Android Malware Infection has the Highest Growth, Overall Infection Lower than Other Platforms

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 11:03 AM PST

AdaptiveMobile, a mobile security vendor, has stated that it has seen the highest number of mobile malware infections this year. In fact, the number of reports has grown a significant 33-percent over 2009 figures. Google’s Android platform has seen the greatest rise in infection with a four-fold increase in the number of exploits in 2010.

However, it’s not all bad news for Android. AdaptiveMobile goes on to claim that although it has seen the biggest rise in infection, Android exploits are still relatively low in comparison to other platforms.

The rise is said to be due to cyber criminals targeting what will have the highest market share in the coming years, and with Android growing heavily, it’s not surprising that’s it has been so heavily targeted.

Samsung Suspends Vibrant 2.2 Upgrade

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 10:30 AM PST

Ever since the Samsung Galaxy S (Vibrant) was updated to 2.2, users have been complaining about battery drain ultimately making their phone useless. Samsung has just released an official statement on its Facebook page stating that because of the issues, they will be temporarily suspending the update’s availability on Samsung Kies.

Their official update reads:

“We are continuing to investigate issues that some users have reported while completing the upgrade to Android 2.2. In the interim, we are taking the extra precaution of temporarily suspending the upgrade as a download from Kies. We apologize for the inconvenience and ask that clients contact 1-800-751-4078 or sh.support@samsung.com if they have any further questions."

This suspension is only for the Vibrant’s 2.2, no word yet on whether the Captivate or Fascinate have had their updates delayed.

Android 2.3 Gingerbread being pushed to AOSP Now!

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 10:13 AM PST

Google has just began pushing Android 2.3 Gingerbread to Android Open Source Project. Jean-Baptiste Queru just stated that the process of pushing the code has already started and the process as a whole should take a few hours.

To the average user this doesn’t mean much, yet. However, to the development and hacking community who use the AOSP code, such as CyanogenMod, this means they can begin development with the new 2.3 software. Also, carriers and manufacturers will now be able to start their own ports of the operating system.

Jean-Baptiste Queru’s full statement:

“Nexus S went on sale yesterday morning in the US, running Gingerbread.
Just like I did for Froyo, I'm open-sourcing the matching Android
platform source code, right after the first consumers get their hands
on it. I'm going to start literally right now, and the process will
take a few hours.

I'll give more details once the source code is available. However,
there are three aspects that you need to know ahead of time:

-As part of the process to push the source code, there will be some
points in time when the master branch doesn't build. Sorry about that.
If you're working on the master branch, I recommend that you don't
sync until I send an “all clear” when I'm done and things look good.
Other branches are expected to work fine as soon as their manifests
are created.

-Even though Nexus S is designed to be suitable for AOSP work, there
are some caveats. I very strongly recommend against trying to use
Nexus S for anything related to AOSP at the moment. Trying to unlock
or use your Nexus S for AOSP work could easily turn it into a Nexus B
(where B means “brick”); I have two of those, they're not very useful.
I'll send some guidelines about what is currently possible once I've
finished pushing the source code.

-Please take it easy on the kernel.org servers. They are very helpful
in hosting the AOSP source code, and I don't want to hurt the high
quality of their service with an onslaught of full Android downloads.
If you're not going to immediately work on porting Gingerbread to
devices with the intent of distributing the result to end-users, I'm
kindly asking that you wait a few hours or a few days before you
download it (just roll a 6-sided die and wait that long). In addition,
the slower the servers are, the harder it is for me to do the push.

Thanks for being patient.

Touiteur asked to change name by Twitter, Asks for votes for new name

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 09:55 AM PST

Touiteur, the popular Twitter client for Android, has recently been asked to change its name by Twitter themselves. According to Twitter: “Touiteur” can be seen as a misspelling of "Twitter".

Very interesting move on the Twitter team’s part, but LevelUp Studio is ready to comply. They have announced that they will be changing the name of the popular application and are asking users for suggestions and to vote for their favorites.

You can head over to their official voting page and vote for which names you like the most. My favorite: The App Formerly Known As Touiteur. The LevelUp team will let us know when a decision is made.

What do you think? Touiteur/Twitter? Too similar?

Android Honeycomb Actually 2.4, Launching in February?

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 08:07 AM PST

Despite the fact that up until now, it’s been a widespread belief that the codenamed Honeycomb update to the Android platform would be a pretty significant one, if these new rumors pan out, that may not be true at all. In fact, the Honeycomb update is now being said to be just Android 2.4, and specifically, Google is looking to hold off that 3.0 update until they’ve got something huge ready to give out.

The new rumor popped up recently, stemming from a developer that has been working on several different versions of the mobile Operating System. According to this developer, Google wants to make sure that when Android 3.0 hits, it’s a significant upgrade, and not a minor one. We’re not sure that with all of the changes that Honeycomb has in store for the user (like no physical buttons, and being tablet-centric), we’d necessarily call it a minor update, but it’s not up to us.

What may not be as surprising, though, is the timeframe that Google is supposedly looking at launching Honeycomb. According to the rumor, we could see Android 2.4 announced as early as February. That would probably mean we’d get a bit more of an official look at Motorola’s Honeycomb-powered tablet, as well as other devices running the newest version of the OS. If 2.4 is Honeycomb, then Ice Cream could indeed be 3.0.

Nexus S smartphone works after soaring to 32K meters on a weather balloon

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 06:00 AM PST

Folks from Google and some other space enthusiasts got together recently and ran an experiment with the new Samsung Nexus S smartphone to see just how well the smartphone sensors and accelerometers worked when the temperatures decreased. The test involved several smartphones and a trip to the stratosphere.

Engineers from Google and students from the University of California put the Nexus S smartphones into special coolers with GPS antennas on them, tied them to weather balloons, and then let them go. The balloons were able to reach 32,000 meters above the ground before the balloons burst and the phones started the plummeting decent.

The phones and their special coolers were brought to the ground using parachutes and the decent from height took 20 to 30 minutes. After the smartphones were retrieved, they still worked despite the extreme temperatures at the heights the balloons reached.

Vlingo adds ActionBar and more to Android app

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 05:04 AM PST

Vlingo has announced that it has updated its cool Android app. The new update adds in a new ActionBar and integrates with Kayak, Fandango, and Open Table. The app update offers some really cool new functionality.

The update means that you can use the ActionBar to type or speak search commands for any of the signs you would normally use Vlingo for. You can type or say things like “Hotels in Seattle for tomorrow night” or “Where is Tron playing tonight.”

The Kayak integration allows the app to find rooms in any US city that you can rent for the night when on business or vacation. You can also use the app for dinner reservations thanks to Open Table integration. You can say, “Where can I get a burrito” and find a close Mexican restaurant for instance. Check out the demo video below for a better idea what the new update adds.

New Android Market arrives on Samsung Galaxy Tab

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 03:56 AM PST

Google’s new Android Market has arrived on the Samsung Galaxy Tab overnight, complete with a refreshed UI – including a Cover Flow style app carousel – and new categories for Widgets and Live Wallpapers. Announced last Friday, and expected to roll out to all Android 1.6 or above devices before December is out, the new Android Market also flags up related content.

One controversial decision on Google’s part was to reduce the refund period to fifteen minutes, meaning buyers who accidentally purchase an app now have less time to return it. Still, overall it’s a marked improvement in layout and usability over the previous version.

Nexus S Gets Torn Apart by iFixit

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 06:49 PM PST

The next “Google Phone” is quite the impressive device, we have gotten our hands on the phone and it has proven to be a great upgrade from many devices hardware wise, and software wise you can’t beat Gingerbread. If you are the curious type and want to see what the internal of the Samsung Nexus S are like, iFixit has you covered with a full tear down.

Nothing is too groundbreaking in the way the device’s internals are laid out. However, the composition of the internals with the curved screen in place is of some interest. The device is just like any other phone with all components being flat and only the front panel sporting the curve. You can check out a side view of the curved front panel below, and the full tear down over at iFixit.

The device was supposed to sell out at launch because of it’s limited quantities, but that never happened. However, it’s still the impressive DROID 2, with an incredibly awesome R2D2 skin.

If you would like to see more pictures of the device you can check out our hands-on we did with the device a few months back.
