Notion Ink Teases at More Features and HDMI Screen Capture for Adam Posted: 29 Dec 2010 11:28 AM PST The folks over at Notion Ink have set up a post apologizing for no demo video today, but promising a list of items that’ll be coming tomorrow and the next day. These items are thus: Panels, the home-screen elements, how multi-cores on Tegra will work, how processes are handled, the memory assignments, how the notifications are handled in Eden, and installation of any 3rd party application. This final bit they’ll be doing in collaboration with Freeware Lovers, a site with, yes, you guessed it, lots of free software applications made by people who love to give away their stuff. Furthermore, they promise that these new videos will be of “tremendous quality,” a dubious claim considering their not-quite-perfect videos of the past. On the other hand, we’ve got high hopes for the tablet, so we’ve got to have high hopes for this!
This message was sent out to the world by none other than Rohan Shravan himself, and we’ve got one to send back: take a peek at this, RS, it’s a video made by the people responsible for making the ROM for Android, Miui! This ROM is in its second big iteration, having only released the first a few months ago. The video is magnificent! And their product? Free. [Via NotionInk] ) |
LG U+ Selling 1000 Galaxy Tab Devices Per Day Posted: 29 Dec 2010 11:11 AM PST The Galaxy Tab has been released to the world, and it seems sales have been very impressive for LG U+. They have now released first week sales numbers, and they are averaging to over 1000 units a day. ![]() LG U+ stated that the numbers are pretty good mainly because of their aggressive entrance into the tablet market. They offer very competitive pricing plans and even offer the device for free with a 3-year contract. Only time will tell just how well the Tab will do with more normal day-to-day operations, but it looks like it’s going to be another hit for the Korean carrier. [Via SamsungHub] ) |
MIUI ROM is Back with Beta #5 and Super Pro Video Posted: 29 Dec 2010 11:04 AM PST Holy crap! Even if you have no idea how to hack your handset, even if you’ve never even considered working with an unofficial user interface for your phone, you’re gonna marvel at how amazingly pro the preview video for this custom ROM looks. First, take a look back a few months to September when we first got wind of this crazy maniac, then head below to see the brand new video for Beta #5.
This Beta release is set to be up on December 31st, and you’re going to be a humdinger. If you can speak and read Chinese, you’re in for a world of ease. If you don’t, you might have a harder time getting started. Take a ride over to the Miui Developer Forums either way and get yourself a download and make it work! Come on back to the Android Community Forums then and let us know how you’re liking it. [Via Miuirom] ) |
Olive Telecom Set to Introduce New Android-Based Handsets in 2011 Posted: 29 Dec 2010 10:53 AM PST As Android market share continues to grow in India, Olive Telecommunications is set to launch its on Android handsets in India. The handsets will be Android 2.2-based and should be shipping the first week of march. ![]() It’s said that the device will be on par to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy S devices as well as Apples iPad which means it could be sporting a larger display, possibly between a smartphone and tablet. India has witnessed intense competition lately regarding the Android operating system. Olive has been the first to the Indian market with a tablet and if these rumors are true we can expect them to use their credibility to their own advantage in the upcoming Android war. Run the Kindle App on your NOOKcolor! Posted: 29 Dec 2010 10:40 AM PST Over at BlogKindle.com, Andrei Pushkin has formulated a walk-through to help root your NOOKcolor and install the Kindle for Android application. He was even able to successfully install and run youtube, Gmail, and yes our favorite… Angry Birds!
If you haven't rooted anything before, always know that it usually voids your warranty, and you chance bricking your device rendering it unusable forever. The whole process only took Pushkin approximately 5 minutes to complete; he described the transformation as overall adding value to both the Kindle and NOOKcolor. If you would like to give this a go, just click here and remember to follow his directions precisely. [Via BlogKindle] ) |
Samsung Galaxy S2 the next Google Nexus S? Posted: 29 Dec 2010 09:26 AM PST The Samsung Galaxy S2 may not just be a face-lift from the Google Nexus S. The new phone is expected to have all of the bells and whistles as the attractive Nexus S, but exhibit a dual core processor as well. It will be running (at least) Android 2.3, but with the skinned modifications we see on every Galaxy S device.
This definitely seems like a case of deja vu seeing as the same incident happened between the Google Nexus One and HTC Desire; the Desire nearly having the same hardware as the Nexus One. When it comes down to it, deciding which phone to purchase will solely determine if the user prefers an unmasked version of the Android OS or one cloaked in a Galaxy S fashion. [Via TechRadar] ) |
Verizon to focus on Android not a new iPhone at CES Posted: 29 Dec 2010 06:12 AM PST Much of the talk about Verizon and new smartphones tends to center on the long running rumor that the carrier is set to get its own version of the iPhone. Many people are hoping that when CES kicks of next week that Verizon will be showing off a new iPhone for its network. Reports are now coming in that an iPhone at CES for Verizon will not happen.
According to these reports, Verizon will instead focus on its very popular Android smartphones at the show. Verizon has stated that it will be offering a peek at its 4G LTE Android devices at the show during its news conference. Android fans will be much more excited to see LTE Android devices than any iPhone from Verizon. The CES conference from Verizon with the new LTE devices being shown will be webcast for anyone to watch on January 6. Via Informaiton Week ) |
New details on PlayStation app for Android surface Posted: 29 Dec 2010 03:56 AM PST We mentioned a few weeks back that an official PlayStation app was coming to Android devices (and to the iPhone). The app sounded cool, but it isn't intended to allow players to actually play any games. The point of the app is to keep you updated with the online status of your pals and to give you information on all the games on the PlayStation platform among other things.
Some new details on the app have surfaced. We originally expected the PS app to hit before Christmas and that didn't happen. Apparently, the app will be coming at any time now. A few more details on the app have surfaced with word that a future update will bring the app the ability to stream music and video from online services. The app still hasn't been announced for US Android users or Android users in other parts of Europe outside the initial launch areas of the UK, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and The Netherlands. The first update for the app to version 1.1 will reportedly bring access to more countries with Russia, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Portugal, Norway, and Poland specifically noted. I hope that US fans will get the app with that update as well. Via SonyInsider ) |
SBN Tech bringing new Android videophone to CES Posted: 29 Dec 2010 03:32 AM PST CES is a magical time of the year for geeks with new gadgets and gizmos hitting the market in force. Some of the gadgets are junk that we just don't want and others are really cool products that try to forge new markets. A company called SBN Tech has announced that it will be bringing a new video phone to CES 2011 that runs the Android OS that sounds more like a tablet to me.
The phone is called the IP Video Phone and will provide features that are sort of like those of a tablet computer. It will offer Skype, email, Think-Free Office apps, Twitter and Facebook integration, plus access to YouTube and internet radio along with a lot more. The video phone has a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1024 x 600 and it has a front mounted camera for video calls. The company isn't specific on which version of Android the machine runs citing Android 2.x as the OS. It has a SD card slot for storage and a kickstand on the back for propping it up. Pricing and availability are unknown at this time. ![]() ![]() |
Nokia name-checked as Android Honeycomb tablet producer Posted: 29 Dec 2010 03:19 AM PST A casual name-drop in a report on Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablets has led to suggestions that Nokia is working with Google on an Android device. DigiTimes claims Google has been giving priority to brand-name handset manufacturers with support for the tablet-centric Honeycomb release, bypassing notebook makers in the process, but Nokia is in among the list of “smartphone players” supposedly working with the search giant. It’s most likely an oversight by DigiTimes’ writers, but the remaining players on the list - Motorola, Samsung, LG and HTC – are all companies we’ve heard Android tablet rumors about in the past. A similar casual mention pre-holidays tipped Honeycomb for a March 2011 release; now the site is claiming some smartphone manufacturers could have slates running the platform out as early as the latter half of February next year. ) |
Sony Ericsson’s 1GHz XPERIA mini pro replacement leaks Posted: 29 Dec 2010 02:24 AM PST Another new Sony Ericsson smartphone has been spotted, with the unnamed Android slider spotted giving up its benchmark secrets in Chinese forum IT168. Rumored to be a replacement to the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 mini pro, the handset is powered by a 1GHz processor with the Adreno 205 GPU, and has a 3.0-inch 320 x 480 multitouch display. As for that benchmarking, the Sony Ericsson scores 1,553 in Quadrant and 42.5fps in Neocore. In fact the only real annoyance is the flipped button layout on the front, though we’re sure most buyers would be willing to overlook that whenever the new handset gets official. [via Engadget] ) |
Fans of Angry Birds Blocking Ads on Android Version VS Ads Not as Prevalent as at Launch Posted: 28 Dec 2010 09:55 PM PST It appears that the folks over at Reddit have had their fill of the ads up in the right corner of the Android version of Angry Birds. Is this your situation, too? Have you had a look at both versions of the game (iOS and Android) and have become peeved that your completely free version has a big fat banner up in the corner blocking some of your play? Or have you payed your way into the full version, sans ads? Or what about the third option – have you noticed the ramping DOWN of ads in recent days?
Take a peek at your Android device right now and see how long it takes for an ad to pop up in the corner in the original version, then take another break to see how long (if ever) it takes for an ad to pop up in the Holidays edition. Your humble narrator had a wait of about 7 minutes and 5 minutes of play on two different devices (not that that’d matter so much, as the game is essentially the same on all Androids,) and Ben from SlashGear said to us just a moment ago that his wait was about 5. Remember when Angry Birds was first released (to mad downloads) on Android? Ads basically constantly. What does this all mean?! Take a peek back at an article written by Dylan today by the title Angry Birds Creator Talks Android Fragmentation and Strategy – then think about the madness of the Redditors. Perhaps Rovio is pulling back in hopes of bringing in more customers for Angry Birds 2? What do you think, Community? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
Motorola Cliq 2 for T-Mobile Images Leak Posted: 28 Dec 2010 05:58 PM PST With HTC’s Android-based hands finding their way onto the Internet before any official announcements, it’s time for Motorola’s turn. This time around, it’s the formerly known Begonia device. Better known now, though, as the Motorola Cliq 2. As anyone should expect, this device is making its way to T-Mobile in the United States some time in 2011, and it’s bringing along for the ride a full physical keyboard, and full MOTOBLUR integration.
The device will feature a new hardware keyboard, looking something like an orange spider-web, along with a 5MP camera on the back of the device, paired with an LED flash. You’ll find the standard features, like integrated GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and WiFi b/g/n. There’s rumors that the device will also support WiFi calling, too. CellPassion has it that the device will also feature new MOTOBLUR widgets, along with a new version of the mobile OS. No word on whether or not the device will launch with Android 2.2 or 2.3. Motorola will more than likely have something to say about the Cliq 2 at CES 2011, and rumored release date is pegged for January 19th. [via CellPhoneSignal] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
HTC EVO Shift 4G Releasing January 9th for $150, According to RadioShack Posted: 28 Dec 2010 05:49 PM PST Not really a surprise here. Word had it that the HTC EVO Shift 4G, the smaller cousin of the original EVO 4G with a physical keyboard, would be landing in stores on January 9th, and now according to a RadioShack flier, that can be pretty much assumed to be true. As for the pricing? We already knew it was going to be $150, too.
Of course, things could change. However, considering the smaller stature, even with the addition of the physical keyboard, the $150 price tag is probably a good spot for HTC and Sprint to aim this device. We’ll have to wait a bit longer for HTC to officially unveil the device, but with the 9th creeping up on us, we probably don’t have to wait that much longer. Anyone actually interested in picking this device up? [via AndroidCentral] ![]() ![]() |
HTC Thunderbolt on Verizon TWELVE PHOTOS Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:17 PM PST You might already know that HTC will be the “first to 4G… again,” but what you might not know is that this phone that’s doing the deed is called the HTC Thunderbolt, and that just a few minutes ago TWELVE big fat photos of the handset were released into the wild Take a look below at this phont that looks basically exactly like the Desire HD but the insides – oh the insides! They will be so quick.
This phone will be fully unveiled next week at CES, but you’re free to take a peek at it here. It might not have a dual-core processor, but then again, who knows? And take a look at that kickstand – WITH GOOGLE! Can this possibly mean there’ll be no built-in Bing? Oh gee! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Via DroidLife] ) |
ADW Launcher EX Released: Silky Smooth Posted: 28 Dec 2010 01:43 PM PST We all know how many home screen replacements continue to hit the android market, a whopping 36 and counting. Each with their own levels of functionality and cosmetic differences, they suit our devices up to meet our own personal needs. Ander Webbs has released his latest home screen replacement ADW Launcher EX for the low, low, lovely price of $3.30.
It adds excellent smooth scrolling, something that was just missing from the previous versions. Also added was a 3D application drawer with 5 unique styles and desktop navigation animations, features not yet offered by my previous favorite, LauncherPro. Another great improvement is the ability to rename each individual icon whatever the user wants, for instance the Messaging app's "Messaging" can be changed to "Texts". If you are familiar with HTC Sense, you may have stumbled upon the ability to make desktop “Presets” for either work, school, recreation etc. ADW Launcher EX takes this handy tool and implements it just as Sense UI did. All in all, this homescreen replacement functions great. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() [Via Lifehacker] ) |
HTC Desire HD gets FCC approval, North American 3G Radios Inside Posted: 28 Dec 2010 12:39 PM PST Just over a week from today we first saw a device that was said to be the HTC Desire HD for Telus Canada. Now the device has hit the FCC, this time with North American WCDMA 3G radios. ![]() The device that just received approval is model PD98120, and it supports WCDMA Bands II and V. This means the device could be used on the AT&T, Bell, Telus and Rogers networks. ![]() This all but confirms our hopes for a Telus-branded HTC Desire HD, and with FCC approval we can expect it to hit the network here soon. Android Market Statistics Released from AndroLib Posted: 28 Dec 2010 12:26 PM PST Google’s approach to application distribution hasn’t been as successful as Apple’s approach thus far, but it had to start somewhere. Many curious Android users are probably wondering just how well the Android Market is preforming as well as growth and download statistics, well wonder no more, AndroLib has just published their latest data which includes some detailed information on the Marketplace. ![]() You can check out the gallery below for their findings. From them, we learn just how fast the Android Market is expanding, in just over a year we have seen exponential growth in applications available in the market. You can also check out the distribution of Free vs. Paid applications in the market which seem to math up perfectly to what Angry Birds creator, Peter Vesterbacka stated about paid applications not being a viable option for Android at this time. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
