| AT&T 4G LTE network expected to launch by Mid-2011 Posted: 17 Sep 2010 08:27 AM PDT 4G networks are the new craze among mobile device enthusiasts. Offering lightning fast speeds, they are clearly the next frontier in the mobile market. While other carriers have their own 4G networks, AT&T is going to be joining them in 2011 with an expected potential of reaching 70-75 million people by the end of 2011. ![]()
AT&T has said it wanted to wait for the LTE market to mature before moving forward with a full-scale deployment. Stankey said AT&T is working on a different kind of implementation for LTE than other carriers, and needs to carry forward its UMTS services to ensure that voice and data services can work simultaneously on both UMTS and LTE. The company is spending $700 million in capital expenditures on LTE this year and “will go far beyond that” in 2011, Stankey said. AT&T is even going as far as already looking beyond HSPA 7.2 and pushing forward with HSPA+ on it's way to a 4G network. HSPA+ will offer real world speeds of 7 Mbps, which is noticeably faster than the real-world speeds offered under the HSPA standard. [Via IntoMobile] ) |

| Samsung Event Wrap-up, Galaxy Tab Hands on Video and Accessories Posted: 16 Sep 2010 09:34 PM PDT The Samsung event today answered a lot of questions we have been wondering for a while now. What carriers will the Tab be released on? – all. Will there be a WiFi only model? – yes, details soon. And finally which accessories will be available alongside release later this year? While still some questions remain, price and availability, we still have enough to keep us excited until it’s launch in the coming months.
Accessories include the $99.99 keyboard dock, similar to that available for iPad users. The dock itself provides a full QWERTY keyboard, Charge/Sync dock and stereo audio output. The next up is the desktop dock. This dock allows you to connect to a TV via HDMI. Video out support allows up to 1080p playback, picture viewing and listening to music on your HDTV. And finally, there is the car dock. It's available for $99.99 and allows for GPS turn-by-turn directions to your Galaxy Tab. We have got our hands on the device and from what we saw at the event the device is pretty solid and the software is very responsive and snappy. Check out the hands on video below. | Full Flash 10.1 on Samsung Galaxy Tab Posted: 16 Sep 2010 05:04 PM PDT Let's face it Flash is everywhere. If you have been looking for a tablet that features full flash then it looks like the fully versatile Samsung Galaxy Tab will be a great option. Announced at their press conference just a few minutes ago, the Tab will feature full flash 10.1 when it ships in a few months. ![]()
Now flash on Android devices has been around for sometime, however the experience hasn't been optimal since it is very hardware dependent. But with the Tab's 1GHz Hummingbird processor, Flash should be expected to run great which means a lot more content is available at your fingertips. You can check out a video demo of Flash in action on the Tab in the video below. More from Samsung's event as well as a hands-on is coming soon. [Via Slashgear] ) |

| Skyhook suing Google for Patent Infringement Posted: 16 Sep 2010 02:24 PM PDT Skyhook, a company in the business of location based services, is suing Google over patent infringement for their triangulation services as well as forcing handset manufacturers to use Google's services in favor of Skyhook. The lawsuit was filed in State court and details that Google's Android platform made it impossible for them to conduct business on the devices, despite the "open" nature of the OS. ![]()
Google's own location based services are free, the argument that Skyhook is offering is that their own services are better, which makes them the best choice for handset manufacturers. The claim regarding Motorola states that Google took advantage of it's relationship with Motorola, and other manufacturers, ultimately having them block Skyhook before the devices could be approved. Google has yet to respond. [Via GIGAom] ) |
| Electronic Arts stepping into the Android gaming scene Posted: 16 Sep 2010 01:59 PM PDT Another piece of Android news has come out of The Deutsche Bank Tech Conference. The first being Motorola's plans for a Droid 2011 tablet release, the second is from yet another gaming company starting to develop on the Android Platform. Electronic Arts, popular for their console, mobile and iOS games, is currently planning on stepping into the next big market, Android. ![]()
EA's new CFO, Eric Brown, stated that they see Android as the next big thing for mobile gaming and are currently preparing to step into the market: "So I think there's a lot to happen in the future in Android, and we're trying to position our mobile business to take advantage of that trend." He also goes on to state that the current Android Market needs some changes in order to compete with's Apples App Store but they can definitely see that happening. "I think the next big positive wave to push better growth in mobile will be the deployment of an App Store equivalent for the Android operating system," Brown said at a Q&A as part of the Deutsche Bank 2010 Technology Conference. "We think long term … the Android market is going to take its share." This marks another company shifting resources to the Android platform. With OpenFeint, and the potential Unreal Engine, the Android Platform is going to become a huge competitor in the mobile device gaming market. [Via Gamasutra] ) |
