Amazon's very popular Kindle App for Android has received an update. Bringing many new and much requested features, the Kindle is proving to maintain it's position as the most popular eReader app on the Market.

These new features include full text search, the ability to add notes and highlights and have them synchronized with other devices, voice search, Wikipedia lookup and more. Detailed below these are all much needed updates and they each make reading more robust and navigation throughout your collections even easier.

New Kindle for Android features include:

  • Search within the book:  Customers can either type or speak a word or phrase to search within a book.
  • Add, Edit and Delete Notes and Highlights: Kindle for Android is the only reading app for Android-based devices that allows readers to add notes and highlights to books, and have them automatically synchronized between devices.
Wikipedia Lookup:  Look up words and phrases in Wikipedia simply by selecting text.
  • Shelfari Book Details:  For the first time, customers can view additional book details from the books-focused social networking site Shelfari.  Readers will find a description of the book, synopsis, summary, cast of characters, and many more features, and be able to view real-time discussions that the Shelfari community is having about the book.
  • Orientation Lock: Choose to lock the orientation of their screen in landscape or portrait mode to allow for comfortable reading in any position.

With the new voice and text search features you can easily find the section of a box you have been longing to read or check in on. It seems very impressive so far and is very quick and an overall very useful tool for the already popular application.

Kindle for Android is available in the Android Market, and the update is available today.

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 02:51 AM PDT

Sony Ericsson has confirmed that the Android 2.1 update for the XPERIA X10 – which it had previously promised would be released sometime this month – has been delayed, and is now not expected to arrive until the end of October.  The company claims to “have had to spend some additional time on the software to really makes sure we roll-out with the right quality and user experience,” and will not only be upgrading the X10 but the smaller X10 mini and X10 mini pro.

The news comes as a blow to XPERIA users, whose phone was released with 1.6 at a time when rival handsets were already using Android 2.0 firmware.  Meanwhile Sony Ericsson are warning that the roll-out will be phased, so it may take several weeks after the initial release before every device gets a bite of the Eclair.

Xperia X10:

  • HD video recording with continuous auto-focus for high quality videos
  • Upgrade of the Android platform to Android 2.1
  • New back up and restore application, with extended content back up
  • 5 homescreens for apps, widgets, shortcuts and folders

  • New backup and restore application with extended content back up
  • Automatic synchronization of your contact pictures between Facebook and your phone book

7-Inch Dell Android based Tablet hinted at, Is this the Looking Glass?

    Posted: 22 Sep 2010 04:50 PM PDT

Michael Dell, chief executive officer of Dell Inc. has gone and pulled another tablet out of his pocket. This looks to be the rumored Looking Glass which specs leaked long ago with an expected release date of November. The tablet is still expected to run Android 2.1 but not much other details were provided by Dell.

The "Looking Glass" is the 7-inch big brother to the Dell Streak. It's boasting a Tegra 2 processor, seven-inch 800×480 display, 1.3 megapixel camera, 4GB of flash for storage and an SDHC slot for up to 32GB of expansion. It's interesting that it's resolution is identical to the Streak 5 regardless of it's larger size.

It is also worth noting that he went on to mention the Dell Streak to be available in Best Buy locations "soon." Other than the expected release we have no further details on the Streak or the Looking Glass.

Epic 4G upload speed fix is almost here

    Posted: 22 Sep 2010 04:35 PM PDT

If you are an owner of an Epic 4G, chances are you know how frustrating the upload speeds on the device can be. We already know that it is not the speedy Sprint network or the devices impressive hardware, it is a software problem that the device shipped with. The wait seems to be just about over as Sprint and Samsung are prepping the update as we speak and it will
be present in the next maintenance release.

The official word from Sprint reads:

“We have heard reports of users experiencing less-than-expected 3G upload speeds with their Samsung Epic 4G. After extensive investigation, Sprint and Samsung have identified an enhancement that may improve upload speeds on the Epic. This fix will be made available in the next maintenance release. It's important to note that network speeds are impacted by many factors when using commercially-available speed test applications and test results may or may not be true indicator of the actual network performance.”

This update will bring much improvement of 3G upload speeds. Devices now currently are topping out around 150kbps, which is far less that impressive. More info to come as the update becomes available.
