CyanogenMod 7 Alpha hits the myTouch4G

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 09:34 AM PST

Gingerbread has started to hit multiple devices as people recompile the CyanogenMod 7 RC Alpha Zero. While the Alpha is still basically an AOSP ROM, with no CyanogenMod tweaks, it gives us all a great feeling of how it will be progressing. With the myTouch 4G recently joining the list of other HTC phones supporting Android 2.3 (EVO 4G, Incredible, Wildfire), it becomes obvious which smartphone manufacturer doesn't mind letting their users tamper with their hardware.

myTouch_Gingerbread

If you want to find out how to upgrade your myTouch 4G to Gingerbread at XDA Developers, just Click Here. XDA member option94 has started a thread with everything you need to get it up and running. It does seem fairly stable, with the only problem being Windows 7 recognizing your phone via the USB. Flash at your own risk as it does void your warrenty.

Samsung Galaxy S Devices in the US Listed as Having Android 2.2 on Samsung’s Product Page [Update]

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 07:59 AM PST

It wouldn’t be the first time, or even the second, that someone in control of a company’s website jumped the gun in one fashion or another. But, for Samsung, perhaps letting someone inform the world that devices like Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G, and Verizon’s Samsung Fascinate as having Android 2.2 right now isn’t the smartest idea. That is, of course, unless you plan on updating those devices right now.

Some eagle-eyed tipsters managed to notice that Samsung has officially listed devices like the aforementioned handsets, plus the Samsung Vibrant on T-Mobile’s network, as having Android 2.2. Of course, if you have one of those handsets, you’ll no doubt already know that you don’t have that version of Google’s mobile Operating System. Not officially, anyway. But, you’re probably well aware that places like Europe, and even Canada, do indeed have those particular updates.

What’s strange, though, are the inconsistencies. For example, AT&T’s Galaxy S device, the Captivate, is listed as having Android 2.1. Additionally, the Samsung Fascinate which just launched on Verizon, is also listed as having only Android 2.1. Does that mean that these two handsets won’t be getting the update to 2.2? And, if that’s the case, why is that the case? Hopefully Samsung has something to announce to all the US-based owners of their devices, for each network, sooner than later.

[Update] Thanks to commenter, Doug, we’ve been told that Samsung has updated their product page site, and changed the devices back to 2.1. So, looks like someone did just make a mistake, and this isn’t a sign into the future. At least, not the foreseeable future, anyway. At least we know it’s coming eventually, right?

Huawei IDEOS X5 Tech Specs Revealed

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 07:46 AM PST

At the beginning of the month, Huawei showed off a pair of their upcoming Android-powered smartphones. Unfortunately, while the image worked as a general tease, there wasn’t a lot of information tagged along for the ride. Sure, we covered the basics, but some people want to know all the little details. So Huawei was happy to oblige. They’ve officially released the technical specifications for the IDEOS X5, adding to what we already know with all of the little details some folks out there may love.

The X5 features a 3.8-inch capacitive touchscreen display, with a resolution of 800×480. It has A-GPS and an integrated compass, along with Bluetooth 2.1 connectivity with A2DP.There’s a 3.5mm audio jack as well. On the back, you’ll find a 5MP camera with autofocus, which has the ability to capture 720p video. If you’re fan of having an eReader application preinstalled, then you’ll be happy to know that Huawei has decided to throw in the Aldiko eReader. You also get all of the standard Google services, like Talk, and Gmail.

The device will run Android 2.2 out of the box, and will obviously support Flash Player 10.1. What we’re still missing on the sheet: any kind of mention of the processor under the hood. The original tease of the device had the X5 pinned for a 1GHz processor some kind, so we’ll go ahead and cling to the hope that Huawei stuck to that plan.

Cellbots app updated: video streaming, voice control, more [Video]

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 07:37 AM PST

We’ve covered Cellbots on Android Community before, an open-source way to use your smartphone as a brain for a simple robot, but the project has released a new java app which supports not only custom, Arduino-based Cellbots but iRobot Create, LEGO MINDSTORMS and VEX Pro. Requiring Android 2.2 or above, the new app allows you to either remotely control the robot using the phone as a navigation pad, or alternatively mount the phone directly onto the robot and use it as the ‘bot’s brain.

There’s support for spoken commands, streaming video and even using a second Android phone running the app to work as a remote (while the first is in brain mode). It’s a free download from the Android Market.

AppsFire Adds Video Previews for Applications, Coming to Android Market Soon?

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 07:20 AM PST

Google has been busy updating the Android Market over the last few weeks. Several changes, especially one major overhaul to the User Interface for the Market itself, have lead many to believe that even more changes are in store soon into the New Year. For AppsFire, a portal that allows users to find new and interesting applications, they’ve tapped into a change in API settings that now allows for developers to add video demonstrations of apps.

According to AppsFire, Google made the API changes recently, and the fact that they didn’t announce it, even back at the beginning of the month when they did announce changes to the Market, is the main reason more developers haven’t implemented the change. AppsFire is actually one of about 500 different applications that have taken advantage of the changes, and implemented videos to show off their applications.

Not surprisingly, Google is using YouTube to support the videos. There’s no word as to when, or even if, Google plans on adding the feature to the Android Market, but the belief is that they’ll add it soon.

Will video demonstrations help app sales increase? What do you think?

New Android Music App leaks [Video]

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:11 AM PST

Google’s next-gen Android media player app has leaked, with xda-developers offering up the apk file for the tweaked, refreshed music software along with a video of the app in action if you’re not quite brave enough to try it out on your handset. The new app has a browser more reminiscent of the gallery than the old music software, though the currently available file lacks the media streaming functionality Google showed off back at Google I/O 2010 earlier in the year.

Asus Eee Pad pics surface ahead of CES

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 06:11 AM PST

It's been a while since we talked about the Eee Pad, we first heard about the thing back in July when it was rumored to be getting Android rather than Windows. The Eee Pad is expected to debut at CES starting next week and ahead of the expected debut we have some new pics of the thing to check out.

The photos show that the device has a USB 3.0 port, a chicklet keyboard under the display, and more. The expectation is that we are looking at more of a convertible netbook running Android than a tablet like the iPad or Galaxy Tab.

You can see the Android menu buttons if you stare long enough at the pics. This should be interesting, but I think most users are really leaning towards a pure tablet today rather than a netbook device.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and LG Optimus Pad coming at CES 2011?

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:54 AM PST

If you are a big fan of the Samsung Galaxy Tab, either you will like this news or it may make you mad. Korea Times reports that the second generation Galaxy Tab may be debuting at CES next week. The only people that will make angry are the folks that have only recently purchased the original Galaxy Tab and are now faced with the prospect of a new tablet with better performance hitting the market.

The second-generation Galaxy Tab is expected to run the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, which puts dual cores inside that are faster than the Hummingbird processor inside the Galaxy Tab on the market now. The new Tab is also said to be the reference design for Android Honeycomb.

Along with the debut of the new Galaxy Tab Korea Times reports that LG will be showing off the Optimus Pad 8.9-inch Android tablet. We don't have much in the way of details yet, but the LG tablet is said to run Honeycomb. CES should be interesting for Android tablet fans.

Samsung Galaxy S2 confirmed for MWC 2011 claim reports

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:49 AM PST

Samsung has apparently confirmed that it will debut the successor to the best-selling Galaxy S at Mobile World Congress in February 2011. According to Korean news site The Chosun Ilbo, Samsung has officially acknowledged that the so-far unnamed smartphone will launch at MWC, though has stopped short of confirming specifications for the handset.

However, it’s expected to run Android 2.3 Gingerbread and include NFC wireless, as with the Samsung-made Nexus S. Samsung is also expected to slot a dual-core processor into the Galaxy S2, rather than the Galaxy S’s single-core 1GHz Hummingbird chip, together with a gyroscope.

Sony PlayStation phone coming in spring 2011 according to Japanese paper

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 03:45 AM PST

The idea of a PlayStation phone excites smartphone fans and gamers alike. We have been hearing grumblings about a new PlayStation phone from Sony Ericsson for a while now. We heard this month that the device might be called the Xperia Play and right before that we picked up a rumor that the smartphone could be landing in March.

Another rumor has surfaced that claims the PS Phone will be coming in the spring of 2011. That fits in pretty well with the March rumor we heard before. The spring 2011 date rumor comes from a report in the Japanese paper Asahi Shimbun today. According to the report, the device will be based on the PSPgo and will have the familiar gaming controls.

I can see a smartphone version of the PSPgo succeeding where the Go portable console was an epic fail. The paper says that the smartphone will go on sale first in the US and Europe when it launches. Sony has made no comment on the story other than to say it doesn't comment on rumors.

Toshiba Folio 100 firmware addresses lag, multitouch, more

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:57 AM PST

Toshiba has pushed out the promised firmware update for the Folio 100 tablet, with update v.2.2.5.0053 expected to address the responsiveness and multimedia processing issues which prompted retailer PC World to yank the slate from shelves. According to The Tech Blog, the new firmware does indeed address much of the lag.

However, reports from xda-developers suggest that this isn’t quite enough to bring the Folio 100 fully up to scratch, with the tablet still prone to going into deep sleep mode and demanding a reboot to get it working once more. The new firmware also lacks the Flash Player 10.1 plugin, which has to be installed separately.

1) screen/soft-touch responsiveness

2) lag fixes

3) Most importantly Pinch-and-Zoom capability for web-browsing and others.

4) Improved viewability (I think)

5) Smoother video/audio processing.

Cowon’s Android D3 Plenue PMP packs T-DMB and HDMI

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:18 AM PST

Cowon has outed its latest PMP, and as was rumored earlier in the year, the new Cowon D3 Plenue runs Android 2.1. Fronted by a 3.7-inch AMOLED WVGA touchscreen, the D3 Plenue has WiFi b/g, Bluetooth 2.1, an HDMI port and a T-DMB digital TV tuner.

It also has a huge list of codec support and, we’re guessing, lives up to Cowon’s tradition of audiophile-quality sound. Three versions will be on offer, in 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities (with a microSD card slot if you want to add more) but there’s no word on pricing or release dates at this stage.

Dungeon Defenders, the First Unreal Engine Based Game, Available Now

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 08:02 PM PST

It’s no surprise that gaming has made a huge shift from dedicated devices such as the Nintendo DS and PSP to mobile phones. As phones becoming more and more powerful gaming becomes more of an option as they are made able to run intensive graphics. A perfect example of this is the first Unreal Engine game for Android, Dungeon Defenders, which is now available.

Dungeon Defenders is a new 3D game that’s mixes tower defense gameplay with some RPG elements. It’s graphics are incredibly impressive for a mobile phone game and it’s definitely worth checking out. You can see a the launch trailer (iOS) below which will give you a good idea of what gameplay will be like:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The game is available for only $2.99 which is well worth it and it’s worth noting that because it comes in at over 600 MB it will take you longer than the 15 minute refund window to download it, so make sure you really want it – who wouldn’t – and that your device is suggested which is detailed below:

Suggested Devices:

Best: All Tegra 2 Based Devices
High-End: Nexus S, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Samsung Galaxy S phones
Mid-Range: T-Mobile G2, Droid X, Droid 2

Minimum Requirements:

512 MB RAM (256 free at runtime)
GPU capable of OpenGL ES 2.0
Android 2.1
800 Mhz CPU or greater recommended
SD card with at least 600 MB free storage

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 07:32 PM PST

HTC has been the leader of 4G Android Devices. They are definitely the most known probably because they have been the “first” on a per-carrier basis. They are continuing this trend with yet another first, this time on Verizon’s LTE.

The HTC Thunderbolt will be announced on January 6th at, you guessed it, CES 2011. If you would like a way to receive information directly from the source as soon as it’s made available, check out their new page featuring the email sign up program.

New Samsung Galaxy Tab Firmware Might Block Hacks

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 03:48 PM PST

Reports claim that Samsung may soon roll out a new firmware update for the Galaxy Tab that will block all jailbreaks, roots and other custom firmware. The new JM6 A, C, and D builds are all planned to prevent unauthorized firmware from running.

Developers are hoping that there will be a software workaround coming, however, a crack might require soldering or other physical methods to gain the same access as they have with the current official code. This is only present in the test firmware and it’s not currently known whether it will be present in the final releases.

Now if this software gets sent to devices this means that not only will the Samsung Galaxy Tab be locked, but it will officially be more restrictive than the iPad. Apple currently patches security holes that jailbreaks get through, but iOS is not very hard to crack, and they’re not working on making it extremely difficult.

Google has always claimed that Android is more open, however this has also lead to manufacturers lock down the hardware as much as they’d like. We will report on further information as it’s made available in the coming weeks with the impending release.

Logitech States Nothing’s Wrong with the Revue, Will attend CES 2011

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 02:50 PM PST

Since its introduction, Google TV has been a topic of speculation. Many do not know if it’s quite ready for the public because it doesn’t bring enough to the table. We have even heard that Google TV would miss CES 2011 altogether, but it seems this is not the case.

Ashish Arora has confirmed that there is nothing wrong the the Logitech Revue, and that they have plans to show off Google TV at CES in January. We also learn that Google and Logitech still have a working relationship going on. They’re both at work to improve the Google TV platform as a whole and to further update the Revue.

"Those familiar with our product know that we don't need to modify the Logitech Revue box to deliver software enhancements. Each of our customers will receive periodic over-the-air updates whenever Google and Logitech release changes to the Google TV platform. Logitech Revue boxes purchased at launch in October, as a holiday gift in December or to follow basketball in the spring, will all be the same and will all benefit from the same software updates," writes Arora.

At the end of the post, Arora states that once the holiday break is over, the Logitech Revue team will be ready to head to Las Vegas for CES 2011.

Lazik suspended from the Android Market for Trademark Infringement

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 02:15 PM PST

Google has sent an e-mail to Lazik reporting that their popular Winamp remote control has been suspended from the Android Market for trademark infringement. It was not the only remote application that has been deleted, in fact, all Winamp remote controls have been removed.

The creators of Lazik do not want to get into further troubles with AOL (the owner of Winamp) so they have decided to solve the infringement before they re-post the application.

They’re currently working hard at solving the issue and are doing all in their power to bring the popular application back to market. We’ll keep you updated as further information is made available.

Nexus S Phones to be Handed Out to Google Staff (Including Australia!)

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 01:51 PM PST

It appears that Google will be rolling out a mass giveaway of Nexus S handsets to their staff across the globe immediately if not soon, including Australia where Neither Samsung nor Google have confirmed plans to release the phone for general consumption. This massive handing-out of phones happened back with the HTC Dream and with the Nexus One in India earlier this year. The current wave of Nexus S phones on the market are marked as having 900Mhz and 2100MHz bands, as used by Optus and Vodafone in Australia for 3G reception, but not 850MHz used by Telstra – this is of course noting that the phone does work with 850MHz spectrum with slower data speeds and voice.

Australian employees will just have to wait, says Google, until their turn all the way forward in time till the first quarter of 2011. Samsung says it’s currently looking into its options for bringing Nexus S to the local market in Australia and “looks forward to sharing more details at a later stage.”
