Sumo Sway, Beanbags Are Comfy

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 08:53 AM PST

There’s the trashy looking beanbag that only looks right in a kid’s room or college dorm and then there’s the more sophisticated beanbag that says you’re a little more mature now. That’s why we like Sumo Lounge’s plushy and stuffed offerings. We’ve mentioned them before and they’re back with a new product called the Sway Single and Sway Couple. Both come in microsueded or corduroy shells and the new curved back makes it even more comfortable.

Designer: Sumo Lounge (Buy it here $249-$279)

Meanwhile, In The Agricultural Sector…

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 08:36 AM PST

This work was created for the exhibition Beeld Hal Werk in Amsterdam which included some 59 sculpted works. The idea came from Louis-Ferdinand Celine’s ‘Death on credit’ in which a pseudo scientist tries to increase the size of his crops by radiating the land, only to harvest small rotten, maggot-infested potatoes. Needless to say, it didn’t work. This modern version looks like a 1980’s crash landed sci-fi prop. Lasers on stun PEW PEW! All made possible with the help of the Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture.

Phallic Much?

Rise and Shine is a tribute to the Edison lightbulb which helped accelerate us into industrial era but after 130 years, it seems the light is finally dimming. The lightbulb will soon be banned from the EU and similar measures are taking place all over the world. In honor, this cheeky presentation shows the powerful rise of the lightbulb in a symbolic way – the brevity of existence.

Wheels Of the Cycle Give Me Power…

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 03:03 AM PST

Power to juice up my gadgets, power to spike up my laptop! The idea behind re:energy concept is this: you ride the cycle and the wheels function as a generator to convert kinetic energy to power, and store the juice. When you run out of battery for your gadgets, recharge them by hooking them up to this unique cycle. A very do-able idea so you tech-specialists should have fun talking about this…on similar lines, we do have a pedal-driven washing machine invented!

Look…My Phone Has A Tail!

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 01:00 AM PST

The cute little Mobile Tail instantly transforms your phone to a viewing display. The heartening inspiration behind this tail is One Hundred and One Dalmatians; thus the Dalmatian tail. It's crafted from flexible liquid silicone rubber (LSR) – a non-reactive, high-purity material and attaches to any device via the suction cup. More than anything else, the idea of the tail and its sweet packaging makes it a must-want in my list!

Podlings of Light

Behold a lovely plug-n-play lamp, one where you decide how it looks based on how you put the pieces together. It’s called ChromoSoma and it’s designed by Javier Alejandre. It’s a brilliantly simply yet hugely and decidedly thick lamp made for those with a taste for the floor-sitting nature it inflicts. Made up of two pieces: base and branch, each new piece creating a new bit of tree, creating your own personal forestral moment.

It’s a genealogical tree, one that you make real. each chromosome you determine, each piece of glazed ceramics you attach. The production system of this project is plaster cast, the creation of each piece unique, making the whole project a one-of-a-kind piece of art.

The creator of this project once had a website at http://javieralejandre.co.cc/, but it seems to be down now. If anyone has an idea of where J.A. has run off to, please leave note or let us know of a new address.

Composting in Muted Tones

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 12:03 AM PST

It’s the funny situation we’re in as a society, one where we’ve got lovely green resources such as plant “waste” that ends up going to waste each day of the year simply because our day-to-day lives don’t have room for collecting and using. Instead that waste does indeed go to waste, but designers Patrice Mouillé & Alain Tessier want to put a hand toward ending that with Vertuo, a Worm composter.

Decorative pots for making compost with worms. Our little lovely friends! With these elegant, simple, clean pots there’s an efficient speedy project anyone can take on. Vertuo opens “with a simple twist of the lid” becoming open and ready for a little litter at the bottom of the first compartment. The litter is a mix of newsprint, sand, soil, water, and earthworms.

The compost goes through traps that are drawn once the tank is filled from above. Each time you add fresh waste into the top compartment, you continue the composting process. Below, the user can collect liquid fertilizer and grab his or her compost to “green his Vertuo” and his entire home.

The ceramic is ceramic so that it might retain the optimum amount of humidity for the compost and of the compost. Glazed ceramic is hygienic, aesthetically pleasing, inert, tough, rot proof, and resistant to the outdoor elements.

Suspension of Some Strong Colors

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 12:03 AM PST

Once you’re inside this post, scroll down to the gallery and check out the color selections you’ve got when you’re going to consider your brand new Plera lamp. Power! Strength! That’s what’s going on here. This Plera is a new suspension lamp concept, the word plera meaning to funnel in Friulan, a language spoken in northeastern Italy. It’s a strange touch of two disparate materials for an excellent feel – not to be left crashing down!

Meant to express minimalism at the same time as showing the difference between the soft touch of the wood and the cold touch of porcelain. Elegant and classy meets friendly and warm. It is the upside-down tunnel to loveliness. Diameter: 19cm H17 cm. Seems like there might be a move toward porcelain in industrial design as of late, yes? I get that feeling. It’s such a fragile material, but there’s nothing really quite like it when it comes to feel and grace in appearance.
