NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 Processor May Be The “Reference Design” for Honeycomb

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 06:54 PM PST

With the tablet market exploding in 2010 with the introduction of the iPad, many are now looking to different options. As of now, Android tablets are lacking, without a optimized UI, they just cannot compete with the iPad – but that is all expected to change with the release of Android (3.0/2.4?) Honeycomb. And according to a Citigroup analyst, Google has made the Tegra processor the reference design for their Honeycomb release of Android.

The NVIDIA Tegra 2 chipset which is a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 will boast speeds that we haven’t even imagined yet, pair that with Android Honeycomb and a large screen and you’ve got yourself one very impressive device.

Just as the Nexus One and its processor were the “Golden Standard,” Honeycomb’s Golden Standard will be the Tegra 2. The tablet battle of 2011 will sure be an interesting one to watch, and we will for sure keep you updated with all the latest happenings – starting with CES 2011 in January.

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 01:34 PM PST

As you might already know, DYZPlastic is the only place in the world where you can find the official collaboration with Google, Inc. to create high quality cute little plastic toys. They’ve made a blind box mini set where you can get any of 12 different designs (these are approximately 3″ tall), and now you can get just the classic green/white Android by itself with no mystery at all! Hooray!

Each of these little figures is made for display, but you sure as heck could play with them too if you really wanted to. They’ve got moving heads, moving arms, and they’re super cuties! OH and there’s a super secret edition of snowman-themed Android toys out there too, so be on the lookout for them! Would you like an artist-signed snowman? I bet you would!

Nexus S Optimized Kernel Voodoo

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 11:36 AM PST

Behold! Craziness with your Nexus S, all after you put your root down and get to business. Voodoo business. What XDA forum member supercurio says is that this is the first kernel to implement Ext4 mount options optimization as well as the first Optimized kernel for Nexus S ever. What this particular project does is to bring your Nexus S back to the pre-compiled kernel shipped on your device (or close to it.) And what’s that do? Makes it “very snappy.”

You can check out the instructions you’ll need over on [XDA forums], and don’t forget to give that guy some feedback because for goodness sakes he doesn’t even own a Nexus S yet and he’s helping the whole world to make theirs faster and more awesome. — He notes that your Quadrant score should increase from 1650 to 2420 – sound fast enough?

Grab a Lagfix for your Galaxy S Device WITHOUT Voodoo

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 11:22 AM PST

So you’ve got a Galaxy S device and you want it improved. You’d like it not only to work better, but faster. Have you taken a bite of Voodoo? Once you do, you’ll find that there’s a Lagfix that’ll replace your cruddy RFS filesystem with the Linux-standard Ext4 filesystem. What’s that do? It restores your I/O performance and overall user experience to the speeds and quality it aught to be! Now, with the help of XDA member supercurio, you can have these Ext4 speed improvements with a totally safe mount option on /data! Hooray forever!

You can take a whole big look at this situation over at XDA forums, and NOTE: this functionality is already implemented in Voodoo, so if you’re up on that, you’re already a step ahead. See [this thread] and tell us how it works for you – we got a 15% speed increase on the I/O! Ohh baby.

Motorola Planning on Releasing Two DEFY-Like Handsets in 2011

Posted: 17 Dec 2010 11:14 AM PST

As smartphones get more and more sophisticated, they tend to get more and more fragile. Android handsets are no exception, as many manufacturers are focused on overall beauty rather than durability and ruggedness. However, when Motorola released their DEFY, it completely changed everyones vision of an “Ultra-Durable Handset.”

The DEFY offered up super durability and even was waterproof, all in a touchscreen device that didn’t look like it belonged on a construction site. They seem to be continuing with the trend after the success of the DEFY and are currently said to be developing 2 rugged handsets for 2011.

The handsets will be half the price of the DEFY and will both be touch-enabled. They will not be fully waterproof but they will be resistant to the elements. More details are expected soon about these two devices and we will let you know as they are announced.

If you would like more information on the Motorola DEFY, be sure to check out our review!
