Major November Update on the way for Nook

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:58 AM PDT

Barnes & Noble ladies and gentlemen get your digital page turning fingers out and strap on your sitting shoes, because there’s going to be some excellent additions to your cherished NOOK device come November 2010. Items requested by adamant readers such as improved search, customized organization of your Barnes & Noble Library, and password protection. Then there’s the fun stuff like quicker page turning, the ability to access your NOOK books across multiple devices (like your phone, iPad, etc.,) with automatic updates to each. That means that if you want to read a couple pages on the bus and all you’ve got is your phone with a NOOK app, once you get home to read some more on your main Nook device, you’re good to go, two pages deeper!

Keeping all of your devices in sync is a big deal. You don’t want to have to have all your apps open, flipping all the pages at once like you’re at a bingo hall. Nay! You want automation. That’s what’s going on here, across all devices: your NOOK eReader, iPhone, iPod touch, Android smartphone, or PC. And it’s free. The application for buying and reading books follows the wave of freeness that’s been flowing steady in our electronic marketplace now for years by being free to download.

NOOK for Android, free to download may I remind you, is also getting an update later this week. This will be NOOK for Android v2.3, featuring such lovely additions as the ability to “Go To” a specific page number, view highlights, notes, deletion of books from your library, search within books, and an updated home screen. The updated home screen and unnamed enhancements are said to make reading and managing side-loaded content easier.

Motorola DROID X SE heading to Verizon?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:37 AM PDT

The large DROID X has been a popular multimedia phone for Verizon Android fans. It looks as if a new DROID X may be launched on Verizon's network sometime soon. The DROID X SE (Special or Silver Edition) is rumored to be coming to the carrier with an array of new features, hopefully.

The differences are mostly unknown, for now. We can clearly see the new Silver bezel – different from the black one found on current models – and it's rumored to be sporting the new 1.2GHz CPU that's going to be used on the DROID 2 Global.

Other than aesthetics and a new CPU, not much is known about the upcoming DROID X SE. As always, we'll let you know when further information is revealed, just don't expect it to come officially from Verizon anytime soon. From the way we're hearing about the Droid 2 Global it seems they like to keep things on a last minute announcement basis only.

ROM Leaked for the T-Mobile myTouch 4G (HTC Glacier)

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:32 AM PDT

We’re well on our way to the Emerald City, yes? Creep your claws into this, oh you anticipators of Project Emerald will love to get dirty in this, a leak of the signed ROM. Turn it up, turn it over, and make sure you do it quick, because from the sounds of it, the T-Mobile myTouch 4G HD is only a few weeks away. Granted, that’s basically three years in waiting for a new device time, but still, get working!

Speculation’s been running rampant on the powers and abilities of this new beast, but now you can grab it and see for yourself. Hang a left on over to the 911HTC blog and pick up the 311MB file. Mod away! Make it something so beautiful noone will be able to resist! Also beware because, as always, there’s no telling what a leaked ROM might do. It might steal your trick or treat candy.

HTC Desire HD unboxing [Video]

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:18 AM PDT

The HTC Desire HD is in the house, and it’s been a while since we were this excited about an Android smartphone. Packing the same 4.3-inch WVGA display as the HTC HD2 and HTC EVO 4G, the Desire HD throws in the latest build of HTC Sense with numerous improvements, including easy DLNA streaming, a new Car Panel interface, enhanced GPS functionality and more.

We wasted no time getting the Desire HD out of its box and slapping a SIM card inside, and of course we made sure there was a camera trained on us throughout. In our hands-on demo with this production HTC Desire HD you can see some of the initial changes over previous versions of Sense; meanwhile the hardware itself is slick and tactile, a solid-feeling block of aluminum that owes a lot to the shape of the Windows Mobile HD2.

The only usability fumbles we’ve found so far are the slightly tricky angle of the lock button and a difficult-to-replace battery door; otherwise the Desire HD fits nicely into the hand. We can’t argue with performance, either, the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor (and 768MB of RAM) keeping things flying along nicely. Meanwhile there’s 1.5GB of app storage on hand, and a microSD card slot down underneath the bottom panel.

Some of the most useful changes are the smallest, in fact, like the new app-switcher bar which has been added to the pull-down notifications pane, and which shows the last eight accessed apps. We’ll be putting the HTC Desire HD through its paces to see how the Android 2.2 smartphone holds up in the real world. Until the full review, enjoy the unboxing and walkthrough video!

Droid 2 update incoming, on track to match DROID X software versions?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:08 AM PDT

In more DROID 2 news, it seems as if users may get the 2.3.15 update that the DROID X received that fixes many Exchange issues among other things. This update will bring Droid 2 users up to Droid X software versions.

A reader over at Droid-Life had contacted Motorola Customer Support asking if an update is coming soon, the answer received was a yes and that it has already been launched, suggesting that the user just waits for the update. Now Customer Support isn't a 100% confirmation, they have been wrong before – many times actually. But keeping the Droid X and Droid 2 on the same software version would make sense.

"It [2.3.15] has been released. Let us just wait for the notification on the phone on how to download it."

Has anyone received the push update? Let us know in the comment section below and we'll keep you updated.

Skype on KDDI Phones Starting in November

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 10:02 AM PDT

Let freedom ring your ringtone! Japanese phone carrier KDDI plans on offering Skype services for a select number of Android phones starting in November. As if it weren’t enough today hearing news of their three new Android mobiles or their fabulous new Android-based Samsung Tablet, now we’re getting news that voice-to-voice calls will essentially be free! Just so long as the person you’re trying to communicate with is also signed up and signed on to Skype, you can call them up text without using up any of your monthly allowance or data plan.

For now, KDDI says they’ll be integrating Skype on two phones, the IS01 and IS03. Further integration on many more devices later on (more than likely next year.) Skype's interim CEO, Adrian Dillon, had the following to say about the whole situation: "KDDI's position as a leading network provider in Japan that offers a wide range of communications services makes it a natural partner for Skype given our vision to make Skype available everywhere and enable users to take their Skype conversations with them wherever they go."

It has always been my hope that services like telephones, texting, and internet would be free, completely free someday. The way it’s going to happen is situations like this, where offering a free talking option on their phones makes KDDI a hero! Someday groups that make boatloads of money from internet-exclusive services will band together to create a superpower strong enough to offer these internets for free. Bank on it. You’d better get on your KDDI IS01 and call somebody (for free.)

Droid 2 recalled from WalMart – Droid 2 Global release imminent?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 09:52 AM PDT

We know the Droid 2 Global is coming, we just aren't exactly sure when. Rumors over the past month have pointed to the Global officially replacing the Droid 2 in Verizon's stock when it's released. It's looking like that day might be sooner than expected – WalMart is currently in the process of shipping back it's Droid 2 stock to it's distributer.

The recall order, placed this weekend, has WalMart sending back it's current stock by Tuesday, October 26th.You can see in the capture below that it has obviously been deleted from WalMart’s stock. We expect the Droid 2 to have a quiet launch, not much hype will surround a phone that's only a slight, but very important, update for some.

If the recall takes place by October 26th, this could be our first hint that the device may hit shelves by the end of the month or early November. If this is the case, we can definitely expect an announcement soon.

Angry Birds Hits 2 million downloads over the weekend

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 06:41 AM PDT

With it's release on Friday, the popular mobile game Angry Birds hit over 1 million downloads within it's first 24 hours – after crashing the GetJar servers. It looks like the game is standing strong in the download numbers just hitting it's next milestone over the weekend, 2 million downloads.

The game marks a significant shift in mobile gaming taking the main focus away from iOS and Apple's line of device. We are starting to see more and more developers shift focus from solely iOS and porting some of their most popular titles to the Android platform.

Angry birds is currently pegged as a 'demo' but developers are promising it's the full title. A paid version is upcoming that will bring the game with no ads.

Carphone Warehouse price Galaxy Tab pre-orders at £530

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 06:20 AM PDT

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is set to hit the UK market on November 1 2010, and launch partner Carphone Warehouse has just kicked off pre-orders for the 7-inch Froyo slate.  They’ve priced the Galaxy Tab at £529.99 unlocked and SIM-free, or $499.99 on a 30 day rolling agreement with £10 for 1GB of data per month.

That’s not a huge discount – but then you’re not getting much of a contract obligation – but we wouldn’t be surprised to see various UK carriers experimenting with longer agreements and bigger chunks knocked off the upfront price of the tablet.  Amazon UK is currently listing the Galaxy Tab for £599.99, though we imagine that might change shortly once the retailer twigs Carphone Warehouses’ price.

appESP app will recommend other apps for you

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 06:15 AM PDT

One of the best things about Android is that here are tons of apps out there for users to choose from meeting just about any need or want for the device. A new app from AppStoreHQ has been unveiled called appESP that is an app for other apps.

That sounds confusing, but the appESP application is a personalized platform that helps you discover apps for your Android phone and is dubbed a discovery engine by the maker. The app will make recommendations for you based on three different sources.

It looks at statistical analysis by comparing apps installed across all Android users, social networking by looking at what your friends are using, and by a function called Zeitgeist. That last one looks through blog posts, tweets, and news for mentions of new apps.

In the end, you get leads for new apps delivered directly to your phone. The user can customize their personal searches by hitting the like or dislike button on the recommended apps to teach appESP what you like and don't like.

KDDI Samsung SMT-i9100 tablet outed ahead of Feb 2011 release

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 03:26 AM PDT

Japanese carrier KDDI isn’t just outing new Android phones today; there’s also a new Samsung tablet, the SMT-i9100, with some obvious family resemblance to the Galaxy Tab but a few differences as well.  Built around a 7-inch 1024 x 600 capacitive touchscreen and running Android 2.2 Froyo, the Samsung SMT-i9100 packs WiFi b/g/n but seemingly lacks the integrated 3G of the European Tab.

It also has a lower-resolution camera, just 2-megapixels rather than the 3-megapixels we’ve seen so far.  Storage is down as well, to 4GB (RAM is still 512MB however), and the only announced accessory is a desk cradle.

The Samsung SMT-i9100 won’t arrive on KDDI in Japan until late February 2011; no mention of pricing at this stage.

HTC Gratia brings Aria to Europe [Update: full specs]

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 02:41 AM PDT

HTC has announced a new Android smartphone, the HTC Gratia, which is basically a European version of the HTC Aria.  The Gratia gets Android 2.2 Froyo, HTC Sense and a 5-megapixel camera; we’re still waiting for the full spec sheet, but we’re guessing it has the same 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen as the Aria and the same 600MHz processor, too.

The HTC Gratia will be available through mobile operators and retailers across major European markets from November 2010.  No word on pricing at this stage.

Update: HTC has sent us over the spec sheet, and it’s confirmed as the same hardware as the Aria.  The big difference is obviously the 3G, with the Gratia getting HSPA/WCDMA 900/2100 support along with its quadband GSM/EDGE.  The display is confirmed at 3.2-inches and HVGA resolution, there’s Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, WiFi b/g, a microUSB port, 3.5mm headphone socket, GPS, a g-sensor, digital compass, proximity sensor and ambient light sensor.  Storage is via microSD card, adding to the 512MB of ROM (RAM is 384MB).

KDDI out new ISO4, IS05 and IS06 Android smartphones

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 01:45 AM PDT

Japan has already taunted us with the Sharp IS03; now carrier KDDI is flaunting a further three Android smartphones that look reasonably tempting.  Toshiba, Sharp and Pantech are behind the new devices – the REGZA IS04, IS05 and SIRIUSα IS06 respectively – running Android and all toting 1-Seg digital TV tuners.

The Toshiba REGZA IS04 has a 4-inch 854 x 480 touchscreen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 12.19-megapixel camera and is waterproof.  It also has WiFi, Bluetooth and high-speed 3G data, together with a microSD card slot.  It’ll land in Japan in January 2010, the only drawback being its Android 2.1 OS.

The Sharp IS05 and Pantech IS06, meanwhile, get Froyo and 3.4-inch touchscreens (854 x 480 on the IS05, 800 x 480 on the IS06).  The IS05 has an 8-megapixel camera, Snapdragon, 720p HD video recording and Bluetooth/WiFi, while the IS06 has a 5-megapixel camera, and will drop in December.
