends' social updates on your Home screen would save you in a single day," says Matt Marshall, executive producer of DEMO. "And HipLogic's plan to add new *Spark modules monthly makes the future of this new mobile social broadcasting & live information aggregation tool even more enticing."

*Spark delivers the following benefits to consumers:

· Cleans up your Home screen, removing app clutter and enabling quick scrolling and personalization plus easy access to phone and browsing functions.

· Provides a simple, elegant, and social mobile user experience (combines all a user's essential social information on one Home screen.

· Brings live Home screen "push" notifications to all phones (i.e. specified information and updates find you rather than you searching for it).

· Proactively delivers live news, sports, entertainment & other targeted content to the phonetop through free modules (app-like widgets that deliver specific content).

· Enables cross-posting to Facebook, Twitter, and SMS – update status / news / events / etc. across the three communication channels with a single click.

The *Spark beta is available for free download via Android Market, Nokia's Ovi Store, plus operator and 3rd party app stores.

Unreal Engine May be coming to Android Soon

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 01:18 PM PDT

Many previously iOS only games such as Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja, on top of previously iOS only OpenFeint have made their way to Android this week. It only makes sense that the Unreal Engine would be ported to the ever growing, always popular Android OS soon as well. Ever since GDC 2010 when the engine was announced to be coming to iOS there has been speculation if and when it would be coming to Android.

The Unreal Engine has been demoed many times running on Android, but Epic Vice President Mark Rein has not yet made things official. Even though we know it's coming, we just do not know when, as iOS is currently their priority.

If you are unfamiliar with the Unreal Engine check out the video below of Epic Citadel. It’s a graphical example of the results we get with the Unreal Engine, in this case running on the iPad.

Press Release

"Mountain View, California – September 14, 2010 – Android users want the best of the Internet, which means all their favorite websites and videos. This is why now over one million consumers have downloaded mobile browser Skyfire that optimizes Flash video content and brings it to Android devices worldwide. Today Skyfire announces that it has become one of the most popular Android apps, placing it in the top .02 percent of all products in the Android Marketplace.

Additionally the company announces expanded availability to newer Android devices.  Now the browser works on popular Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy, Samsung Epic, Motorola Droid X and Droid 2, HTC Incredible and EVO 4G. Skyfire works alongside the latest Android 2.2 update to ensure Flash video is always just a click away, regardless of network connectivity. For those with devices that do not have the Android 2.2 update (2.1 and below), Skyfire opens the door to millions of previously inaccessible Flash videos.

Skyfire for Android took mobile browsing to a new level with the addition of the SkyBar™, a cloud-enabled toolbar that lets users enjoy millions of videos previously unavailable on mobile, discover the latest buzz on any topic they browse, and easily share content to their social networks. The company has since released several updates that make the browser faster, smarter and data optimized.

Skyfire's advanced cloud computing technology not only enables the features above, but also reduces mobile video data consumption by an average of 75 percent. According to a recent Cisco study, mobile video streaming is expected to increase by over 6000 percent by 2012. As consumers gain an optimized video streaming experience on mobile with Skyfire, mobile carriers are presented an opportunity to offload the impending mobile video data burden causing dropped calls and poor reception and clogged bandwith in major metropolitan areas."

Android continuing to surge in Cellphone OS Market share, others decline

Posted: 15 Sep 2010 12:45 PM PDT

Android is continuing to grow in the cellphone OS market, now passing Microsoft. In the three month period ending in July, research company comScore Inc. has documented the market percentages in the cellphone OS market. With all of the phone releases in the past few months on top of the openness of the Android platform it is not shocking that Android is gaining market share. However, the rate of which it's occurring is very impressive and the future is looking bright for the famed Google OS.

In the three months that were reported, Google had jumped from 12% to just over 17% taking some market share from RIM and Apple. In fact, Apple had dropped a percent point from 25%, RIM dropped 2 percentage points from 41% and Microsoft lost 2% of the market. Clearly Google is on it's way to becoming the most popular operating mobile operating system with the numbers now, almost 2 months later, probably even more impressive.

ComScore also reported Samsung Electronics kept it's top place as the world's top mobile device manufacturer gaining a full percentage point (23.1% from 22.1) while it's competitors LG and Motorola saw their share decline. With Samsung’s constant new array of Android phones and tablets being released each month this will only further help Android grow to an even larger user base.
