Nexus S overclocked to 1.2GHz with new Bionix NS1 kernel

Posted: 02 Jan 2011 08:21 AM PST

The Nexus S‘ single-core Hummingbird processor was one of the main disappointments about the second official Googlephone, so we won’t argue with a replacement kernel that can squeeze extra juice out of the Samsung chip. A new xda-developers kernel promises to overclock the Nexus S to 1.2GHz.

The tweaked firmware is still a work in progress, with Bluetooth left to fix, and it builds on the existing Bionix NS1 mod. Obviously overclocking your phone leaves it potentially more vulnerable to hardware damage, so try at your own risk, but it’ll be interesting to see how these tweaked Nexus S units compare to dual-core devices like the Tegra 2 based LG Optimus 2X.

[Update] Android SMS Bug Now Has “Critical” Priority

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 07:54 PM PST

Hooray! Since yesterday when the entire internet (or at least a few hundred – thousand – million people who’re on Android) rallied behind making the Android SMS Bug a thing of the past by dropping a gigantic amount of clicks on the 9392 SMS BUG thread in the Google Android code complaint department. In the time between then and now, the thread went from medium priority up to CRITICAL! This is totally rockin since this problem has been on the books since way back in June, 2010.

This doesn’t mean that the problem will be fixed instantly, of course, but it certainly puts it higher on the list of “to-do” items for the Android fixers at Google. Just to make sure it stays up there at the top, keep on clicking!

All you’ve got to do is log into your Google account and head over to the 9392 SMS BUG thread, go down to the bottom, and hit the “Vote for this issue and get email change notifications” button. Let’s get it fixed!

Posted: 01 Jan 2011 07:04 PM PST

Over at XDA Developers, user Spirellilein designed some excellent skins that represent the new Android 2.3 Gingerbread "look". There seem to be seven different versions available for download on the XDA thread here, each using a different color scheme.

Installation is easy: Once Beautiful Widgets is downloaded from the market, open the .rar file and place the folder in your "sdcarddatabeautifulwidgetsskins" directory. From there you should be able to access the new skin inside the Beautiful Widgets application. Spirellilein has offered to accommodate to any personal requests dealing with new colors or fonts, just post to this thread with your ideas.
