State Of The Arm

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 09:11 AM PST

We’ve got a secret. We’ve been quietly working with AEG and Electrolux on a new blog called “State of the Arm”, proving the arm is a wonderful piece of engineering – one that has solved many conundrums in our mechanical world. Look around you. I’m sure you could find an “arm” to many of the ordinary objects in your home. It’s just too good of a design template, so good that when Electrolux needed to design a new spray arm for their dishwasher – guess where they looked to.

Energia!

The Viva Light Tower is a lamp post but totally independent from the grid. It derives its power from three natural sources; sun, wind, and biochemical. Seems like an interesting idea but looks quite expensive to implement, but hey – lamp posts and street lights need a massive upgrade if we’re to cut emissions by the year 2020. This is one idea that could see our way there.

Shoes That Clean The Floor

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 08:40 AM PST

The FOKI is a floor cleaning shoe, yea you read that correctly. It has two rotary cleaners underneath each shoe to sweep up dust and kill bacteria. They’re cordless but there’s a LED display on the side to indicate battery levels. It sounds weird but if I shut my eyes really hard to imagine the possibilities of clean floors with every step, I’m sold. I hate sweeping – please, anything to make cleaning less tedious.

The team has decided not to keep the card but send it across to one lucky YD reader as a personalized Christmas greeting! To win the card, all you need to do is wish us in return…right here in the comments…

Also, hop over to the SparklesNGlitter nook to check out some cute Christmas stuff!

One Album Band Aid

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 05:29 AM PST

The Skinny Player kinda reminds me of the O+ Music Campaign where the promotional kit offers one song in various mediums. The concept here with the Skinny Player is to offer one album space on a portable – Band Aid-esque device. The self-sticking player houses a play/stop button and flexible speakers. Although I am not so sure about the sound quality for the output, but the idea is worth exploring. The user-scenario is for exercise or such places where you want to keep your hands free, but still carry your music with you.

The unique angle to the player is that hopes to use your body heat for powering the device. Now if this is possible or utopian , is left to be seen.

Divided Shower

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:54 AM PST

The BRS is a shower system that features a transparent tank that divides the shower panel from the washbasin and toilet cistern, back to back. Although this Liteon Awards winning design is intended for water saving means while waiting for your shower water to heat up; I like it for its design layout. The only change I would like to suggest is to have everything on one side, because the back-to-back design limits space usage and will not be feasible for small toilets.

Flying Yogi On A Stool!

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:43 AM PST

Meet the Meditation Everyday, a seating option inspired by the levitating yogi and his meditation capabilities. The design appeals to my curious mind, which wants to know if it will support my heavy frame in the lotus position. The thing with meditation is that even a trained mind gets fidgety and makes excuses for you to shift in your place, disturbing your balance and peace. So perched on this seat, will my mind be still or keep wondering about Humpty Dumpty's great fall!

Meditation Everyday allows the subtle and smooth movement in diverse directions while sitting. Its half-coconut shaped pillar and the metal ring with a silicon rubber provide the flexible motion. The width is suitable for the cross-legged position which is the first step of the meditation. Users enhance the balance skills and experience the pure consciousness.

HUGE Rolling

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 12:13 AM PST

Hooray for designer Arturo Ariño R! I love so very much to do write-ups on wild vehicles such as this. This spectacular automotive goes by the name Phase 2.0 and it’s an all-terrain three-wheeler. It’s got an auto-pressurized tire for adapting to multiple environments such as desert dunes or swamps, its two smaller tires able to move all over the place for either front or rear-wheel situations (the big tire is of course the one that’s always in charge.)

Going over irregular terrain, such as rocky regions, the tire pressure is down, going high speeds down the Autobahn, tire pressure is at the max. A.A.R. intends this vehicle to be far off into the future for real life applications, but for science fiction stories, right in the now.

Chained Benches in Black

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 12:06 AM PST

Thank you Thomas Perz and Petrus Gartler, designers extraordinaire, for today you’ve given me a treat to peek at. It’s called GETIER and it’s a bit of the ol’ public space furniture. That’s right, the kind that sits out there for everyone to see, for everyone to sit on, and for everyone to share. The most important element in this sort of situation, in our human community of course, is to make sure what whatever piece of furniture we’ve out out in the open is bolted down. And they’ve got that worked out real nice.

These benches were chosen out of 51 entries in a competition called "Design in Public Spaces" along with one other design by the name of "Desgin GRA-Z" by Johanna Prechtl. GETIER is a bench with some fabulous character – now sitting in a set on several in the city of Graz.

Each bench is locked to the spot with a rather wickedly strong looking link-chain. This chain has a bit of slack so as to allow the users of the bench a bit of individuality in where they’d like to sit. Limited in movement, but moveable all the same. Each bench is constructed of powder-coated stainless steel and Iroko, a quite weather-resistant wood known for it’s excellence VS deformation.

The first 10 benches were constructed locally and according to the highest of Styrian quality standards. After this first limited run, the designers are on the lookout for partners interested in helping make the bench a mass produced piece of public furniture.

One Gigantic White Cabinet

Posted: 22 Nov 2010 12:02 AM PST

The cool folks over at KINZO are expanding their office furniture series “KINZO AIR” which we’ve written about before. Now here’s a feature on the cabinet by the name of AIR CABIN. It’s a giant brick, a fantastic monolith which opens up to reveal an abundance of space for all your office supplies and/or whatever else you’d love to stack inside. This AIR CABIN is a low sideboard filing cabinet that “swallows up to 90 files” and hides them away in a piece of furniture that works more like a piece of architecture than a moveable construction.

There’s a handle up top and center, all sides are smooth satin MDF surfaces with flush-mounted sliding doors with no less than a state-of-the-art lift and slide mechanism. Both doors are lifted into their open “parking position” for insertion and organization, closed for the mega block.
