LG Ally Coming to Android 2.2 in February Posted: 24 Dec 2010 10:05 AM PST Good news for all you LG Ally users, A moderator on the LG Forum has given a certified response that confirms we will be seeing Android 2.2 Froyo on the Ally in February. ![]() The official statement reads:
Now the main question this arises is whether or not the device will run Adobe Flash Player 10.1. With a 600MHz processor, the LG Ally may come up too short to meet the hardware requirements for Adobe’s Flash. Current requirements for a WVGA device require it to be sporting at least a 800MHz processor. Unless things change come February, Ally users may be left out of one of the biggest upgrades in the Froyo update. Hopefully this will not be the case, and we see an optimized version of Flash for the Ally next year. [Via Phone Arena] ) |
Verizon Expecting to get Froyo on the Samsung Fascinate by Year’s End? Posted: 24 Dec 2010 09:44 AM PST News of the potential Android 2.2 update for Samsung Fascinate users has been quiet over the last few months. Well a tiny bit of light has been shed regarding this update, this time in an internal specs comparison sheet claiming the update will come by the end of 2010.
This spec sheet details when Adobe Flash will be available on the device, and you can’t have Adobe Flash without Android 2.2. Hopefully we will see the update in the next week, it’s definitely possible, but don’t get your hopes up. It’s worth noting that on the sheet the DROID X is listed at having Android 2.1 installed. If you recall the DROID X was updated to Froyo all the way back in September, so this specific sheet could be out of date, but we will definitely keep our eyes open for the potential update. HTC EVO Shift 4G Appears in Best Buy’s System for $150 Posted: 24 Dec 2010 09:35 AM PST 4G phones are not only getting more and more powerful, they’re also being the target of steep discounts and low entrance costs as carriers push 4G into 2011. The HTC EVO Shift 4G has now appeared in Best Buy’s system for only $149.99. ![]() The EVO Shift 4G, SKU 1768561, has still yet to be announced and will be similar to the HTC EVO 4G but will feature a full physical keyboard. The device will set you back $549.99 off contract, but it comes as a surprise that customers looking to upgrade to the device from an older phone will be charged the same $149.99 as new customers. Very reasonable pricing on what seems to be an impressive upcoming phone. [Via AndroidPolice, Thanks Jaroslav!] ) |
BenQ Announces Android-based R100 Tablet Posted: 24 Dec 2010 08:55 AM PST BenQ announced this week that it too would get involved in the world of Android-based tablets come 2011. They will will enter the market with the R100 tablet, the device will be a 10-inch tablet that will hopefully ship with Android when it’s released. ![]() The device will not be targeted at users who are looking for an ultra-poweful tablet. Instead it will focus on media consumption such as books, magazines and newspapers. It will ship with an 833MHz Samsung processor and will support stylus input for notes in Chinese writing as well as English. BenQ has not yet announced whether the screen will be capacitive or resistive, so multi-touch support is questionable. The R100 will go on sale in at least Taiwan and mainland China with pricing to be announced. However, it’s specs and BenQ’s focus on subsidization, we can expect this to be a budget option. Dell Streak 7 Pre-Production Commercial Stills Leaked Posted: 24 Dec 2010 07:15 AM PST Just a few hours after the mystery Dell tablet received its WiFi certification, a new in-production commercial has been leaked which seems to confirm a few things. ![]() First, it looks like this device is the 7-inch version of what was previously known as the Looking Glass. It seems to be production ready and will go under the safe, recognizable name of the Dell Streak 7. The leaked commercial isn’t in video form yet, it’s more in a storyboard format with captured stills and descriptions describing what will be taking place in that part of the commercial. From these stills we see the same Stage UI that was recently added to the 5-inch Streak. While “Looking Glass” was definitely a more creative name, it looks as if we will have to make due with the Streak 7. ![]() ![]() ![]() [Via SlashGear] ) |
TechCrunch Goes Hands-On with a 42-inch Nexus S Posted: 24 Dec 2010 07:03 AM PST Giant display phones are not a new thing in the world of retailers. Apple has made giant “demo” models of their iPhone, and Google even made one of the original Nexus One. As we all know, these units were simply playing a looping video showing off the software features of the devices. This Nexus S, however, does not – yes, it actually works! ![]() Google employees installed the giant display device in hopes to attract potential buyers, and with a full working 42-inch display and working camera, that won’t be such a hard task. The key to this device is that it actually is powered by a smaller Nexus S with video out capabilities inside of the unit making for the real world user interface. Currently the display unit is only available in the San Carlos Best Buy. Google plans to test how it does is the wild (durability of the screen) and if it’s successful, they plan to roll out a few more across the US. [Via TechCrunch] ) |

BenQ R100 Android tablet due Q1 2011 Posted: 24 Dec 2010 03:01 AM PST BenQ apparently intends to launch an Android-based tablet, the R100, in Q1 2011. The slate supposedly runs Android 2.2 on an 833MHz Samsung processor, and has a 10.1-inch 1024 x 600 resistive touchscreen, 8GB of storage and an HDMI port. There’s also mini USB, a microSD card slot, WiFi b/g/n and Bluetooth, and BenQ reckons the R100 will last for up to 12 hours of use on a single charge. It’ll come with a stylus, in China at least, to support handwriting recognition. BenQ is supposedly looking to put together digital content deals – including a “BenQ Book” ebook store – in time for the R100′s launch. No word on pricing at this stage. [via MP4Nation] ) |
Notion Ink Adam’s Canvas Image Editing Program Demo [VIDEO] Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:58 PM PST Hooray for the continuation of Notion Ink’s Adam tablet running some wild Android wackiness. Today there’s a drawing and image editing app “Canvas.” This is a slightly more entertaining application that’s been show in the first few videos, both drawing and editing images – the video demo below just shows the drawing bit. Get pumped up because not only is there different brush types and a fabulous selection of other tools, there’s LAYERS!
Notion Ink says this version of the app is “alpha,” letting the world know that they eventually want you to be able to do much more as the full launch of Adam works. They say this will be useful in movie creation via storyboarding – I can imaging it would be! So simple, so sweet. They intend for the app to be helpful for both pro-artists and for kids, (all of whom LOVE to paint, of course.) The clip below is at super speed, but it looks like it’s awesome nonetheless. BONUS take a look at this possible unboxing over in the Netherlands – Van Gunst has an Adam! [Via SlashGear] ) |
Notion Ink Adam Unboxing ala Van Gunst Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:41 PM PST Behold! A couple of rather blurry images of an unboxing of what appears to be a real-deal Notion Ink Adam. Who has it? A Dutch fellow by the name of Van Gunst. His explanation for having early access to the device is that he’s a developer and and the folks at Notion Ink have sent the device out to not only people like him, but to marketing folks as well. Take a look at his full explanation and more images as he’s posted on his Twitter account in a gallery below.
If you’ll take a look over at his blogspot blog, you’ll see that Van Gunst has the following to say in response to those who would ask why he’s got a Notion Ink Adam so very early compared to the rest of the people in the world who’ve got to wait another bunch of days:
Do these images look real to you? If I had to guess, I’d say I’m 80% positive. Why? Because they’ve got em up on the site, videos are out, and it’s definitely not THAT far away from the ship date – even if the device had to make its way to the Netherlands. His tweets are protected, but his YFrog account is not! — Thanks Samuel for the tip! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Nexus S in Space at 100,000 FT – with Android Toy! Posted: 23 Dec 2010 03:10 PM PST You might be aware that a few days ago some students from the University of California teamed up with Google Engineers to send a Nexus S into space. What you might not know is there’s super cute video to go with – and what went into space with the handset? At least one cute little vinyl plastic Android toy – Hooray! Check out the full video of this fun team jamming payloads 100,000 ft above the earth, handsets running Google Maps for Mobile 5.0, Google Sky Map, Latitude, and the teams own custom sensor logging app.
Google Engineers worked with UCSC student Greg Klein of a crew of students to prep each foam cooler encased payload. On each rig is a nylon load line attached to the cooler and to a radar reflector, a parachute, and a weather balloon. Each rig also has an APRS transmitter attached to a GPS and batteries for power. After that, each rig was different. Some had digital cameras for taking pics and some had video cameras mounted at different angles (up, down, and at the horizon.) The apps running on each Nexus S going up with these balloons did the following: And then there were the super cute toys! If you don’t know which toys these are, take a look at this post which’ll give you a full rundown. You can take a full peek at a video of how each of the packages were prepared here: What did they find? LOTS! Each of the boxes collected a pack of data, several of them reached pretty freaking high altitudes. The highest altitude one of these packages reached was 107,375 ft., over 20 miles high, “or over three times the height of an average commercial jet.” The fastest one of these packs went was 139 mph. Additional data is thus (straight from the Google mouth):
After analyzing the data they collected, the group found the speed and altitude of the jet stream: approximately 130mph and 35,000 ft! After each of the packages reached their top height, they of course came crashing down – but every single package was recovered (including one they sent up last week as a test.) Good job! If you’d like to see an extended gallery of images from the launch, head over to Picasaweb.
