SoundFreaq Sound Platform: A Bluetooth wall of sound

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 05:53 PM PDT

Bluetooth-equipped iPod docks are still relatively rare, but they're dead handy if you've got several gadgets storing your digital song collection.

That's why we're taken with the SoundFreaq Sound Platform: a monsterous hulk of Hi-Fi tech, ready to gobble tunes from iPhone, iPod and iPhone wirelessly. Read on for a closer look.

Unveiled at IFA last night, the SoundFreaq Sound Platform is a Bluetooth equipped speaker dock with a handy iPad app too. Hook up your iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, or any mobile with A2DP stereo Bluetooth streaming and you're in business.

There's also an iPod dock up front, which makes plonking your Apple jukebox down for a tune 'n' charge session a jiffy.

As you'd expect, the SoundFreaq Sound Platform is designed with audio quality as well as convenience in mind, with custom woofers and tweeters. Take a look at the video below, and see the SoundFreaq Sound Platform in action.

Toshiba Folio 100: hands on photos of Tosh’s Android Tablet

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 09:55 AM PDT

Toshiba just whipped the covers off the Folio 100 Android tablet. Packed with Nvidia Tegra graphics chips, running Android 2.2 and boasting such niceties as an SD card slot, twin USB ports and HDMI output at full HD. Take that iPad!

The Toshiba Folio 100 also has a slightly bigger screen than Apple's tablet, and a 1.3 megapixel webcam and full Flash 10.1 support. We know what you're thinking and, yes, that means it should run Chatroulette just fine.

It'll be out in November for £329, with 16GB of storage built in. Next year, Toshiba tells us there'll be a "competitively priced" 3G model too.

Battery life is listed at 7 hours (65% web browsing, 10% video playback, 25% standby) and the whole shebang weighs in at 760g.

In use, it's surprisingly sprightly, despite the software being non-final. We fired up Electricpig's homepage and were surprised at the speed it rendered. We saw games in action too, suggesting this could be a true iPad battler, and flicking between menus was as smooth as stroking a buttered snake.

Toshiba also have a handful of Folio 100 accessories available, including a dock to connect the tablet to a TV with HDMI for video playback. It's grabbed our attention, and is currently vying for top spot in our IFA affections, along with the Samsung Galaxy Tab.

Out November | £329 | Toshiba

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 camera unboxed: photos

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 08:28 AM PDT

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 “compact” camera that was unveiled last month has just rocked up at our doorstep, complete with twin sensors on the front for taking shots in the extra dimension. A year on from Fujfilm’s first crack at this nascent market, is it still a gimmick? We’ll be bringing you a full Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 review soon, but in the meantime, enjoy the unboxing photos right here!

The Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 is quite a meal to pronounce (Perhaps even more so than the Sony Ercisson Xperia X10 Mini Pro), and it’s still quite a chunk to lug around as well, cramming in as it does two separate lenses and image sensors. At 230g, it’s got some serious bludgeonability, to coin a phrase.

Does it take good 3D shots? From what we’ve seen so far on the Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3’s 3.5-inch lenticular display, it appears to, with nice depth and colour. But the live view mode before you take a shot is absolutely horrific, with more grain than a cereal factory.

Still, we’ll save a full verdict for a full Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W3 review. Got any questions about it? Jot them down here and we’ll endeavour to answer them for you.

Out September | £399 | Fujifilm

LG Optimus September unveiling teased

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 07:36 AM PDT

Oh hello. Look at this LG Optimus invitation that just dropped into our inbox, with the outline of what would appear to be a tablet or smartphone of some form. Tuesday the 14th of September is the day the LG Optimus line , which we previously heard consists of phones and Android tablets, gets outed, at 10am UK time. Intriguingly, LG has also said the LG Optimus line will include devices with a “range of operating systems”. Whether that means Android plus Chrome OS, or Android plus Windows Phone 7, however, is anybody’s guess. We’ll be happy either way, and naturally, covering it all live, so won’t you join us?

Samsung C9000 TV launched: we want one

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 07:15 AM PDT

Samsung launched a whole range of other products today, and although most were overshadowed by the anticipation over the Samsung Galaxy Tab one that caught our eye for pure lust value is the Samsung C9000.

The Samsung C9000 is a smart, super slim TV, with a remote control that acts as a second small screen. That means you can carry the remote with you when you get up to make a brew, or want to channel hop while someone else carries on watching on the big screen. The remote provides a 3" display.

Check Out Our Most Recommended

The Samsung C9000 is just 7.98mm thick, which meant that we had a bit of trouble photographing it in a meaningful way. The super slim Samsung telly also has 2D to 3D conversion and two HD receivers, and supports DLNA for streaming from compatible devices. It has Allshare connectivity and is connected to Samsung's web content as well and web app store as well.

Sharp Quattron 3D: Hands on and first impressions

Posted: 02 Sep 2010 07:03 AM PDT

We've just clapped eyes on the first Sharp Quattron 3D screens at IFA. They're huge, colourful and frankly, eye-popping. Read on, see our photos, and find out how Quattron 3D could put an end to griping over added-dimension TV.

The science behind Sharp Quattron 3D is that the extra, yellow sub-pixel lets through more light, making for a brighter image that's harder to dim while wearing 3D glasses. But what's it like in practice?

In one word: astounding. We settled down in front of a Sharp Quattron 3D screen to watch a movie (or at least, a bit of one) and the experience was much closer to that we've experienced at the cinema. The brighter display makes a huge difference, and really sets Sharp's screens apart. What’s more, not everyone has to watch in 3D. Sharp’s clever glasses let some viewers watch in 3D, while others can choose 2D instead.

Yellows in particular burst from the screen, with Quattron’s extra sub-pixel doing the business. We watched a desert scene, and sands in the background faded gently into the distance. While watching the same scene on a (handily unbranded) competitor product, those details were simply too dark to see.

Safe to say we're impressed by Sharp Quattron 3D so far. Stay tuned for a full review nearer their release date in October.

Out October | £3,500 | Sharp
