Verizon’s Galaxy Tab Now $499 With $60 in Movie Rentals Posted: 01 Jan 2011 11:38 AM PST Great news to everyone who waited to buy the Galaxy Tab until the new year, Verizon has just officially dropped the price of the tablet to $499. Verizon has just started switching out displays in store that will reflect the new pricing. ![]() But that’s not all, with a purchase of the Tab the customer will receive $60 worth of free movies from the Media Hub or Blockbuster app. Quite the deal to start of the new year! Also, it’s worth noting that customers who have purchased the Galaxy Tab within the last 14 days can get a refund of $100, so head back to the store for your New Year’s refund! [Via DroidLife] ) |

Happy New Year from Your Friends at Android Community! Posted: 31 Dec 2010 10:34 PM PST Joy un 2 the new year! We’re here with our fabulous technology watching a double live stream of the New York Times Square ball drop event. Both of the streams we’re watching are courtesy of the Toshiba end of the camera – it was the first live stream we found when searching for the event trying to see it live online, and it just happened to be a featured app in the Android Marketplace. The app had a bunch of features that allowed us to potentially interact with the event and both the stream on the laptop we’re using, an ENVY 17 3D (see the full review soon on SlashGear,) and the app allowed us to see the event in a totally live stream.
The awesome thing about looking at both of these streams at once were not that they were giving us different angles, nay! It was seeing how similar our connections were. The computer was connected to Comcast Wifi (we’re in Minneapolis, Minnesota,) and the phone (a Samsung Continuum) was connected to Verizon’s 3G network. Both of the videos weren’t exactly matched, but they were REALLY close, nearly perfect all the time. Now that the near year is here, the Toshiba app (called “Times Square Official,”) is reset for next year, 364 days on the clock. Here’s to what’s sure to be the YEAR OF THE ANDROID. Stay tuned and get all your Android updates here with Android Community! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
[Rally With Us] to Fix the Android SMS Bug Posted: 31 Dec 2010 02:37 PM PST As you may know from our post this morning, there’s a bug in the greater Android system that messes with your texting. What does it mess with? The recipient. Any text you’ve sent on your Android phone over the past six months could potentially have been sent to the wrong recipient. And not only the wrong recipient in your contacts list – apparently texts are being sent to completely random people while your phone is telling you they were sent to the correct recipient! Harsh! We find this completely unacceptable, and since Google already knows about the problem, we ask you now to rally with us to get the problem to the top of their to-do lists.
All you’ve got to do is head over to their Android code complaint department to number 9392 SMS BUG aka “SMS are intermittently sent to wrong and seemingly random contact” and hit “Vote for this issue and get email change notifications.” Make sure you are logged into your Google account or you will not be able to see it. If enough people go ahead and do this, Google will, indeed, fix it. We find it wild and crazy that this has been an issue for this long, and today we, and the greater we meaning every single person who uses an Android phone, feel its time for such an integral part of the communication process on our devices to be fixed. Thanks! Lulz. ) |
Coby Kyros Android Tablets Come Stocked with X Rated Content Posted: 31 Dec 2010 02:09 PM PST Oh dear, oh no. It appears that in Marion, southern Illinois a couple of parents are pretty disturbed at the stock contents of the Coby Kyros tablets they gave their 12 and 15 year old daughters for Christmas. Actually only one of the devices, as opposed to both, had a few apps that were, well, less than appropriate for anyone opening the package for the first time – much less a young person such as this young lady in Illinois. One of the apps found right there on the home screen was called “Boobs! Butts! Babes!” and the other was called “Undress Me.”
“She touched it once to switch screens, and all of a sudden something that shouldn’t have been there came up,” Jay Hardin, the father of the family, said, “I actually thought she was kidding me. I walked in there and I looked at the screen of this thing and, sure enough, there were some things on there that should not have been on there for any kid.” – WSIL TV added that he said his daughters did not even have them long enough to connect to the internet. Walked in there? This seems suspicious. In one sentence he says they didn’t have enough time to connect to the internet, and in the other he says he “walked in there and looked at the screen.” We’re a teeny bit suspicious of this fellows knowledge of how fast kids understand technology and can connect to the internet with a device such as this. Of course the Coby group responded instantly to the news. Coby Senior Product Manager Michael Paladino said in a written statement: “There is nothing pre-programmed from Coby. Like any other internet device with an open platform, a wide range of content is available which may require parental oversight. Coby is always looking for ways to improve our offerings.” Steve Jobs apparently could not be reached for comment. [Via WSIL] ) |
Posted: 31 Dec 2010 01:38 PM PST Whoa! The makers of WakeMate have sent out a warning to users that their Android-compatable WakeMate might burst into flames. Ahhh! They’ve sent out this message today saying that the black USB charger bricks included with the product are defective. They say these chargers were sourced through a Chinese vendor and proper certification in the USA was performed – but these thangs are blowing up anyway. Check out the full letter and at least one exploding event via tweet.
NOTE that the main subject here is the USB charger included with the WakeMate package. It will burst into flames. This is the letter that was sent out to customers very recently:
There is one tweet saying that a device has actually, for real, started on fire. Beyond that, there’s a bit of extra info from the company from a Hacker News thread:

Droid Streamer Beta Streams Shows Movies to Android Device with Ease Posted: 31 Dec 2010 12:08 PM PST Behold! A sweet little app that plays all your favorite movies and shows (just so long as you like South Park and Avatar) – it’s in progress! Normally we wouldn’t post an app that’s still in Beta, but this one, although the interface isn’t pretty, looks rather promising. This app plays movies and TV shows basically INSTANTLY and is produced by a team including KarlssoN1337 from XDA forums.
Content comes from sites across the internet including YouTube and odd sites that stream media, and it works. Remember when you test out this very FREE app that it’s still in Beta, and it appears that they need some donations to keep the project running, but they’re updating constantly! Take a peek! Further Details on Asus Android Tablet Lineup for CES Posted: 31 Dec 2010 12:04 PM PST Tablets are going to be huge at this year’s CES. One of the manufacturers that we are expecting a lot of great devices from is, of course, Asus. It looks like they couldn’t hold back the excitement until next week and have released an unveiling video. ![]() We know that at least one of these interesting devices will be Android-based, but it looks like both the EP101 and EP102 will be running Honeycomb. Plus, from the video, we can guess that the EP101 will be the Android tablet with the detachable keyboard and the EP102 will be a slider tablet, of sorts. As always, we will see a ton of information regarding these new devices next week, and we will be sure to cover them to their full potential! [Via SlashGear] ) |
Remove Cell Standby Service From NOOKcolor For Improved Battery Life Posted: 31 Dec 2010 11:34 AM PST Because the NOOKcolor runs Android, there is quite a few unused software features within the device. Other than minimal storage usage, you would think this isn’t a major problem. However, your NOOKcolor running the Cell Standby process can severely drain your battery life.
Because the device is not a phone, running this process is essentially useless, and thanks to XDA member xboxexpert, we now have a way to remove this and, in turn, get improved battery life from the NOOKcolor. The developer had noticed his battery life skyrocket after he removed the process via script. This makes sense because the Cell Standby process in Android devices accounts for the most common battery drain. If you would like to have quite a bit more battery life on your Nook, then head over to the XDA hack thread for instructions on how to download this script and remove the process. [Via XDA] ) |
Source Code for EVO 4G Maintenance Build Released via HTC Posted: 31 Dec 2010 11:24 AM PST HTC has just posted the source code for their latest maintenance update that included the Swype keyboard, Kindle and Blockbuster applications. ![]() For developers looking to dive into the kernel code of this update, head over to the HTC Developer Center where you can pick up the three versions (for different hardware revisions of the EV 4G).
