Android Market Rolls out to 18 new Countries Posted: 08 Oct 2010 04:37 PM PDT Last week we covered Android paid app support coming to an additional 18 countries. Now Google has gone and furthered this support and users can now see paid apps in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, and Taiwan. ![]() For users in these countries to be able to purchase apps they need to have the latest Android Market which is being pushed out now, and will reach all users by the end of this week. This update is silent, meaning that users will not see a notification or prompt to update. For developers to make sure your apps are available in these countries, make sure you have targeted your apps to be available in "All Locations." You can make these changes in the Android Market publisher site. This marks even further expansion of the Android Marketplace into other countries as Android is becoming a worldwide phenomenon. RUMOR: HTC Merge/Lexikon to Verizon November 11th? Posted: 08 Oct 2010 02:37 PM PDT Just as we found some leaked pictures earlier this week,a very interesting small Friday rumor has just surfaced stating the HTC Merge or Lexicon will have a November 11th release date. This date sounds accurate, but this is just a rumor until we have some hard evidence, so don’t mark the date yet.
There are a number of Verizon Android devices that are set to come out sometime between the end of October and through November, so expect possible other phones as well. For the mean time stay tuned! Via [DroidLife] ) |
Sprint Galaxy Tab coming November 14th? Posted: 08 Oct 2010 02:37 PM PDT Another release rumor today is that the Sprint version of the Galaxy Tab will release on November 14th. We even get a price in the rumor, with the price for the Galaxy Tab said to be $399. ![]()
According to Boy Genius Report, the much hyped 7-inch tablet will hit the Sprint network on November 14 for $399 with a 2-year agreement. The off-contract price is said to be $599 and will come with no commitment attached. This pricing strategy may seem high for such a device compared to the iPad which offers up more screen real estate for a lower price. One of the key features of the iPad is that it's data is on a pay as you go system without the need for a contract, all while keeping the price down (entry at $499). Only time will tell how Samsung's Tab will do being bound to contracts, but if the November 14th release date is correct we will find out before years end. [Via BGR] ) |
AppBrain gets update: send links/wallpaper to phone Posted: 08 Oct 2010 02:11 PM PDT While I was surfing the internet today, I noticed that AppBrain updated their website along with their Android App. This update allows users send text, URLs, and wallpapers directly to their phone from their own browser of choice. This is a very hand app when you’re lazy like myself and don’t feel like typing out a long text message on your phone, while you can just type it on my computer keyboard and it copies to the clipboard for you. As for the newest feature, wallpapers, you enter the URL of the image you want or upload it, and it will be sent to your device and set as the background.
These features already add onto the greatness of what AppBrain offers, especially to those who aren’t using Froyo yet. Anyone who has an account can see the newest features on the “My Apps” page in the toolbar on the right side. Via[AppBrain] Barcode: ) |
Sony Ericsson Live View to cost 69 euros Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:42 PM PDT At the end of September, Sony Ericsson annouced the LiveView which is an iPod nano type display that can be worn as a watch or clipped onto clothes. Sony Ericsson showed off some of the basic features before, such as being able to read text messages, emails, and open some apps, but they didn’t announce the launch date or any pricing info.
A French gadget blog had some recent time to play with the LiveView at a unnamed trade show and left with some extra goodies, the price and launch date. The launch date is sometime in November. The price is a €69, which turns out to be somewhere around 100$ depending on the exchange rate at the time of the launch date. I must say that it has the potential to be a pretty nifty device with the right integration and apps, but $100 is a little much for an accessory in my view. [Le Journal du Geek via CrunchGear] ) |
Amazon Android App Store May Launch this month Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:27 PM PDT After the leak of it's App Store Distribution Agreement, we all could pretty much confirm the release of an Amazon App Store. However, official details are still hard to come by, if sources "close to the matter are correct" we will see a launch of the App Store in the coming weeks. ![]()
Word is that they are actually currently putting the finishing touches on the application store and have plans to release it very soon, hopefully in the month of October. We have no word yet on an official name, but other than that, most details of the app store were put out in the distribution agreement. We will definitely hear more word as the month progresses. MotoPrint Mobile Printing Service Coming to Android Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:07 PM PDT This week at CTIA we heard word of a currently in development Motorola printing application that will be coming to Android this year. The application is pretty basic and will allow users to print Microsoft Office documents, PDF, and graphics to any PostScript printer on the same local-area network as the device. ![]() Motoprint is currently in beta, and is it's own application. Not being integrated into other apps, the user will have to open the application, select the document, and print from their devices. There is even a Google Map view of all local printers, which would be extremely helpful for campus-wide WiFi printing. No word yet on a price, but if everything goes as expected we can expect to see it show up in the Android Market before the end of 2010. [Via PC Mag] ) |
HTC Desire HD may be coming soon Posted: 08 Oct 2010 01:03 PM PDT HTC’s Desire HD is a phone we’d like to see come to the U.S. as soon as possible! Most likely you’ve heard of the EVO 4G for Sprint, which is very similar to this phone, but with a few additional perks. With the addition of HTC’s Sense 2.0 Cloud features, as well as other recent updates throughout Sense, this phone is sure to leave us drooling for a launch date.

Adobe AIR distribution ease demoed on video, Development to market in about 6 minutes Posted: 08 Oct 2010 12:42 PM PDT With Adobe AIR just being released we are now getting word on just how easy it is to push to the Android Market. How easy? Well, it took Adobe’s Lee Brimelow just over 6 minutes to get a simple test app on the Market. ![]() This is just an early example of it's ease of use, not to mention the ability to push this test application to devices running iOS, and computers running Windows, Mac, and Linux based operating systems. The flood gates have been opened, expect many applications hitting the Android Market via Adobe AIR in the coming weeks. Check out the video at GoToAndLearn. ) |

Android Chief weighs in on Windows Phone 7 Posted: 08 Oct 2010 12:21 PM PDT Andy Rubin, the chief of Android, sat down with PC Mag today for a Q&A session. Among topics of discussion, Androids rivals were mentioned. Mostly focused on Windows Phone 7, where he goes on to state that "the world doesn't need another platform." ![]() Based on the screen shots he has seen he thinks that the platform is "interesting" but beyond that, he does not see the need when Android is already out there.
He also goes on to note that part of the strength in the Android platform as a whole is it's direct incorporation with Google's services. Google has been in this business "since day zero" that is something that Microsoft just can not compare with as they re-enter the smartphone OS market. [Via PC Mag] ) |
Dell Streak Froyo Beta ROM available now Posted: 08 Oct 2010 12:07 PM PDT A Froyo ROM for the Dell Streak, currently in beta, is now available to download via a somewhat lengthy process. Everything is working, and there are a few bugs like the Streak randomly rebooting, or 3G data problems after switching off WiFi. However for a beta in the early stages of a Froyo ROM this is very impressive. ![]() The process is pretty detailed and lengthy and requires updating the baseband. Don't be too concerned, this is all taken care of by a program made by Qualcomm so, in theory, it is safe. However, as with all rooting, nothing is 100% safe and you will need to try it at your own risk. You can check out the instructions for download over at Android @ Modaco ) |
