Volume Goes Up And Down! What Fun!

Posted: 13 Oct 2010 03:11 AM PDT

Humor me for a second here, but I swear to you, the concept of the Vol Portable Speakers is too similar to the Diwali Lanterns available here in India! Have a look at this or this! However I don't mean to take away the novelty in design of what Carson Leong has done here. In fact, I think it's a great approach of using the natural up-down sliding motion to increase and decrease the volume of the speaker. So much better than just hitting some buttons or turning a dial!

Crystal Power Up

Posted: 13 Oct 2010 12:13 AM PDT

So I was in the comic books and games store the other day, minding my own business, and what catches my eye? Dice. Thousands of dice. All sizes and shapes and amounts of sides and materials. Materials, you say? Yes, there was a case full of dice whose prices ranged into the triple digits for a small pack: packs of silver, gold, and other fine materials. Wacky wonderful! So what’ve the designers at Calypso Crystal got brewing for you in their lab along these lines? Maybe something… crystal?

An iPhone dock, of course!

You didn’t see that material coming, did you? Especially with a name like Calypso Crystal?

There’s nothing like a market filled with people so passionate about their product that they’d strive to get that product not only made with the finest craftsmanship, but made of the finest materials, too. I’m surprised they’ve not made an iPod cord studded with diamonds yet, or perhaps MacBook cases sewn out of endangered yak’s wool. Luckily, or perhaps by some divine will, there is this bit of magic right here: “Crystal Dock” for your iPhone. Use it in your office, use it in your bedroom, or use it on a mountain (see gallery below.)

Calypso Crystal informs us that each dock is made entirely by hand out of a solid chunk of crystal glass. There are four designs: Aurora (produced only in 999 units,) Beau, Celestia and Dune. All designs sync and charge iPhones and I wager to bet any other sort of iPod that’ll fit.

Red Lights in Hong Kong

Posted: 13 Oct 2010 12:03 AM PDT

One of the designers of Living Pixels, (one of the largest amounts of fun I’ve had writing about a lamp,) has designed another miraculous light holder with the name “A+ Lamp” on it. This lamp can hang every which way – up, down, left, right, and is inspired by the wet market in Hong Kong, a place where no matter which shop, stand, or place of business you come upon, there’s bound to be some red lampshades. Why? Red light makes food look tasty!

So wait, you must be saying, why make this homage to the red lampshade… you know… green? Well, because designer Chen Siu Wa Match did not want to keep that piece of the puzzle, he wanted the red lampshade’s omnipotence! This A+ Lamp is everywhere at once in the same way that the red light encompasses the Hong Kong wet market!

The “A+” part of the name of this lamp identifies this product as part of Chen’s project, (also called “A+”), a project that is attempting to widen the bounds and update the products of plastic brand Star Red aka Red A! This brand Red A has been producing more than 600 products for consumers since 1949 without, Chen says, much innovation, and he believes it is time for an update! Thusly, the A+ Lamp uses a classic Red A lamp design and expands upon it, adding a multi-function handle so that the lamp can be a floor light, table light, ceiling light or wall light, and also can be used indoors or outdoors, no problem!

Medical Patients of the Present

Posted: 13 Oct 2010 12:03 AM PDT

To me, the most enthralling idea presented in the following massively important project you’re about to experience is this: “I don’t think of myself as the Patient of the Future – it is the perspective of the providers that puts me in this box of the Patient of the Future – I’m a patient of the present!” This project / video presentation is called “Design We Can All Live With” and it is about how a Minneapolis-based design firm is aiming toward a better patient-based healthcare system through technology right this moment.

This firm goes by the name “Worrell” and this solution session aims at a situation based in a technological world, but a world that intimately connects doctors with their patients. This presentation shows an epic talk between design professionals working with Worrell and one doctor and one patient. They of course represent the greater whole, expressing the wants and needs of the entire community.

This talk represents the past few years of Worrell talking with patients in their homes and at the medical office and hospitals about their needs, the needs of what Worrell knows are stakeholders in the medical world. Worrell is an industrial design firm that works in interactive and medical technologies and has been for the past 35 years – they’ve been working on this particular project for the past four or five.

The images you see below in the gallery and later in the movie are of a set of technologies called “Pathway.” These web powered devices will not only store and keep current your medical records, they’ll aid in providing you, the patient, with helpful information like articles on your condition sent directly from your doctor.

Take a look at this video “Design We Can All Live With” and be completely inspired and excited for not the future of medical care, but the soon-to-be present!
