| Sony Ericsson Dismisses Android 2.4 “Glitch” on Xperia arc Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:24 AM PST As you might already know, some folks around these internets have been noticing that the brand new Xperia arc has sometimes (basically all the time) been displaying Android version 2.4. What’s that, it’s running Ice Cream, you say? Nay. As Sony Ericsson rep Rikard Skogberg notes in a brand new Q and A (plus demo video), any number displayed on the phone above 2.3 is a misconfiguration in the sample phone whoever sees it is using. He notes that this is “nothing to get too excited about really, sorry.”

AWWW darnit, says everyone else, wishing for secrets and sugary candy. Take a peek at this full question answering session here, clearing up some questions lots of people were having about Xperia arc since its announcement a few days ago:
Next take a peek at the demo video Skogberg posted running through the design and the home screen, and don’t forget to check out our pal SlashGear’s hands on video. [Via Sony Ericsson] ) |
| Motorola XOOM Full Details Released, Includes Barometer Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:10 AM PST Oh my goodness you lovely giant pad, you Motorola XOOM, you’ve been voted the Best In Show at CES 2011 and we don’t anticipate you’ll be going away anytime soon. What a fair and lovely time you’re having. How’s the weather from the heaven of PR? Oh you’ve got a barometer built in, so you can tell us how nice it is? That sounds totally awesome!

Indeed the Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet does appear to have a barometer built in, so says Motodev, the Motorola Developers site. You can find the rest of the specs there as well, but just think! A barometer! How joyous the day! Now we can tell the altitude we’re at, and more accurately tell the weather, right from the pad! Just what I’ve always wanted in life! Accurate country chit-chat. [Via Motodev] ) |
| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 11:00 AM PST Oh my goodness! How would you like your Nexus S, which recently of course booted up MeeGo, to boot you up some lovely Ubuntu? It’s totally possible, and it’s done by the same dude as did the MeeGo boot! XDA developer forum member, stroughtonsmith — or Steven Troughton-Smith brings us all we need to get started.

Mister Smith does note that even though you can do this on the Nexus S, it might be better to do it on your “personal, every day device.” – meaning of course that you probably shouldn’t do it on your mother’s phone because she will totally flip out if you brick it all up. The same Ubuntu image is used that was used way back when we did the HD2, and the same process as was used for MeeGo is used to bring this system to this phone. Be careful, and tell us what happens if your phone explodes! Check out the full instructions in the thread at XDA. [Via SlashGear] ) |
| Android 2.4 Ice Cream Coming This Summer Posted: 10 Jan 2011 10:28 AM PST Just in time for the heat to require such tasty treats! An anonymous source has reported that Android 2.4 Ice Cream will be released right around the June / July summer time of the year THIS year, 2011. As you may already know, the name fits as the alphabetical names do add up to an I: Doughnut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, then Ice Cream.

The source, speaking with Pocket Lint and refusing to allow the public to know their name or affiliation, Android 2.4 will be announced somewhere around Google’s IO conference at the beginning of May 2011. This of course puts to rest the idea that Honeycomb will be released as 2.4 – especially since it was just announced as 3.0, but I have a bit of wonder in my mind on why they’d go from 2.3 to 3.0 then back to 2.4, unless they don’t plan on advancing past 2.9 with Android for mobile phones? We shall see. [Via Pocket Lint] ) |
| LG Revolution Quick Look [Video] Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:54 AM PST LG has not quite been the focus of this year's CES 2011, but that doesn't mean they will not be a key player for 2011. First with the introduction of the LG Optimus 2X and now with the less powerful LG Revolution, LG is back as a player in the current market.
With our hands-on time with the device we saw the Revolution to be impressive, but not groundbreaking. Speeds were fast, but there was some apparent lag when dealing with applications such as the web browser and Maps. Running a 1GHz processor, we would expect more, but with LG's overlay of Android 2.2 we can only expect that the software optimization will hit the device before it's launch. Check out our hands-on with the device, as well as a full gallery below! ) |
| Motorola i886 for Sprint Available Now for $79.99 Posted: 10 Jan 2011 09:20 AM PST Today, Sprint officially unveiled the Motorola i886, a rugged device that’s running Android under the hood. Featuring a landscape sliding physical keyboard, and what looks to be a remarkably simple version of Android, the device seem to be a smartphone for those who may not want to focus on all of the features of many Android-based smartphones, but who need to have a device that won’t break when it falls out of their hand or pocket.

The Push-To-Talk (PTT)-enabled device is the first from Sprint to be labeled as a rugged device, and be a landscape sliding device. The i886 is also dust resistant, and is able to handle shock, moisture, and temperature extremes. There’s a 2MP camera on the back of the device, which will let you capture video as well. And if you need space, there’s a microSD card slot that will support cards up to 32GB. The i886 is a handset that costs $279.99 without a contract, or $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate. It’s available now online, or through a Sprint retail store. [via Sprint] ) |
| Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone Quick Look Posted: 10 Jan 2011 08:38 AM PST CES is all over, and it’s been an amazing week for both Verizon and Samsung. Samsung announced their new Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone (official name, for now), and we got to give the device the hands-on treatment! ![]() The phone was incredibly fast, it was one of the most powerful smartphones on the showroom floor, and it definitely was optimized well for both it’s operating system and internal hardware. Shipping with a 1GHz Hummingbird processor and Froyo 2.2, we can expect the device to be one of the leaders of early 2011, and on into the third and fourth quarters if it receives the Android 2.3 Gingerbread update. Still officially unnamed, the 4G LTE Smartphone will hit Verizon the first half of this year. Be sure to check out our hands-on video with the unit below. ) |
| Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone plays Resident Evil 2 on video Posted: 10 Jan 2011 06:58 AM PST Having been spotted on numerous occasions in photosets, the Sony Ericsson PlayStation Phone has now turned up in a video showing gameplay in action. The footage, caught by Edge Magazine, shows the XPERIA Play branded handset playing ripped PS1 ROMs through an app called ROM Buddy.
Whether or not the final product – which is tipped to be officially launched at MWC 2011 next month – will have that same functionality remains to be seen, but it’s certainly proof that the PlayStation Phone’s hardware is capable of running the full console (albeit aged) titles Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer. | New Samsung Galaxy Tabs & dual-core Gingerbread Super AMOLED Plus smartphones next month Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:59 AM PST Samsung is expected to launch its next-gen Galaxy Tab tablets at Mobile World Congress in February 2011, according to the WSJ, alongside a new range of Android smartphones. The Korea Herald reports that the new handsets will use dual-core processors, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and have Super AMOLED Plus displays, as on the Samsung Infuse 4G.
According to Samsung mobile exec based on fourth generation technology, the new tablets will be “based on fourth generation technology”, though it’s unclear if he’s referring entirely to 4G connectivity. Samsung announced a 4G LTE version of the original Galaxy Tab for Verizon last week. [via OLED-Info] ) |
| Posted: 10 Jan 2011 05:04 AM PST The MeeGo on Nexus S project continues, with the dim screen brightness of the first build now tweaked for a far more usable level, and a video demo of GLXGEARS and the Fennec mobile browser in action released. Developer Steve Troughton-Smith has been working his magic ironing out the bugs, forcing the screen to run at full brightness so the MeeGo install is at least visible while you’re using it.
As Steve himself says, it’s all looking a little jaundiced at the moment; that seems to be a gamma issue. Still, with Nokia’s own MeeGo device still some way off on the horizon, we’ll take what we can get. |
| Chrysler and Mopar unveil Android app for vehicle info Posted: 10 Jan 2011 04:34 AM PST Chrysler and Mopar have unveiled a new app for Chrysler branded vehicles that will provide owners of Chrysler cars with information on their vehicles. The app will offer access to Customer Care and 24-hour roadside assistance. It will also feature product demos and allow the owner to connect with other owners on the social media sites operated by Chrysler.

The coolest part about the app is that it will have general info about the vehicle with operation manuals, maintenance info, and warranty details. The app will hit Android first and then come to other platforms later. “Chrysler’s tech-savvy customers appreciate the ability to simplify and manage their life on-the-go,” said Olivier Francois, Chrysler Brand CEO – Chrysler Group LLC. “These new apps from Mopar allow owners to easily access information about their vehicle as well as connect with other owners and enthusiasts via social media sites, saving time and organizing the information in one readily-accessible spot, available at their fingertips.” ) |
| Successor to the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro smartphone surfaces in leaked pics Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:53 AM PST If you are a fan of the Sony Ericsson X10 Mini Pro smartphone, you might be interested to check out some pics of what is thought to be the follow-up to that smartphone that have surfaced. The pics show a slider with a QWERTY keyboard under the screen.

That screen is a 3-inch unit with a resolution of 320 x 480 supporting multi-touch. The smartphone reportedly runs Android 2.3 and will come with a CPU inside that runs at either 1GHz or 800MHz. the GPU inside the smartphone is an Adreno 205. The spacing on that keyboard looks good and it should be easy to type on. The rear camera has an LED flash and there is no indication of the resolution of the camera. Exactly when the phone might land is unknown as well. ) |
| Rhapsody bringing on-demand music service to Verizon LTE Android Devices Posted: 10 Jan 2011 03:21 AM PST Rhapsody is a music service that has been around for a long time. The company has a streaming service that lets the user get all the music they want each month and listening to the tunes all they want as long as they pay the monthly fee. Verizon has announced that it is getting a cool exclusive music experience on its LTE network from Rhapsody.

The music service will be offered on select Verizon 4G LTE smartphones with an exclusive Rhapsody 4G app. The app will stream tunes at a higher bit rate with 192 kbps AAC format and fast download speeds. The user will be able to download ten songs in about 30 seconds. The app will also have Rhapsody TV allowing the user to watch Rhapsody originals concerts and more. The app will run on Android devices and Verizon says that the app and LTE network will be offered to about a third of the country already covered by LTE. ) |
| Motorola ordering 800,000 XOOM tablets for Q1 alone? Posted: 10 Jan 2011 02:10 AM PST Motorola is expecting to ship as many as 800,000 XOOM tablet units in Q1 2011 alone, with DigiTimes‘ sources in the supply chain saying they expect orders to approach the million mark this quarter. The Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet is expected to ship sometime before March on Verizon’s network.
Meanwhile, both 4G LTE versions and a newly-confirmed WiFi-only version are also expected later in 2011. More information on the XOOM here. ) |
| Motorola XOOM Wifi-only Version Confirmed by Latin America GM Posted: 09 Jan 2011 05:18 PM PST So you’re the sort of person who hates it when the only way you can legally own a device is to purchase it tethered to a monthly payment plan, yes? You’re also the sort of person who saw the Motorola XOOM Android 3.0 Honeycomb tablet and flipped your wig, then flipped it again when you found out it was voted best in show. You had your eyebrows lowered when you found there’d only be data-service versions of this device coming out, but don’t fret! Latin America GM Maurizio Angelone has just confirmed the existence of a Wifi-only version of the tablet will be out in April of this year – before all other versions?

Today we saw the XOOM available for pre-order up on Handtec – if you take a few clicks on in, you’ll notice you can purchase the device without adding a data plan. Are these pre-orders the Wifi versions of the device we’re talking about here? If you also take a look back at the Motorola XOOM launching for Verizon post, you’ll see that we found out that the device will be released with at least 3G capabilities in the first quarter of this year, it being then upgradable to 4G LTE somewhere inside the second quarter. The confirmation of the Wifi-only version comes from the aforementioned Latin America Motorola exec Angelone as he speaks with a publication by the name of Infobae. The article does not specify if the date for release he speaks of (April) affects only the area in which the online publication tends to (Argentina) or if it’ll be a global release. It’s a bit hazy. Check the important part of the interview out here, badly translated:

| Nexus S Gets MeeGo Install [PLUS How-To Included] Posted: 09 Jan 2011 03:16 PM PST Pros, this is a heads up. If you’re into the whole installing of one OS on a competing brand’s hardware, this news is for you. It seems that some folks including XDA Developers Forum member stroughtonsmith (aka our friend Steven Troughton-Smith,) and a crack team of other smarties have booted MeeGo unto their Nexus S phones from a rootfs image on their internal memory. Know what that means? No flashing! As our pal Smith notes, MeeGo seems to be the first non-Android OS to be successfully running on the Nexus S.

All you hackers, hear this set of instructions. If you’re new to this sort of thing, I recommend trying an easier project before you work with this. First, grab and build a MeeGo rootfs in ext2 format. Next, courtesy of Smith, use this kickstart as a base and note that it includes adb support, this being the only way you’ll be able to interact with it at the moment. When your image is compiled, copy it to linux/rootfs.ext2 on the internal memory of your Nexus S. Next, use fastboot to boot [this boot.img], or if you’d like, you can flash it to recovery if you’d instead like a dual boot. From here, you’re on your own. Again, if you didn’t understand anything above this sentence or feel like it might be too difficult to accomplish, just don’t do it! If it seems like a bunch of fun for you, feel free! Currently there are a few items that are disfunctional – What works for sure - Check it out, let us know how it’s going. – Thanks for the tip, Steve! ) |
