A Little Mid-Century Mixed with Asian

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:16 AM PST

This Basic Dining Chair is inspired by the Korean letter shape “Zi-Ut.” There’s a playful balance between traditional Asian forms and Dutch mid-century cues. There’s something Eames-ish about it too and it’s one of those chairs that looks good from every angle. Just check out that profile. Gorge!

Stainless Steel and Bronze

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:11 AM PST

Designer Dan McCabe describes his “Two Faced” coffee table as strikingly modern and I totally agree. The juxtaposition between the austere stainless steel and ornate silicon bronze frame is very unique. There’s something creepy about it. Can’t quite put my finger on it but it beckons to be touched. Color me impressed. 16″ H X 52″ W X 20″ D

Hear Me Out, V-MODA Crossfade Review

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:00 AM PST

I have earbuds from V-MODA so when they sent me the Crossfade headphones, I already knew I’d be dealing with quality. True to the brand, these bad boys look like no other. Their armored appearance instantly gives you that “I’m so serious about my music” look. Build quality is great for a $200 pair of headphones too. They’re heavier than your typical fare but are fully adjustable with very soft cushions. In fact they’re so thickly padded, they’re great for noise canceling. But how do they sound? Hit the jump for my review.

Audio fidelity is full and rich. The bass can sound a bit muddy if you love music with a lot of thump but slight equalizer adjustments can quickly remedy that. The highs sounds pretty stable even with the volume turned up. The mids are very crisp. They’re no Bowers & Wilkins but unless you’re an audiophile, you’re not going to notice.

V-MODA don’t skimp on packaging either. The Crossfades come in a hardshell pack that look as if they were molded from plaster. Inside you’ll find two braided audio cords and a 1/4″ converter. One of the cords have integrated controls designed specifically for the iPhone. They feel solid and work well. They also worked on a couple of Android devices though not officially supported.

Headphones usually look utilitarian or retro. The Crossfades sit at the other end of the spectrum – for the fashion conscious. The design definitely makes you stand out and they come in an awesome array of color ways. We have the black and chrome but the white looks particularly sexy. Final verdict? Highly recommended. Any of you already own the Crossfade?

Power Lending

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 01:05 AM PST

You’ve got something important to do but your batteries are almost out of power. We’ve all been there and each of us has discovered ways to milk every ounce of power out of our devices. I’ve found power cycling my iPhone gives it a few more minutes, but what if someone could give your device a jumpstart? The Jump-Start CARD lets one device siphon off power from another. Yea, can’t decide if this is really useful.

Bag That Iron

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 01:00 AM PST

Irons are either streamline and sleek or compact and portable. A handful are retro but the Ironbag goes one further and borrows from a woman’s handbag. It’s not the latest Balenciaga but the curious bag-like shape ingeniously tucks everything into one fashionable unit. It’s up to you to decide whether or not it’s sexist. Irons, women’s handbags? Hmm…

Nairobi Complex Deluxe

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 12:03 AM PST

Most of the projects we post here at Yanko Design are posted due to both their excellence and their status as a conceptual project (aka, only in your mind, my young padawan.) Sometimes, on the other hand, we get a project submitted that’s right along on its way toward becoming a real live object or construction. This just happens to be one of those: designer Tamir Addadi presents a complex of offices, shops, and gardens being built right this moment in Nairobi Kenya.

First of all, the location of this office: along a major road in Nairobi with a constant flow of pedestrians and autos. The building has a garden surrounding and running up the sides of it (more on this in a moment), has underground parking, shopw and cafes on the ground level, and offices on the higher ups.

The building is built as an open book system. For maximum flexibility, each user chooses their private space from a selection of several divisions and colors. As new offices are added, the facade of the building changes, and the surrounding garden walls grow. As each user decides on their area for an office, so too do they choose where the red rings of the balcony will be positioned and what type of greenery they’ll employ. As you’ll see in the video below, a layer of dirt is added near the edge of the balcony for irrigation and so that the plants might have a place to grow.

The outdoors areas are extensions of the offices, acting as a place to relax and sit in the sun. These areas are of the sort that’d basically never work in any other part of the world as Nairobi is one of those places that has constant mild weather. Very nice! Wireless internet runs through the whole of the building, meetings can be held in large gardens on the ground near the cafes and restaurants and on the roofs of the inner buildings, each of these rooftop gardens featuring their own kitchenette and sitting area.

Because this complex is so open to the street and surrounding areas, it invites in passers by and encourages them to use this multi-functional environment for events and interactions, to shop, or just to relax with a nice cold drink. For security, (since Nairobi is a high-crime area,) this building is exactly the thing criminals tend to avoid the most: a wide open space watched over by masses of people all the time. Well played – but better watch out for pickpockets.

Finally, to keep the budget low on this project, it’s being constructed using local technology and materials, this complex costing less than a typical office building of the same size.

Tea to Perfection

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 12:02 AM PST

There are few people on this planet who really know what a perfect cup of tea tastes like. I imagine I’m one of them, after reading the process this designer explains in telling us about this new project by the name of “The Perfect Cup.” The designer, Callum Kenny, informs us that 64 million cups of tea are enjoyed every 24 hours. Of those masses of cups, how many have taken time and care enough to create the perfect cup? Not many, I bet.

Kenny notes that there are four parts essential to any perfect cup of tea: the glass carafe, the three glass temperature bulbs, the tea caddy and filter. Each of these is included in this project. Using none other than the principles of the Galileo thermometer, each of the three bulbs show the optimum brewing temperature. Each of the three bulbs works to show a different temperature, the user of this project choosing the correct bulb for the kind of tea they’d like to drink.

Next, the user collects the loose leaf tea they’ve chosen, measuring it from the tea caddy into the filter, observing the changing color of the water in the carafe as they do so. The water darkens to the liking of the user, and the user can remove the filer and enjoy!
