EVO 4G Price Drop to $99 on Amazon Posted: 17 Jan 2011 11:02 AM PST So you’re thinking about grabbing a big fat phone but you don’t know which one’s the best at a $100 price point? Perhaps you’d like to take a glance right on over here? The EVO 4G, for sale on Amazon, has had a price shift from $199 all the way down to $99. The price on the Sprint website remains the same.
You can either grab the White or the Black and have an equally rock and roll time clicking and swiping and… do people still play Angry Birds? Throwing birds around. This sale, a good hypothesis would be, is in reaction to the oncoming EVO 4G SHIFT sales. Blast them off the shelves! [Via UW View] ) |
Dell Streak 7 4G Tablet Release Date Feb 2nd? Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:51 AM PST It appears, according to a one-sheet sent to TmoNews, that Dell Streak 7 4G tablet will be released on February 2nd, 2011. Last we heard of this device, it was way back on the 14th of January and they said it’d be A Couple More Weeks At Least – they weren’t fooling!
Furthermore, TmoNews has heard from a ninja (really, a ninja) that Samsung Galaxy Tab will be ending it’s life (with Seppuku) at the end of January. This can be further substantiated by the recent price drops both in the USA and in Canada. This will more than likely make way for a 4G version of the tablet sometime in the near future (Mobile World Congress 2011? We’ll be there to let you know!) [Via TmoNews] ) |
Sony Ericsson Sticking with Android, Releasing Phones with Latest OS Posted: 17 Jan 2011 10:39 AM PST Still just releasing the apparently massive amount of interviews and tiny tips they received at CES 2011, Pocket Lint today lets loose a little interview they had with Steven Walker, acting head of global marketing at Sony Ericsson. In this interview, Walker lets the world know that they don’t plan on working with Microsoft on Windows Phone right this moment, having worked with them on a number of 6.x products but not quite feeling like they need any “concrete announcement” when or if they’ll work with Windows Phone 7. On that note, Walker does confirm they’ll continue to release a massive amount of Android product: “We see the need as an industry to galvanise behind the Android ecosystem to create a strong ecosystem for consumers.”
Is this exciting? Sure it is! Walker believes that Android will eventually win out in the mobile operating system wars: "We need to do this so that there will only be a certain number of eco-systems that will prevail. Developers won't develop for 17 eco-systems. Consumers won't choose between 100 different eco-systems. In the end only a certain number will prevail" Finally, Walker notes that in 2010 they didn’t find it all that necessary to release phones on the most current Android OS. This year (2011) they plan to learn from their mistakes: "That said we are launching a product in Q1 of this year running 2.3, we have recognised the need to have our products on the latest release. Last year we didn't anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release. And again that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones.” [Via Pocket Lint] ) |
Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:50 AM PST It’s Monday and what better way to start off a busy work week than with a little rap about our favorite operating system? NOTE: This is extremely NSFW, and so bad it’s hilarious. The rap describes the excitement of a new Samsung Captivate owner as he talks down to iPhone fanboys. Behind all the harsh language, and $20 bills, it’s actually quite funny. Now only if his device would be seeing an update anytime soon…. ah, Samsung. [Via AndroidCentral] ) |
Samsung S5830 Spotted in Product Shot Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:42 AM PST Ah, the Samsung S5830 – the device of many names. We already know that it will hit India under the codename Galaxy Cooper, and now we’ve seen confirmation that it will hit other markets under the moniker Samsung Ace. Don’t get too excited, folks. The device is not exactly the most powerful device out there with specs as follows: Specs:
At least it has Android 2.2 – that’s a start, right? [Via EuroDroid] ) |
Mystery T225 Motorola Device Passes the FCC Posted: 17 Jan 2011 08:00 AM PST The FCC has always been the main go-to for product leaks as they’re ready to be released. This weekend a FCC filing was placed for a mystery Motorola device with model number T225. Could this be the XOOM or something new? The XOOM, being an obvious guess is further backed up by the T2 in the model number which could point to the tablet’s Tegra 2 processor. Could this be the XOOM – how about a new unannounced tablet, or even a separate Android device? What do you think? Let us know in the comments! [Via Phandroid] ) |
SwiftKey $1.99 For A limited Time Posted: 17 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST SwiftKey is definitely a favorite keyboard of many here at Android Community. Truly helping you type faster with predictive text, SwiftKey is now on sale for $1.99, down from $3.99. For anyone who has not given SwiftKey a chance, now is definitely the time to do so as the 50-percent off price-drop will only be in place until the end of January. Not only has TouchType cut the price of the popular keyboard replacement, but registration for the company’s VIP program officially ends tomorrow, Tuesday January 18th. [Via EuroDroid] ) |
Disney Themed Android Phone Hitting Japan Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:58 AM PST Disney stopped their cell phone plans for US distribution back in 2007, but that’s not stopping them from releasing devices in Japan. The country has a huge Disney character following, and now they’re being treated to their own device, along with some perks. The device will be shipping with Android 2.2 and will be the first smartphone that will ship with exclusive Disney features such as wallpapers, widgets, and applications. Unofficially announced, the phone has specs that are near identical to the Sharp Galapagos 003SH – which include a 3.8-inch touchscreen, no-glasses 3D, 1GHz Snapdragon CPU, and a 9.6MP camera. To make the deal even sweeter, users will also be granted access to an exclusive @disney.ne.jp email address as well as the ability to choose one of the cases below. [Via MobileCrunch] ) |
Samsung S5830 Revealed to be Galaxy Cooper, Full Specs Discovered Posted: 17 Jan 2011 06:42 AM PST We just heard that the Samsung S5830 would be coming to a few regions under the name Galaxy Ace, but now we have word and specs of the device to hit India under the moniker “Galaxy Cooper.” Looking very similar to the iPhone 4 and other Galaxy devices, the phone has also had its specs revealed. Honestly, they’re not too impressive – but at least it has Android 2.2 Froyo, kudos to Samsung. Specs:
Expect this new Galaxy device to be announced officially at this year’s MWC. Reminder: We’ll be at this year’s MWC ready to fully cover all announcements along with hands-on coverage of the entire event. [Via UnwiredView] ) |
Amazon will control prices for apps in its Android app store Posted: 17 Jan 2011 05:46 AM PST We have already talked about the Amazon Android app store a few times since the store finally opened on the developer end of things to get apps lined up for launch on the store early this month. ITProPortal reports that it has learned that the developers will into be the ones setting prices on the store.
The devs will submit and app along with an MSRP for what the app should sell for. Amazon will then choose the price it wants to sell the app at. Amazon could even decide to offer the app free. I can't see that going over well with devs if they thinking their app is worth $1.99 and Amazon decides to make it free. The other issue is that Amazon devs could be forced to reduce the price of an app to match its price on Amazon’s store elsewhere. ) |
T-Mobile puts up page for G-Slate Android tablet Posted: 17 Jan 2011 05:27 AM PST We have already seen some info on the coming T-Mobile G-Slate Android tablet. Last week the application for the tablet hit the FCC seeking to clear the way for the table to hit the market. The app did confuse a bit through considering that the new filing had a different model number than the one we had seen previously.
We figured last week that with the FCC filing showing the frequency the G-Slate would operate on that T-Mo was the target. We were right on that and T-Mobile has put up a product page for the G-Slate now. The product page shows few details and you can only see the back of the tablet on the page. What the page does show is that the tablet will use Honeycomb, will operate on the 4G network, and it will feature the “latest Google mobile innovations.” No hard specs are offered, but hopefully we will get more details in the coming days and weeks. TurboTax app comes to Android so you can do your taxes on the go Posted: 17 Jan 2011 02:53 AM PST With January here its Tax time again for most of us. I like to put mine off until around October personally, but if you are the sort that actually gets a refund, you may be keen to get things going. TurboTax has announced a new app for Android devices called SnapTax that allows you to do your taxes directly from your Android smartphone.
The app only works with filers that need to use 1040-EZ forms so if you need other forms you are out of luck. The app is actually pretty cool. It allows you to take a picture of your W2 and the important details that you need to plug into the tax forms are automatically extracted from the photo and put into your forms. Then you answer questions about what you do, and you can file your taxes and save them in PDF format. The app will also tell you how large your refund will be. If you live in a state where you have to file state taxes the app will do that as well. You can download the app and try it out free; if you want to file using the Android app, it costs $14.99. ) |
CyanogenMod 7 Quadrant Benchmark on Nexus S [Exclusive] Posted: 16 Jan 2011 09:35 PM PST Take a peek here at CyanogenMod 7 as it is right this moment, by the numbers, straight off the press on a Quadrant benchmark. A total of 1717 on a brand new Nexus S, and that’s without ext4 implemented, without being overclocked. Sound sweet to you?
If you’re interested in doing this to your own device, head over to the CyanogenMod 7 Releasing Nightly Builds NOW post to grab yourself the update, then get “Quadrant Standard Edition” in the Android Marketplace. Of course, your device might not necessarily work with this 7 version of CyanogenMod yet, but there’s a link or two there to get you set up with an older version of CyanogenMod too, if you like. Get aboard the train! ) |
Samsung Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Suit Images Leaked Posted: 16 Jan 2011 09:13 PM PST Take a peek here at a couple of production-quality images of some new Samsung Galaxy images, one of what’s being called X5830 (the Ace) and another that’s called S5670 (the Suit). This first one, Samsung Galaxy Ace, if the numbers are right, would be the same phone as this phone: [Froyo Candybar Phone] whose images leaked a few days ago. The other device, the Suit, appears to be a slightly lower-end phone and might deserve a bit less attention.
Like most phones whose images are leaking during these weeks of the year, we expect these phones to be officially released at Mobile World Congress 2011. We’ll be there to bring you full coverage and will hopefully have first-hand pics of every phone under the sun. Fun! [Via Eurodroid] ) |
Notion Ink Adam Displays Solaro Functionality Posted: 16 Jan 2011 08:46 PM PST Rohan has just posted a video of some brand new workings on the Adam, particularly in the way of students working on the tablet. This video again is taken directly from Adam’s direct HDMI output. Rohan reminds us of the canvas app, the office support, the calendar and email apps, and leads in to how one of the most important aspects of the tablet is Notion Ink’s business partners.
This video shows an app by the name of Solaro, an app that’s basically on it’s 1.0 journey into iPad and iPhone as we speak. It’s an E-learning “solution” that is “100% compliant with each region’s core curriculum standards and customized to meet the unique learning needs of each individual student.” The version here on the Adam can both teach and test you on all sort of things, showing here in the video to be teaching you some excellent science. Looks simple. Take a peek: [Via Notion Ink] ) |
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Arc to Feature Unlimited Points Touch Screen Posted: 16 Jan 2011 08:24 PM PST First be sure to take a peek at Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA Arc in our hands-on video, then come back and take notice at something that may be freaking awesome – the possibility of a massively multi-touch screen handled by a Cypress TrueTouch-digitizer. This group has three kinds of digitizers in it’s TrueTouch family, the CY8CTMAxxx, CY8CTMGxxx and CY8CTSTxxx. The first is a Multi-Touch All-Point which can withstand up to 32 simultaneous loading points – this is the one they found in the TGBUS teardown. Do you know what that means?
It means wacky games for everyone! In the following clipping from the Cypress product page it says both “any number” or touchpoints as well as “32 X / Y sensor inputs” – so who knows how many it’s actually got. More than likely the “any number” thing sort of comes from the idea that a human being has… you know… ten fingers. Take a peek at that clip here:

PlayStation Phone (XPERIA Play) McDonalds Review Posted: 16 Jan 2011 07:56 PM PST I bet you didn’t see this one coming. It appears that there’s another review (a full review, if you speak Taiwanese, or whichever brand of Taiwanese they’re using on ePrice where the review is done. This review has some fantastically sharp high-res photographs to accompany two oddly located videos (the videos shown below.) I’ve decided their location choices are due to the lighting offered in both. To each their very own!
We’re getting pretty pumped up about this fabulous object, especially since it’ll more than likely be released at the ever so excellent Barcelona-located Mobile World Congress. We’ll be there, and specifically yours truly will be running full speed through the doors looking left and right for the device until I see it, at which point I’ll be furiously clicking pics for you, the Community. Take a peek at these two videos and wonder at the environment. Also take a peek at the couple images below in the gallery. Again the full review is over at ePrice. [Via MobileSyrup] ) |
Galaxy S No-Froyo Explained by Samsung Update Fees? Posted: 16 Jan 2011 07:12 PM PST So you’re following along with the epic story of how Galaxy S devices across the board still don’t have their long-awaited update to Android 2.2 Froyo, yes? Well take a peek at this – a supposed Samsung inside has come forth (in XDA forums) to say that the reason for the stopping of updates pushing through from Samsung to carriers is the fact that Samsung is charging for Android updates as feature updates – and that carriers are responding to the costs by refusing to pay for Android 2.2, hoping to devalue the Galaxy S line.
This is wild. All carriers carrying Galaxy S phones with potential updates to Android 2.2 Froyo not paying some sort of fee to Samsung for that up update? Seems kind of incredible. Take a peek at the full text from the supposed Samsung source, originally posted in XDA Forums, here:
This is interesting – very interesting! It doesn’t seem completely undeniable, yet seems like quite the story coming from a Samsung Insider given the FACT that every single person working for Samsung works FOR Samsung unless they’re on the way out. Think about that. Take a peek at a couple more bits on Samsung of late over here: [Via XDA] ) |

Samsung Fascinate Update Axes SD Card Mounting Posted: 16 Jan 2011 06:02 PM PST So you updated your phone a couple of days ago on your Samsung Fascinate, the update pushed out by Verizon, right? Have you tried to mount your SD card as a mass storage device to your desktop? Good luck! Users in several forums are noting a problem doing so, saying now that any attempt to mount their SD card ends up with no luck to be had.
There does seem to be on big giant monstrous list of a step by step you can take if you head over to [this post] in a thread in our pal Android Central’s house, reproduced here for your convenience:
But if you’re using a Mac, you might just be completely out of luck until Verizon grants the world a reprieve. In both cases, we expect more than one average, every day user is going to flip out and crash into a wall with rage before they realize it’s the update that screwed up their phone – get ready for some phone calls, Verizon.
