NOOKcolor can now use Android Market (If you’re Rooted, that is)

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 10:42 AM PST

Remember back at the tail end of November when those superstars over at XDA rooted the NOOKcolor? Remember how basic it was and all they really had on there was Angry Birds (what else do you need?) Well now there’s something even BETTER – complete access to the Android Marketplace! Hooray! Get to downloading!

REMEMBER before you get started that this is a HACK and should be treated as such. In no way at ALL will Barnes and Noble be insuring your device work under these circumstances, especially since you will have already broken in past their reader-centric system with the root. If you don’t know what you’re doing, probably don’t do it. The process for getting the Android Market is a wild and twisted road, and one that should be followed precisely. Instructions on how to get to the place you’re aiming at are over at [NOOK Devs] – have fun!

And don’t forget to take a peek back at our “Week With” NOOKcolor reviews, an exhaustive look through the inner and outer workings of the device.

Creative ZiiO appears at the FCC

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 10:00 AM PST

Announced last month, the Creative ZiiO is no secret, however, it’s always nice to see products moving closer to a US release. With the 10-inch tablet hitting the FCC it’s a good indication that the line of tablets will be hitting the US market here soon.

Within in the filing is external photos, internal photos, and even the user manuals. However, unless the price of this tablet is right, it probably won’t make a great impact on the Android-based tablet market. There is no mention of the Android Marketplace or support for 3rd party apps, but if it’s cheap, users will buy.

Android make its way onto Fanboy and Fangirl’s wedding cake

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 09:41 AM PST

What happens when an Android-loving LG employee marries an Android-loving T-Mobile employee? An Android themed cake, of course. Happy couple Andy and Kaylee were recently wed and decided to have both an Android themed cake and complimenting menu with Androids holding hands present at their reception.

Andy writes:

We got the idea in the middle of planning the wedding and found a great cake maker who was able to pull it off. As well I designed the menu with Androids holding hands :]

Huawei Ascend for MetroPCS Launched for $179

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 08:06 AM PST

Despite the fact that the Huawei Ascend, an Android 2.1-equipped entry-level device, just launched on Cricket, it looks like MetroPCS wanted to get in on the action as well. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to match the Cricket price. However, the device, as should be expected, is the exact same. Featuring a 3.5-inch HVGA display, and WiFi connectivity, the Ascend may not be the brightest Android star, but it’s certainly not the worst.

Especially when the unsubsidized price for the handset is still under $200, even with MetroPCS. For the $179 price tag, you also get a 3.2MP camera on the back of the handset. It did launch with Android 2.1, and there’s no word on whether or not the device will ever seen an update. It’s available right now, so if you’re looking for a new Android option on MetroPCS, here’s one.

White Samsung Galaxy S Arrives in Germany

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 07:51 AM PST

It’s been just over a month since the white Galaxy S from Samsung landed in the United Kingdom, and now it looks like those in Germany who wished hard enough to get their own version can sigh a sigh of relief. Samsung has just revealed that the device has just been launched in that region. It’s available from Samsung directly, or you can purchase the device from Amazon Germany, unlocked, and for a cheaper price tag.

As for the device itself, it’s the same exact version you’ll find in the United Kingdom. The back panel is white, while the front of the device is still black. What’s also interesting, though, is that Samsung apparently felt like launching the 1GHz Hummingbird processor-equipped device with Android 2.1, and not 2.2. However, rumors suggest that Samsung is looking to update the device in the near future. There’s plenty of speculation that it could see 2.3, or Gingerbread, and skip 2.2 entirely. Fingers crossed, right?

As for pricing, Samsung will let you pick up the device for €649, while Amazon Germany is selling the handset for €463.99.

HTC EVO Shift 4G Shows Off Keyboard, Release Date Believed to be January 9th

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 07:34 AM PST

While Sprint and HTC may be holding their cards close to their chest when it comes to the EVO Shift 4G, the smaller version of the already released EVO 4G, that’s not stopping the device from finding some face time on the Internet. While we’ve already seen what the device will look like with a protective case on it, this time around we get to see how that four-row keyboard looks when it’s open.

The protective case is still present on the device, which makes this the second time around where the device has been featured with a case. The keyboard is the focus of the image, though, showing the roomy keyboard, and that interesting off-white colored trackpad-looking spot on the bottom-right of the ‘board. Looking at the image, though, it doesn’t look like those keys are going to be the easiest to use. Hopefully they have more travel and feedback then what this image suggests they will have.

As for a release date, a leaked image sent over to AndroidCentral suggests that the HTC EVO Shift 4G will land in Sprint stores on January 9th. While the original release date was suggested to be January 6th, it would make more sense for it to be the ninth, as Sprint loves to launch devices on Saturdays. Of course, nothing is confirmed at this point, but if the EVO Shift 4G really is coming that soon, we should expect to hear some official word sooner than later.

The HTC EVO Shift 4G is said to feature a 3.7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, be WiMAX compatible, and have a camera on the back with a single LED flash. There aren’t many other details about the device yet.

Galaxy Tab Luxury Edition to cost about $1000

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 05:58 AM PST

If you are a wealthy geek that wants a Galaxy Tab, but you don't want the same old plain version everyone else gets a new Luxury Edition is coming. The Luxury version will set you back $1,000 and was unveiled at the Millionaire Fair expo in Europe.

The Luxury Edition is like the standard version as far as hardware and specs go. The only difference is that it comes with an exclusive leather case and a Bluetooth headset. Yeah, those are the only differences.

The Luxury Edition of the Galaxy Tab will launch on Wednesday and sell through the end of January. I would think that Samsung would have at least given a special color to the device, the extra money for a case and a Bluetooth headset hardly seems sensible.

Angry Birds looks for new ways to make money

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 05:50 AM PST

Offering an app like Angry Birds for free doesn't mean that the game can’t make a bunch of money. Rovio supports the free game on Android with advertising and does well at it according to estimates. Rovio is also looking at new ways to make money on the game.

Rovio has teamed up with a carrier in Finland called Elisa to sell upgrades to Angry Birds users starting next year called Eagle upgrades. The new system will allow the carrier to grab in-app charges for Rovio since the Android market can’t do that directly.

The service will let the Angry Birds player call in an eagle airstrike to kill off those pigs if they just can't figure out how to get past a certain level. Each airstrike will cost the player real money and would presumably charge the fee to the users mobile bill.

Pantech P8000 surfaces with Android onboard

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 05:28 AM PST

Pantech has been making mobile phones for a long time now and typically the devices are more focused on low price than they are on high-end features and functions. A new device from Pantech has surfaced called the P8000 and this one has Android for the OS.

The new smartphone is thought to be heading to AT&T. It has Bluetooth onboard and will be the first device from Pantech with Android. Considering how popular the OS is, it’s no surprise to see Pantech move to Android for its lower cost mobile devices.

The device is thought to be going by the codename Moon and uses 850MHz and 1900MHz bands, presumably aiming the device at AT&T. Other specs like the processor and screen size are unknown at this time.

$100 Dell Streak as Best Buy crank up the subsidies

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 01:46 AM PST

Dell’s Streak can now be picked up for just $99.99 with a new, two-year AT&T agreement, undercutting its previous price by $150. The new deal is available through Best Buy (rather than from Dell direct) and includes free shipping.

Both the black and white versions of the Streak are available in the deal, and if you’ve purchased a Streak from the retailer within the past thirty days, you can apparently call their 1-888-BEST-BUY number and they’ll refund you the difference.

Motorola’s Honeycomb tablet leaks ahead of Verizon launch

Posted: 13 Dec 2010 12:33 AM PST

Motorola’s upcoming 10-inch Android Honeycomb tablet has leaked, giving us an extended look at the slate Andy Rubin briefly previewed last week. The images passed to Engadget show the Verizon logo on the front bezel, together with both a front-facing webcam and a camera on the back.

According to the tipster, the slate will indeed run NVIDIA’s 1GHz Tegra 2 chipset, along with a 1280 x 800 10-inch multitouch display, 512MB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a microSD card slot. Ports include microUSB, mini-HDMI and a 3.5mm headphone socket; there appear to be docking contacts along the bottom.

As for the name under which the 10-inch slate will launch, it’s seemingly undecided whether it will be “Stingray”, “Everest” or  ”Trygon” when it hits the market in 2011.
