Overclocking Droid X – For Real!

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 10:44 AM PDT

So you’d like to overclock that lovely little machine, oh but Droid X, isn’ that supposed to be impossible to work with in such a way? I say thee nay! The fine folks over at Android Forums have it all whipped up nice and simple for you to get the most from your little piece of multitasker, and they’ve done it in a way that’s not as terrifyingly unapproachable as you might think.

Many developers have been hacking away diligently at their Droid X devices since they were released (and of course, some were before that,) and much has been accomplished, but there’s that big fat problem of a locked bootloader blocking them like the teeth of a toddler block broccoli. But lo! Check it out, everything you’ve ever dreamed of, all courtesy of Android superstar FreeWELL.

FreeWELL uses the Milestone overclocking approach found on 2.1, lifts it up and tosses it down on DX allowing rooted users to reach hot, hot speeds. Overclocking up to 1.1GHz (stable) with slots set for underclocking if the user does so choose to use them. Oh my! Find all this and more over at Android Forums

Android revenue on the Millennial Network beats iPhone for first time

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:26 AM PDT

Millennial Media has unveiled its report called the mobile Mix for September 2010 that counts the most popular smartphones and devices on the ad network run by the company. According to the latest numbers, Android devices have for the first time ever exceeded the iPhone in revenue on the network.

Android ad requests increased 26% month over month and are up a massive 1283% from January. Between the iPhone and the iPad, Apple devices accounted for 30% of the impressions on the Millennial Network in September. Motorola also beat Samsung to become the second largest device maker on the network.

Motorola can attribute that growth to Android since most of its popular devices run the Android OS. Of the top 20 mobile phones on the network, the Android running Motorola Droid was in second place with 9.66% of users for the month behind the iPhone with 19.28%.

HTC tablet shipments delayed according to analyst

Posted: 19 Oct 2010 04:07 AM PDT

We have talked about the HTC tablet computers before that were expected to hit the market late this year. Rumors are coming in that the tablets are going to be delayed because Google is turning its support for the tablet friendly Android 3.0 release towards other tablet makers.

DigiTimes cites Chinese paper Apple Daily, who cites an analyst from JPMorgan that stated Google would turn Android 3.0 support to Motorola and LG will get support for Android 3.5 rather than HTC. That will mean that the HTC tablets will be on the market no earlier than Q2 2011 if the analyst is correct.

There is no indication on why Google would leave HTC out when it comes to the new tablet friendly Android operating systems. Perhaps it has to do with the suits facing HTC over patents or that HTC will be building Windows Phone 7 handsets.

ANDROID 3.0 HITTING TABLETS THIS YEAR, 4.0 LATE NEXT YEAR

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 08:32 PM PDT

Google is readying Android 3.0 for tablets and is said to be in the early stages of testing the much anticipated mobile operating system. Engineering samples are said to be arriving in December and will devices will be ready for CES early this January.

Acer, ASUS, HTC, Motorola and MSI are expected to all have new hardware running 3.0 in time for the show in Las Vegas. Even Samsung will be showing off 3.0 running on it's already anticipated, 2.2 running tablet.

This marks the beginning of Android really becoming an key player in the market with a tablet-optimized OS. Android is a very popular decision for developers and hardware manufacturers because not only is it open source but it's total licensing is only around $10 compared to ~$60 for Windows' Phone 7.

4.0 has also been talked about internally with a pegged launch date later in the second half of 2011. Although details are very few regarding even 3.0 at this time, we can expect to hear more about 4.0 as time progresses.

We'll be at CES and will be sure to bring you all the latest Android news right from the showroom floor!

MyTouch 4G Features showed off on video included in ROM leak

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 03:30 PM PDT

ROM's and ROM leaks are usually only of direct interest of developers and the hacking community, however the MyTouch 4G's ROM had a little something extra discovered by our friends at AndroidCentral.

Included in the ROM that leaked earlier, is a video showing off some of the features of the upcoming addition to the myTouch lineup. The 50 second video meant to play on the device itself on first launch (hence it being sideways) shows off Video Chat, HD Video Recording, and its Screen Share features.

DROID 2 Officially announced via Verizon’s 800 number

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 03:20 PM PDT

The DROID 2 that's been the focus of many rumors, has not even been confirmed by Verizon, until now. If you call Verizon's 800 number and are put on hold, you will hear the new audio ad that advertises the device.

Now the ad doesn't give too many details, just confirms the Global's existence. With it you will be able to "have the ability to make calls in more than 221 countries" yes, that's more countries than there is on Earth. Looking past the marketing error we know it will be running 2.2, have a slide out QWERTY keyboard, and will be CDMA and GSM.

Hopefully we will hear more about this phone soon, as it’s expected to replace the DROID 2.

Verizon Introducing Tiered Data Plans, Launching October 28th?

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 03:11 PM PDT

Following suit of almost all carriers, Verizon Wireless is expected to launch it's new tiered data plans October 28th according to Engadget. The new plans are, not surprisingly, expensive when comparing them to the unlimited plans that were offered not too long ago.

This is for the companies 3G network and includes smartphones and tablets with a smart phone unlimited option available. 4G data pricing will be announced with the launch of the network later this year. Full break down of what's coming:

  • Smartphone owners will choose between $15 for 150MB with $0.10 / MB overage, or $29.99 for unlimited access.
  • For tablets there will be be $20, $35, and $50 plans for 1GB, 3GB, and 5GB, all with overage of $10 per gigabyte. There will also be a $80 plan for 10GB with the same overage rate.
  • MiFi, FiveSpot, and integrated netbook / notebook modem owners will choose between $50 / 5GB and $80 / 10GB plans. The MiFi and FiveSpot will also have access to the tablet-centric $35 / 3GB plan as part of a 90-day promo. All of these plans have overage priced at 1GB for $10.
  • Feature phones will need to choose between $1.99 “pay as you go” $15 for 150MB, or $29.99 for unlimited.
  • USB modem pricing remains unchanged at $39.99 for 250MB or $59.99 for 5GB.

As we have seen with other carriers the new prices are definitely a step down for heavy smartphone users and are dreadful for tablet users. Only time will tell the success of these plans, but we did know they were coming backing in July. Looks like unlimited data from national carriers is as good as dead.

Android Gingerbread : First Details

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 02:50 PM PDT

Android Gingerbread, the most tasty version of Android to come out yet. It’s still in development, but the details are peeking through the cracks. Let’s take a taste! First of all, there’s a very possible graphical overhaul. Google’s hired ex-Palm user interface expert Matias Duarte, pointing directly at a lovely new look that’ll blow everyone else out of the water (not that this is going to be the hardest thing to do in the world, you aesthetic sinners, you.) Standard icons have a new simpler look, appearing now to have all come from the same illustrator rather than a gaggle. And then there’s green, so much green!

This blurred as sin photo is all that’s available to the world at the moment, so I added a little gingerbread man there to brighten your blurry blues away. The notification bar’s turned from a milk color to a gray, a color more and more prevalent on the internet in layouts these days, have you noticed? After that, there’s lots of greens, a prominent logo for whichever carrier you’ve purchased this from. The main homescreen is essentially the same, most of the colors moving toward a more prominent green, especially the Browser and Dialer buttons which are no longer gray but a wild lime.

Sources report that a lot of the change will come through the feel of the apps, making them more a part of the OS than a plugged-in bonus. YouTube, for example, will be displayed in a way unlike any other place you’re going to be able to access it, with a full-screen continuous play mode called “Lean Back” which you can also use to view the newly -launched Google TV.

Things are getting bouncy as they’ve been getting on iOS devices and on TouchWiz 3.0 devices when walking up and down lists. Force-fields hit your finger as you reach the end of the line in either direction. Gingerbread overall seems to accelerated, slightly smoother, and in so many tiny ways just a little nicer. Then there’s video chat.

Using the same protocols that power video chat on the desktop version of Google Talk. SIP support will be added so you can receive calls on your Google Voice number over WiFi and cell. This means that even if you don’t have a voice plan, you can use your device as a phone for free just so long as you’re within range of the internet. This feature seems to be Gingerbread-and-higher specific. So what a tasty treat there shall be!

Google Voice Updated to Support Searching Text Messages and Voicemail Transcripts

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 02:39 PM PDT

If you use Google Voice, then you know that it’s a great application, but it isn’t perfect. That’s why when an update pops up, you may pounce on it, thinking that it’s all going to get better. The application just got an update recently, and with it comes a big feature inclusion — one that people have been asking for for awhile now.

Users of Google Voice can now search for what they want found in text messages, and voicemail transcriptions. Of course, whether or not it actually finds what you’re looking for, versus whatever Google transcribed from the particular caller will probably depend on a few factors, like whether or not Google recorded what was actually said. But, at least it’s a shot towards getting that perfect application we all know Google Voice can be. If you try it out, let us know in the comments how it goes for you.

AT&T U-Verse Application Now Available for HTC Aria & Samsung Captivate

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 02:24 PM PDT

Today, AT&T announced that they would be bringing their U-Verse application to a few Android-based handsets. While only two are supported at the launch, AT&T did also announce that two more handsets would be supported in the near future. The application will allow subscribers to schedule recordings for shows and movies on their home DVR, right from their phone.

The application will also allow for subscribers to download television shows right to their handset, but only if they subscribe to the U300 package. That will run you about $87 per month, but the plans can also go higher. The Press Release also says that you’ll only be able to download television shows over WiFi, so it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to do so over a 3G connection, unfortunately. As of right now, the Samsung Captivate and HTC Aria are the only Android handsets supported for the application, but the Motorola BRAVO and Flipside will be supported soon. You can read the full press release below for more details.

T-Mobile G2 Shown Off in Pair of HTC Commercials

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 01:54 PM PDT

If you’ve been waiting to see HTC show off the T-Mobile G2 in some of their commercials, you don’t have to wait any longer. Just as the other advertisements have been, the point of the ad is not to highlight every single feature of the device, but to narrow it down to a wide variety of them, and show them in action. Even just a glimpse of the calendar, or the messaging app, and the slide-out physical keyboard, all go a long way to showcase the strengths of the device.

There are two of them this time, both of them focusing on the way that we use our phone to take control of every day life. The first one goes as far as to call you the CEO of your own family. Going through the features, like the camera and text messaging. Both commercials show the landscape keyboard in all its glory, adding that bit of physical keyboard goodness that people out there, at least a few of them, still prefer. You can check out both videos below.

Micromax Launching Vendor’s First Android Handset on October 20th

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 01:20 PM PDT

While it may not be as high profile as, say, the HTC Desire HD, the unnamed Android-based handset set to be announced by Micromax this Wednesday isn’t any less special. Special, in the sense that this marks the first Android handset to be launched by the vendor in India, and it’s always good to see Android landing in markets all over the world. According to Cell Passion, Micromax has a press event scheduled for October 20th, where they will officially unveil their first Android smartphone.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much known about the phone itself. There are grumblings that the smartphone could be an “entry-level” device, and even see the light of day with Android 1.6 under the hood. The smartphone would be upgraded to Android 2.1 in the future, at some point, but the launch would see an out-dated version of Android right out of the gate. Other features could include an HVGA display, with a resolution of 320 x 480. There will also be the standard integrated GPS and WiFi. It could help Micromax that they’re the third largest handset vendor in India, though, and the handset they’re getting ready to show off could indeed be a high-end device. Place your bets now, as the unveiling is coming up.

Archos 43 PMP Now Available to Pre-Order

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 01:05 PM PDT

The Archos 43, better to be called a Personal Media Player due to its smaller size, is one of the five new “tablet” devices that Archos was excited to announce to the world not too long ago. And, it looks like the company is trying their best to keep their word of a mid-October launch date, as the PMP has just gone up for pre-order courtesy of Amazon.

While Archos may be happy calling it a tablet, the Archos 43 may be too small to warrant the title. Featuring a 4.3-inch touchscreen display, it’s certainly smaller than even Dell’s five inch Dell Streak “tablet” device. In any event, whatever you want to call it, it also features the Android Operating System, has an HDMI output port, and integrated WiFi. You can pre-order the 16GB version right now for $249.99, if you’re aching to get your hand on a new PMP with some Android love. And if you need some more information on the device, go check out our hands-on time with the 43.

HTC Desire Z Spreads to Canada

Posted: 18 Oct 2010 12:34 PM PDT

Canadians running wild in their plaid boxer shorts and North of the Border themed Android Anticipation t-shirts is the scene in Canada today as Bell Canada announces that it will soon release the HTC Desire Z. This Desire is one of two we’ve had our hands on, clicking and flicking, and now all those folks up there above our heads will have the chance to rock around with them too. It’s unknown how different this version of the Desire Z will be, if they’ll be exactly the same as those available in the states or if the usual slew of complaints by abnormally disturbed customers will be rectified. Bell Canada can handle it, right?

What is known is that the HTC Desire Z will be released in Canada with many of the same specs as the stateside version. Amongst those lovely features are: 4GB of built-in ROM memory, 512MB or RAM, 800 MHz Qualcomm processor, 3.7 inch capactive touchscreen, 5MP flash camera, and of course, Android 2.2. A rather lovely looking beast, wouldn’t you say? Oh you’ve not seen it up close? Well once again, hooray, because we’ve got it! Take a look over at our fully hands on review of the Desire Z (plus the Desire HD) and note that while this version and the Canadian version are bound to be very similar, there’s a big possibility of some bugs being squashed out before the release.
