US Update: Apple TV, Windows Phone 7, Playstation Phone Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:00 PM PST
First up, Apple has announced that it expects to sell over one million Apple TVs later this week. In the Q4 2010 conference call, Steve Jobs confirmed they had sold 250,000 units since launch so this week sales data is a serious step in the right direction. Microsoft has come forward to confirm they've sold over 1.5 million Windows Phone 7 handsets in just six weeks since launch. Compared to the original iPhone 4 which took 74 days back in 2007, Windows Phone 7 is looking like a possible home run for the Redmond company. Opera Software has released their annual State of the Mobile Web report, proving that Google has become more popular than Facebook. Also included in their report is a breakdown of the top ten mobile handsets globally. Nokia dominates the list, but surprisingly the Apple iPhone 4 has broken into the top five. The Sony Ericsson LiveView micro display is simply a great gadget, in fact its a perfect holiday stocking stuffer. We've put together a list of the most popular third-party plug-ins to help you get the most out of your new toy. We've also got the scoop on the January update which promises to fix some of the pairing issues with non-Sony Ericsson handsets. Last up this morning is news on the Playstation Phone. A patent filing earlier this year has several sites reporting the phone will be called Xperia Play at launch. The device will be announced in February at Mobile World Congress and it will go on sale starting April. That wraps up things this fine morning from the states. Thanks for spending your morning with us as we break the headlines fresh off the press from our side of the world. Until tomorrow, this is Nick saying over and out. Related posts:

Playstation Phone to be called Xperia Play, launching April? Posted: 21 Dec 2010 06:00 PM PST
According to "sources" close to gadget site Pocket-Lint, the Sony Ericsson Playstation Phone will be formally known as Xperia Play. The site is also reporting that the phone will be announced in February at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2011) and not CES this January. Following the announcement, it is expected that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play would hit retail shelves starting as soon as April. Whether you call it the Playstation Phone, Zeus Z1, or Xperia Play, the phone certainly exists. When launched, the Xperia Play will make use of the Sony-branded Android Marketplace. The real question is whether the proprietary marketplace can compete with the likes of iOS and the existing Android Market. Additional research into Sony Ericsson patent filings has surfaced several other possible names for the Playstation Phone: Xperia Arc, Xperia duo and Xperia Neo, as first reported by Engadget. While Xperia Play sounds nice, it is entirely possible that the Playstation Phone could use any of the aforementioned names. For now, we offer you a recap of everything we know, spec-wise, on the Playstation Phone: The device will run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), the screen is 4-inches, the dedicated Playstation store has a Playstation icon in applications, Qualcomm's Neocore benchmark app reported 24.4 frames per second (Nexus S scored 55.6fps), 512MB of internal storage with 8GB microSD card included and it is slightly thicker that the HTC Touch Pro2. We'll cross our fingers in hopes that the phone is on hand at CES in at least demo form. If not it looks like we'll have to sit tight until February when Mobile World Congress rolls around. Is anyone else excited about the Xperia Play / Playstation Phone / Zeus Z1? Coming Soon | Sony Ericsson | TBD Related posts:

Sony Ericsson LiveView: the official third party app list Posted: 21 Dec 2010 05:00 PM PST
According to Sony Ericsson, the idea behind the LiveView micro display was to "leverage on 3rd party innovation" by letting developers create plug-ins. The Sony Ericsson Product Blog contributor Rikar Skogberg has compiled what looks to be the first comprehensive list of plug-ins currently available in the Android Market for LiveView. Here's the list:
Odds are there's at least a plug-in or two that you'll find very useful in this list. In other Sony Ericsson LiveView news, Skogberg has confirmed that a software update will be coming to the micro display in January and it should be available through the SE Update Service. The reports that some users are having problems using their LiveView with non-Sony Ericsson devices should be addressed in the January update. Out Now | Sony Ericsson | £49.99 Related posts:

Google knocks Facebook from mobile web throne Posted: 21 Dec 2010 04:00 PM PST
There's more than 80 million Opera Mini users worldwide. Using data collected based on their browsing habits we now have your top ten global mobile website list for November 2010, here's the top five: (1) google.com (2) facebook.com (3) vkontakte.ru (4) youtube.com (5) odnoklassniki.ru Twitter, while not breaking into the top ten, did have a huge year compared to 2009, jumping eight places to a #13 ranking. The microblogging service will be a website to watch in the 2011 report, along with the rise of Orkut, heavily used in Brazil. In addition to data on global mobile websites, the State of the Mobile Web also includes details on which mobile handsets are most popular. Taking the top four positions were handset from Nokia, followed by the Apple iPhone 4 in the fifth spot. The remaining five positions in the top 10 list were also from Nokia, a clear sign of their dominance in global mobile sales. Here's the complete top ten list for global mobile handsets: Nokia 5130 XpressMusic, Nokia 2700c, Nokia 6300, Nokia 2690, Apple iPhone 4, Nokia 2330c, Nokia 2730c, Nokia N70, Nokia C3, Nokia 5310 XpressMusic. Of all the devices listed in the top ten, the iPhone 4 is the biggest surprise. Nokia is clearly the dominant force behind Opera Mini so the question must be asked — are Nokia users switching to the iPhone 4? Here in the states, out of all the iPhone 4 users I know, not one uses Opera Mini. Nokia devices are also quite rare compared to other markets, namely Europe, where they are extremely popular. Let us know your thoughts on the top ten global mobile websites and mobile handsets for November 2010. Do you think Facebook will regain the crown from Google in 2011 and what are your thoughts about the iPhone 4 breaking into the top five? Where are all these iPhone 4 Opera Mini users coming from? Windows Phone 7: 1.5 million units sold in first six weeks Posted: 21 Dec 2010 03:00 PM PST
The news comes by way of an interview with Achim Berg, Microsoft's vice president of business and marketing for Windows Phones. Officially, Berg went on record to say, "We are pleased that phone manufacturers sold over 1.5 million phones in the first six weeks, which helps build customer momentum and retail presence." A lot has changed since 2007 when the original iPhone went on sale. Today, Android activates a reported 300,000 units per day — a staggering number, but understandable given the global footprint through carrier contracts. Apple on the other hand, activates 275,000 iOS devices and some days over 300,000 (based on Q4 2010 conference call with Steve Jobs). Compared to the current sales date for Android and iOS, Windows Phone 7 has a long way to go before being considered a formidable competitor. For now, the results remain impressive and the launch is widely considered a success. We give Microsoft credit, it's not everyday that a mobile OS is willing to re-invent itself. The steps Microsoft took to turn Windows Phone 7 into fresh face are starting to pay off. A growing app market and thousands of developers will only continue to help this cause. It's a little too early to tell whether Windows Phone 7 will be a challenger to Android and iOS, but 2011 will be the year our questions are answered. What do you think about the Windows Phone 7 sales data? Is 1.5 million units sold in six weeks enough to make you consider a WP7 device as your next smartphone purchase? via ZDNet Related posts:

Google Voice in Gmail: free calls extended Posted: 21 Dec 2010 07:27 AM PST
Google said: “In the spirit of holiday giving and to help people keep in touch in the new year, we're extending free calling for all of 2011.” That means that come the holiday season, a little fiddle with your Gmail settings means free calls to relatives and friends in the US. Google Voice in Gmail was meant to be just for making calls inside the US, but we found that just changing your location (and sacrificing UK spellcheck) meant that you could place calls into the US for free from the UK. Good news? Tell us in the comments! ![]() |
