MIUI Android ROM overhauls UI with iPhone/TouchWiz/Sense inspiration [Video]

Posted: 28 Sep 2010 03:15 AM PDT

Take a pinch of iPhone, a dash of Sense, a sprinkling of TouchWiz and mix it all up in Android, and you might get the MIUI ROM.  Currently wowing with its combination of slick icons, straightforward multitasking and general visual niceness, the new ROM completely overhauls the UI.

More information at xda-developers together with download links, and the Android Community guys are already talking about MIUI here.  Anybody tempted?

Paid Android App Support Coming to 15 new countries

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 09:33 PM PDT

At the end of last week, Google sent out word to developers that paid Android app support will soon be available in more countries "over the next few weeks." Strangely other than that, we did not get much information from Google. It took the app store analytics company Distimo to give us some real information regarding what countries are currently popping up with paid app support.

So far Distimo has identified 12 of these new countries they are as follows:

Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Singapore, Sweden and South Africa

Coming from Google's already 14 country presence, another 15 would be more than doubling the amount of supported countries, opening up a lot more potential for marketshare.

Google's email is as follows:

    “Hello,

We're writing to inform you about some changes to Android Market that require your attention.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be adding paid apps support for additional countries. If you have selected to publish your paid apps to all locations and intend to support all new locations as we expand the number of supported countries for paid apps, you don't have to do anything. If you have selected to publish your paid apps to all locations but intend to only target the currently supported 14 countries, please update your location selections to target these specific countries.

Please look for follow-up emails when we introduce paid apps support for specific additional countries in the coming weeks. At that time, you'll have the option to target these specific countries.

Thanks, and we look forward to continue working with you on Android
Market.

    Sincerely,
The Android Market Team

Amazon also considering it’s own Android App Store

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 09:13 PM PDT

Similar to Verizon's bold move it looks as it Amazon may be considering to launch it's on App store on Android devices. To compete with Google's own, and Verizon's VCAST app store the Amazon app store will offer some perks to developers as well. The online retailer will allegedly pay a royalty "equal to the greater of 70 percent of the purchase price or 20 percent of the List Price." This "List Price" is said to help protect Amazon against the developers offering their apps for cheaper on the other markets.

To participate in developing apps for the Amazing Market developers are expected to pay a $99 fee. Apps must be updated simultaneously on the Amazon portal along with the other distribution channels. An interesting note here is that Amazon is reserving the right to set the retail prices of some apps, as well planning to also feature some titles directly on Amazon.com.

No official word yet on when, or if this will all take place. But if rumors are true, we will definitely not only see the application business to become more competitive but the application's market to become equally competitive as well.

Galaxy Tab A La Carte Pricing Revealed? Don’t be too excited…

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 08:55 PM PDT

We know the Galaxy Tab is looking to be a very impressive device. From the screen size, to the functionality, to it running our favorite mobile OS, it's an all around amazing device. Well it seems that AT&T has begun training it's employees to ready them for sale of the tablet. Word is that the à la carte data pricing structure has been released as well, let's just say they are far, far, from impressive.

The source goes on to claim that, like the iPad, you can buy a non-contract data plan for your device. Now back when the iPad 3G launched users simply paid $29.99 for unlimited data, however, this came to an end and now users pay $25 for 2GB. With Apple's strong ties with AT&T we knew that they had to pull some strings to get these amazingly low prices, but if these prices we see here are correct, Samsung must not have even tried.

The supposed break down is as follows:

  • $15/100mb for 1 day
  • $30/300mb for 7 days
  • $50/1gb for 30 days

These seem, very, very high. So high that some people who want a tablet for media consumption may just result to the iPad and save $70 a month on a 2GB plan. That adds up over time and just from the money you would have saved you could buy a Galaxy Tab.

We sure hope these aren't final and will let you know, as always, of any updates.

Motorola Defy Gets Durability tested on Video

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 06:49 PM PDT

Two weeks ago Motorola announced it's upcoming ultra durable phone, the Defy. The device is advertised as "designed to handle everything that life throws your way" and is looking very durable, but how durable is it really? Well the fine folks over at Expansys decided to give it a few tests to see if it could handle what they threw it's way, the result: it did.

Now if you have ever handled a fragile mobile phone, e.g. the iPhone 4, you know just how careful you need to be with expensive handheld devices. It's nice to know that this phone can actually take a beating.

Although the drop in the video wasn't very high, most phones would have survived, but it's nice to know that if you do eventually slip up your Defy can hold up to your beating, even if that means dropping it in some water.

Check out the video below which features the durability tests as well as a brief software walkthrough:

T-Mobile G2 not shipping with tethering support and WiFi Hotspot

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 06:15 PM PDT

It looks like the T-Mobile G2, that was available for Pre-Order last week, and is shipping soon, will not be supporting tethering at launch. Many of us know that stock Android 2.2 does in fact support tethering right off the bat. However, 2.2 on the G2 will not due to T-Mobile simply not supporting it as of this time.

T-Mobile has been questioned on the lack of the service on the G2, and they responded:

"T-Mobile does not currently support handset tethering or offer a tethering rate plan. Though tethering and Wi-Fi sharing will not be initially supported on the T-Mobile G2, we know that consumers are interested in these features and we are working to develop a solution to support them in the future."

Although this isn't good news at all for people who tether quite often and are going to pick up the G2, it does give us hope that they are looking to develop a solution to support it in the future. We do not know as of yet the reasoning behind not offering the option, or the limitations that it may impose upon release, but we may find out when we get further into the devices lifecycle (if at all).

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 06:06 PM PDT

Did you know that the Droid 2 has an built in FM Radio like the Droid X? Well it was news to us when we stumbled across the XDA Developers forums as well. It appears that forum user slayher has found a way to unlock the use of the FM Radio by porting the Droid X Radio App to the Droid 2. Now although this requires root, for now, the official update may be coming soon.

Instructions to Activate FM Radio on Droid 2:

4G Setting Menu Found hidden in HTC Droid Incredible’s Software

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 05:12 PM PDT

We all know that Verizon is planning on launching their ultrafast 4G network starting later this year and into 2013. In fact, although we just got official word last week it looks like device manufacturers were already anticipating a 4G network and testing, or at least implementing the software needed to connect to it. The Droid Incredible's 4G settings menu, found below, was accessed via a simple Gesture Search (a Google app/search method).

Now just because the software is there, it does not mean the phone supports 4G, Verizon's future 4G, or has any firm meaning other than HTC was preparing it for future phones. However, if this somehow means HTC's Droid Incredible could utilize Verizon's 4G network that is launching, there will be a lot of happy campers come year's end.

Sharp announces 2 new Android Ereader tablets, named Galapagos

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 05:03 PM PDT

Sharp has officially announced 2 new eReader tablets that it has been working on. The 2 tablets, one "mobile" and one "home", short for small and big, are code named Galapagos. This is not only the bizarre name of the hardware but also Sharp's new eBook ecosystem. The home model is a 10.8-inch LCD with a resolution of 1366 x 800, while the mobile version is only 5.5 inches with a 1024 x 600 resolution display.

Video demonstration after the cut.

These 2 touchscreen devices are equipped with WiFi b/g but lacking 3G, although it may be coming later. The smaller model has an additional trackball to make scrolling easier and for more robust one handed use. The software on the 2 Android running devices includes a web browser, Office file viewer, and a reading focus social networking app. All of the device management will be done via the Sharp Galapagos Station PC application.

No word yet on pricing, but it is expected to arrive in Japan this December with a catalog of 30,000 magazines, newspapers and eBooks at launch.

HTC Merge for Verizon Poses for Photos, Showcases Full QWERTY Keyboard

Posted: 27 Sep 2010 02:40 PM PDT

The HTC Merge, model number ADR6325, was spotted in a Verizon Wireless inventory screenshot at the end of August, and now it seems the device has taken some time to pose for a photo shoot. Bearing the same look and feel as the HTC Lexikon, which leaked not too long ago, the Merge offers up the same global reach as the World Edition of the Droid 2, as it features a slot for a GSM SIM card.

Other features include that full, slide-out QWERTY keyboard. There’s also a 5MP camera on the back, and you’ll find the now-standard microSIM card slot for expandable memory. The device is running Android 2.2, and you’re going to find HTC’s Sense UI there, too. What you’ll also find, as is apparent from the screen shot above, is the usage of Bing yet again on an Android device. Check out the other images in the gallery, which show more angles of the HTC manufactured device.
