US Update: Xbox 360, Tap Tap Revenge 4, Motorola Honeycomb tabletKicking off your holiday week, it's the best in tech from this side of the globe. In today's US Update we bring you news on the new SanDisk Xbox 360 USB flash drive, the launch of Tap Tap Revenge 4 for iOS, the latest on Yahoo's Delicious shutdown, a new video for the Motorola Honeycomb tablet and more.

First up, SanDisk has released two Xbox 360 USB flash drives, an 8GB and 16GB model. Both drives include an exclusive character for Kinectimals and a one month subscription to Xbox Live. The fourth installment in the Tap Tap Revenge franchise, Tap Tap Revenge 4 is now available fore free on iOS. The new version includes a new arcade game mode, Game Center support and graphics optimized for the Retina display.

Yahoo has released a statement regarding the reported closure of social bookmarking site, Delicious. It looks like the Twitter campaign to save Delicious paid off and Yahoo is currently shopping the site for a buyer. All existing accounts and data will remain safe and migrated to the new owner.

Microsoft has made a bold move in the world of software piracy by ending the Office Genuine Advantage program. The company has not announced what the future for Office piracy holds, but they are evaluating some new options. For now, the 25-character product key will remain the only security measure.

Last up this morning is a video released by Motorola, outing their Android Honeycomb tablet set to be released in January at CES 2011 in Las Vegas. The video slams both the iPad and Galaxy Tab, but does Motorola's Tegra 2-powered tablet have what it takes to compete in the tablet market? We'll find out soon enough.

That wraps up things this fine morning from the states. Thanks for spending your morning with us as we break the headlines fresh off the press from our side of the world. Until tomorrow, this is Nick saying over and out.

Motorola video teases Honeycomb tablet, slams Galaxy Tab and iPad

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 06:00 PM PST

Motorola video teases Honeycomb tablet, slams Galaxy Tab and iPadMotorola has released a video showing the evolution of tablet and hints at their upcoming CES Honeycomb tablet announcement. Not exactly a team player, the upcoming Motorola tablet teaser video calls the iPad "a giant iPhone" and the Samsung Galaxy Tab "Android OS… for a phone".

We've always considered Android devices to be brothers in arms, but judging by the video (seen below), we're not exactly sure Motorola shares this belief. The Tegra 2 powered Motorola Honeycomb tablet (Android 3.0) looks great on paper, but real world performance remains to be seen. For now Apple and Samsung have the sales figures to demonstrate their dominance in the tablet market, will Motorola change their positions?

One thing is for sure, at CES 2011 in Las Vegas this January we'll have the answer. We'll be on hand to put the Motorola Honeycomb tablet through its paces, so stay tuned.

Microsoft axes Office Genuine Advantage program

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 05:00 PM PST

Microsoft axes Office Genuine Advantage programIt's official, the Microsoft Office Genuine Advantage program is officially retired. According to the Redmond camp, the program has served its purpose and it's no longer needed to check whether customer are running legal copies of Office. Is this the end of Microsoft Office piracy protection or does Microsoft has an ace up its sleeve?

Somewhere a group of software pirates sharing hordes of Microsoft torrents are celebrating. The news that Microsoft was ending the Office Genuine Advantage program is simply shocking. Officially, Microsoft offered the following response via email to ComputerWorld, “The program has served its purpose and thus we have decided to retire the program.”

Starting back in 2007, Microsoft required all users to validate their copy of Office with OGA. In 2008 they began nagging users with pop ups reminding they needed to upgrade their counterfit copies. The news that the program has been retired may be bittersweet, Microsoft is reportedly making "several new investments" that will allow them to "engage with customers and help victims of fraud".

Certainly we don't expect Microsoft to slow their efforts to prevent privacy, after all at the end of the day it has a significant impact on their bottom line. How the company plans to attack the growing problem of piracy is the real question. For now, OGA links redirect to the Windows 7 main page and Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) has been renamed Windows Activation Technologies (WAT).

Current Microsoft Office Users, both PC and Mac, will continue to be required to enter their 25-character product key on installation. For now, that will be the extent of Microsoft's piracy prevention, at least until the next generation of Genuine Advantage products begin to ship in future version of Office.

Let us know what you think about Microsoft's move to end the Office Genuine Advantage program? Do you think a similar step should be taken for Windows 7? Is a genuine product key really enough protection to stop the piracy of software? Sound off!

Yahoo on Delicious shut down: not so fast!

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 04:00 PM PST

Yahoo on Delicious shut down: not so fast! The leaked screenshot that spurred debate over whether Yahoo would close several of their web properties this year has suddenly taken a turn. Yahoo has come forward to clarify the purported decision to close social bookmarking site, Delicious.

The media has not taken kindly to Yahoo's decision to lay off 600 workers and close several key web properties. In fact, users of Delicious found the news quite disturbing and began voicing their opinions online almost immediately. A Twitter campaign to 'save Delicious' quickly followed and judging by Yahoo's official response, it may have worked.

Originally Yahoo claimed that, "we continuously evaluate and prioritize our portfolio of products and services, and do plan to shut down some products in the coming months….We will communicate specific plans when appropriate". The tides have turned, as you can see by visiting the official Delicious blog. The company is now reassuring users that the site is being shopped around and that no account information data will be lost in the acquisition process.

Yahoo on Delicious shut down: not so fast!

Despite the support from fans, not everyone is optimistic about the future of the social bookmarking site. TechCrunch blogger Jon Orlin, a Yahoo employee for five years, claims he isn't suprised by Yahoo's inability to develop Delicious. He went on record to say "…when you have 'the biggest collection of bookmarks in the universe' in a potentially very social product and you can't figure out how to run it in a lean, innovative and profitable way, it's a real sign you are in trouble."

The future for Delicious remains very much in question, but one thing is for certain — Yahoo is giving the site one last hoorah in hopes of finding a new owner. If acquired, the new owner will have a daunting task if it hopes to bring the service back to the forefront of social bookmarking, but it's clear there are plenty of users who will continue to support the service.

What do you think of the news on Delicious? Has Yahoo made the right move to sell the company and are you worried about the possible data that could be compromised in the acquisition of the site? Let us know what you are thinking.

New Tomb Raider game redefines Lara CroftA Tomb Raider reboot is looming, and if Eidos head honcho Ian Livingstone is to be believed, it’s going to be special. Very special. Earlier today we sat down with the Eidos Life President who exclusively told us to “Prepare to be blown away” by Lara’s upcoming adventure.

The all-new Tomb Raider, revealed for the first time just a couple of weeks ago, promises to redefine the series and restart the franchise from humble beginnings, as Lara finds herself shipwrecked and fighting for survival.

In an exclusive interview with Electricpig Ian Livingstone OBE praised its developer, Crystal Dynamics and told us to expect something we’ve never seen before… even if he wouldn’t let slip exactly what is in store. “What I’ve seen has been amazing,” Livingstone teased.

“Crystal for me are one of the best developers in the world. All their effort, all their resources are going into Lara Croft, Tomb Raider and nothing else. You’re going to be just surprised. Prepare to be blown away by what you see.”

Samsung bada 2.0 apes Android with NFC skills

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 09:05 AM PST

Samsung bada 2.0 has just been announced on Samsung’s home turf of South Korea, and it’s packing some nifty updates. Top of the list? Near Field Communication (NFC) skills for contact free payments and whatnot, just like Android 2.3 on the Samsung built Google Nexus S Android phone.

We thought Samsung bada was a low key but enjoyable OS on the Samsung Wave when it launched in the Summer, and now it’s set to get a big update to Samsung bada 2.0. Top of the changelog is a new SDK for developers, carrier billing, third party social network integration, and NFC.

NFC is used in technology like the London Underground Oyster system to make contact free payments, and has just been introduced to Android 2.3. Once again, it appears Samsung is cribbing from Google, but we’re not complaining: the more handsets with NFC built in, the quicker we can start paying for our coffee without having to pull out our wallet. Samsung’s claiming it’ll ship 10m Samsung bada handsets in the first half of next year, so fingers crossed it’ll be soon.

Unfortunately, there’s no word of when we’ll be seeing Samsung bada 2.0, or devices running it, but we’d expect to hear and see more at Mobile World Congress in February.

Gangsters, Legacy of Kain sequels on the way?

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 09:04 AM PST

Still reminiscing about the mystical adventuring antics in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 2? Cross your fingers and hope for a sequel because Eidos boss Ian Livingstone OBE says he wants it to happen.

In an interview with Electricpig, Eidos Life President Ian Livingstone said: “There are two titles I’d like to see make a comeback. One would be Gangsters. Another one would be Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver,”

Legacy of Kain, which also appeared on the ill-fated Dreamcast before its PS2 sequel has remained a much-fancied franchise but has yet to be given the kiss of life by developers. Gangsters, which appeared on PC, slightly less so but it seems to have won a place in Livingstone’s heart. Which of the two would you like to see most? Let us know in the comments section below.

2012 Ford Focus: Interior made from recycled denim

Posted: 20 Dec 2010 08:21 AM PST

A denim interior? You'd be forgiven for thinking the new 2012 Ford Focus was designed in the 80s, but rather it represents the cutting edge of 21st century recycling technology.

The all-new Ford Focus, which hits forecourts early next year, uses cotton reclaimed from recycled trousers to back its carpets and insulate bodywork. Those jeans you threw away when they dropped out of fashion? They could soon be keeping motorway noise at bay as you thunder down the M6.

"The good news is these jeans didn't end up in a landfill, nor did we use the water, fertiliser and land to grow virgin cotton," explained Carrie Majeske, Ford's product sustainability manager. "It's an alternative that our customers can appreciate, it's cost effective, and it's better for our planet. These are the kinds of sustainable solutions we are looking for in all our vehicles."

The decision to recycle denim into its cars is part of Ford's greener, jeaner environmental strategy. It joins other innovations, such as using soy in its foam seat cushions, recycled resins for underbody systems, recycled yarns on seat covers and natural-fiber plastic for interior components.

Each 2012 Ford Focus will contain the same amount of recycled denim as two pairs of "average-sized" jeans, Ford told us. What next? Sequined trousers turned into rear view mirrors? At this rate, we wouldn't rule it out.
