Posted: 26 Oct 2010 08:55 AM PDT I’ve seen many, many table and lamp combinations before but they’re generally machined and modern. If you’re more of a earthy earth type person, the Table & Lamp by Florian Kallus might be up your alley. It definitely possesses modern lines but the raw nature of its construction warms it up a tad. I particularly like the way the legs are angled, as if the tabletop exists on a precarious balance. Designer: Florian Kallus ---------- |
Posted: 26 Oct 2010 03:04 AM PDT Kind of reminding me of the Pocket Light, this Paper Light takes the concept of ultra-thin illumination to a new level. Wind driven droplights harnesses kinetic energy during the day and transforms it into electro-magnetic energy as the blades cut the lines of magnetic force, and the energy stored in accumulator cells. At night, they transform to romantic LED mood lights that brighten every corner of the room via the reflectors on the ceiling. Dainty cards that are hung up by a string, look as captivating as the wind chimes! The Paper Light won a Liteon Award this year. Designer: Wen Jie Zheng ---------- |
Posted: 26 Oct 2010 02:30 AM PDT The Swing + is a wash basin and utility unit that encloses a drawer and what looks to be a secondary shallow basin. The idea is to make a modular unit that befits compact living spaces. The prototype scale model looks convincing, but I'm not a great fan of pivoting integrated toilets! Give me a luxurious Waterfall Sink any day! Designer: Yeonghun Hyun ---------- |
Posted: 26 Oct 2010 01:42 AM PDT This one here, the Dreamfly is for the sheer joy of a carefree childhood. It's not an earth-shattering idea, and its existence will not make any difference in your efficiency. But it will bring you a few moments of laughter, and maybe some bonding time with loved ones. The concept is of an umbrella that flies (like a kite)…Mary Poppins beware! It's got jazzy LED lights that glimmer at night and basically implores you to drag yourself outdoors to catch some wind and fun! Designers: YuKwang Kang & Jinsu Cho ---------- |
Posted: 26 Oct 2010 12:10 AM PDT The following project is called “Poetry of Efficiency” and it is very poetic indeed. Created by Tom Strala, this lamp seeks to address the line between hate an love for the new world wave of energy-saving madness. There is more than one sculptural lamp in this project, each one of them being called “Calmares” or, for example, “Calmares I.” Each of these lamps is comprised of several dozen energy-saving florescent tubes, each of them consuming just 24 watts of energy. In the sculpture “Calmares I,” Strala connects 73 bulbs to construct a sphere of light, one of beauty and futuristic fantasy. The base is composed of white aluminum tubes mounted on a spherical base. Each of these is ended with an Ostram “Circolux” energy-saving bulb, 22 cm in diameter, each emitting the same amount of light as a 150 watt light bulb. Together, the “Calmares I” emits 124,100 lumens of light with only 1,700 watts of power. Sassy! There are multiples of “Calmares I” and “Calmares II”, each of them available for purchase directly from Strala himself. Designer: Tom Strala ---------- |
Posted: 26 Oct 2010 12:04 AM PDT Designer Quentin de Coster hopes to ride the border between art and design with these container objects made of your very favorite material in the whole world! That’s right, they’re porcelain. Look like they’re made of something soft, yes? That’s because while they’re all made from the same mold, they’re allowed to deform on their own while unmoulding and cooking. Wild stuff! What do you think of an object such as this? One where the main function is to raise questions in your mind, one where its entire existence is in place to influence the style of production and push the limits of the industry? How about that? Posted: 26 Oct 2010 12:04 AM PDT How many clocks do you have in your house, on your wall, that generate new pieces whenever the hour grows late? Zero!? Well that’s a serious piece of business we’ve gotta take care of right this moment. You like nature, right? How about flowers? Excellent. Let’s hook you up with some growth right here in the form of the Flower Clock by designer Rafael Assandri. Each petal represents 5 minutes. Every half an hour, you’ve got 6 new petals. Make some sense? Each time a new hour begins, a new petal begins to expand. Materials and machinery non-existent at the moment. Quite the conceptual piece of greenery.
