AT&T’s Motorola Flipout appears on eBay

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 10:33 AM PDT

The interesting phone known as the Flipout, known for it's crazy design that is a swivel square, has just hit eBay. The device's price is $388.88 and includes packaging, the AT&T branding, and all the other necessities. There are currently 3 available and interestingly the price on eBay is most likely lower than the off contract price from AT&T themselves (when they release announce that the device is coming in the first place).

The device is running Android 2.1 and sporting MOTOBLUR. The specs sheet, for those interested is below, along with more pictures from the listing.

Nexus One gets Froyo 2.2.1 Update, Available to install now manually

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 08:21 AM PDT

Joining nearly every other Android device with an update this week is Google's own flagship device, the Nexus One. No word yet on exactly what this addresses, fixes, blocks or prevents, but we are almost certain this will break root.

Update instructions are as follows:

  • Download the Android 2.2.1 firmware for the Nexus One Here
  • Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]

  • Power down your Nexus One

  • Hold down the "Volume Down" button as you power the phone back on.

  • A screen should appear showing your phone's system searching for various files. Scroll down to "recovery" and press the "Power" button.

  • When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the "Power" and "Volume Up" buttons at the same time.

  • From the menu that appears, select "Apply sdcard:update.zip."

  • When the screen displays "Install from sdcard complete" select "reboot system now" and wait for the phone to power back up. (this will take a long time)

There have been some minor bugs so far with this update. Swype was reporting an issue while not working, Swiftkey wasn't predicting words, and other 3rd party keyboards have been having functionality issues. This update currently is brand new and we will bring you updates on exactly what was fixed when we find out.

Verizon to offer tiered data plans in 4-6 months

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 08:07 AM PDT

Verizon, following suit of many other mobile service providers, plan on releasing tiered data plans within the next 4-6 months. Not many other details have been said regarding pricing and the tiers offered but, Ivan Seidenberg the CEO of Verizon, took a quick shot at AT&T and how they handle tiered data.

He went on the claim that Verizon doesn't necessarily "agree" with how AT&T values their data. This can mean a lot of things, most likely Verizon offering more data for the same amount as AT&T or maybe a cheaper structure all around offering much more data.

It is expected to be announced and launched about the same time as their LTE 4G network is launched. He also went as far to talk about the iPhone on the carrier, apparently they need to "earn it." So, is a fully featured fast 4G network with competitive data plans "earning it" we may soon find out.

T-Mobile G2 preorder begins for existing subscribers

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 12:34 AM PDT

One of the T-Mobile USA faithful and keen to get your hands on the carrier’s new T-Mobile G2?  The good news is that, as expected, the HTC-made smartphone has gone up for preorder for existing T-Mobile customers.

$199.99 gets you the G2 – or at least an order form showing that you’ve paid for one – and delivery is expected to take place by October 6th, the same day that the Android smartphone goes on sale generally.  Of course, you could get it a little earlier (we’re hearing talk that T-Mobile are targeting the end of September for the start of customer deliveries) giving you a week or so of preening in front of your jealous (or simply uninterested) friends.

Samsung Galaxy Tab official demo video released

Posted: 24 Sep 2010 12:27 AM PDT

We’ve spent no small amount of time shooting video of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, but it seems the South Korean company themselves wanted to get in on the action too.  A new demo video has been released – claiming to “objectively present” the 7-inch Froyo slate’s capabilities – that runs through the key functionality without resorting to the type of hyperbole you might expect from a certain fruit-themed manufacturer.

That includes the Keyboard Dock in action, the custom email and calendar apps Samsung has produced for the Galaxy Tab, and Flash playback in the browser.  There’s also some time spent on wireless HD streaming, too.  Still no pricing or specific release dates, but we’re getting pretty excited about this 3G tablet.

R2-D2 Droid Dummy Units arrive at Verizon Wireless Stores

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 07:01 PM PDT

The R2-D2 Droid 2 has been hitting Verizon Wireless Stores recently. Although they are just dummy units and not actually working, it is clear the release is getting very, very close to actually happening.

For all you fans, this may be just the device you have been longing for to show your extreme love for the popular pop culture icon that is Star Wars. However, you should know that even though the this is a brand new phone, it does not have the internals of the upcoming Droid 2 World Edition. But of course, for a hardcore Star Wars fan, a R2-D2 themed device is far greater than the ability to use it world wide.

Pricing is currently unknown on the device. And with all of the Star Wars extras preloaded and it's unique skin, it is very unlikely that it will be boasting the same $199.99 price tag as it's counterpart the Droid 2.

Dell’s Looking Glass, Additional Pictures and a Video

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 06:14 PM PDT

Yesterday we saw a picture of Dell's new tablet, not much information was announced of the device and we only caught one photo of the actual device. Well today it looks as if the people of Oracle have released the tape the presentation by Michael Dell as well as a few close-up shots of the device.

From the photos and video we can see some of the external hardware. We see the volume rocker, which is located on the top of the tablet, a headphone jack on the left side, and an unknown switch on the right side of the device (possibly an orientation lock or much switch similar to the iPad).

Check out the gallery below for more shots from the event.

10-inch Galaxy Tab Coming early 2011

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 05:50 PM PDT

We all knew that Samsung had plans to further enter the tablet market with new Galaxy S devices. We now have official word from Samsung Mobile Ireland's manager Gary Twohig. The details are scarce and although we didn't get a price point, we did get a confirmation that the device is preparing to be released in the first half of 2011.

The 10-inch Galaxy Tab will be running Android (3.0 is likely) and will be a more natural, direct competitor to the Apple iPad. We also got word back at IFA that there are additional, smaller Galaxy Tab devices in the works. These new devices will fill the gap between the Galaxy lineup of phones and the almost ready for release 7-inch tablet.

It's also interesting to note that the devices will be differentiated from each other and will each focus on one or a few areas of interest. For example, some devices may focus on media consumption while other can focus on creation and include a higher resolution camera and video/photo editing software.

T-Mobile G2 open for pre-orders tomorrow, available October 6th

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:54 PM PDT

According to a screenshot of the internal product page for the G2, it appears as if it will be ready to pre-order starting tomorrow, with shipment and availability beginning on October 6th. The pre-order process, available only to existing customers for now, will run until the 4th of October.

T-Mobile employees may also pre-order the much hyped device starting tonight at midnight, however, no word yet on how many will be initially available.

The internal site reads:

From September 24 through October 4, existing T-Mobile customers will be given the exclusive opportunity to pre-order the T-Mobile G2 with Google at select T-Mobile retail stores, through Care upgrades, and online at http://G2.t-mobile.com. A limited number of G2 smartphones will also be available for employees to pre-order on My T-Mobile.

The G2 is scheduled to be available to all customers at select T-Mobile retail stores, Care upgrades, select retail partner locations and online on October 6.

The G2 is the successor to the insanely popular first Android phone the G1. Bringing features such as HSPA+, 5-megapixel camera, Android 2.2, Qualcomm MSM 7230 clocked at 800 MHz, GPS, and Bluetooth, the G2 already seems to be a very powerful upgrade.

Shazam coming preloaded on all LG Android Phones

Posted: 23 Sep 2010 03:38 PM PDT

Shazam, the music identification application, and arguably the most accurate and popular among mobile devices, is coming preloaded on future LG phones. The first phone shipping with Shazam will be the LG Optimus GT540, this marks the first of the many after the signed deal between Shazam and LG.

If you are not familiar with Shazam, it allows you to use your phones microphone to take a sampling of a song and then give you the songs information, with links to purchase or post to Twitter and FaceBook. There are some alternatives but so far it looks like Shazam is the most refined and polished.

Unfortunately, only the free version is coming preloaded on the devices so you will still have to pay the $4.70 if you want all of the features that pro version comes with.
Shazam Encore can be downloaded here.
