Samsung to be Manufacturer of New SideKick? Posted: 27 Jan 2011 10:49 AM PST When the Samsung Galaxy S 4G was announced out of the blue just a week ago, we were not given much details or even shots of the device or the Sidekick that was said to be “returning soon.” However, the rumor mill is starting up and it seems the new T-Mobile Sidekick will not only be Android-based, but it will be made my Samsung.
TmoNews has reason to believe that the new Sidekick will be Samsung manufactured. Looking back at the slide on the announcement, we could definitely see the Samsung characteristics. What do you think? Would a Sidekick made by Samsung be something that would interest you? Let us know! ) |
Android 3.0 Honeycomb Wallpapers [FROM THE FORUMS] Posted: 27 Jan 2011 10:36 AM PST Well now! It appears that an intrepid young man or lady from the Android Community discussion forums has come forth with a package for peace – what appears to be the entirety of Android 3.0 Honeycomb’s stock wallpaper gallery. A whole group of 30 wallpapers for you to download for free and apply to your non-Honeycomb device are now up for grabs.
Head on over to this thread and be sure to thank big H for his or her work, we assume these were found in the depths of the Honeycomb SDK that was released yesterday. What other gems will be discovered? NOTE: the download is a Megaupload download, which means you’ll have to wait for 40 seconds unless you’ve got a paid account. After 40 seconds or so on the clock, you’ll be able to download the zip file containing all 30 wallpapers for free. [Via Android Community Discussion Forums] ) |
XPERIA Play vs Sony NGP (PSP 2) ULTIMATE SMACKDOWN! Posted: 27 Jan 2011 09:55 AM PST Before we even begin, I’ve got to mention, since this sort of thing is contested quite often, that when we say “Which is Better?” we of course mean “Which is Better for You?” Below we’ve listed the specs on both the XPERIA Play (aka the PlayStation phone) and the Sony NGP (revealed today to essentially be the second generation PlayStation Portable.) What you’ll find is two surprisingly different experiences, one device able to bring you the superior gaming experience, the other offering you the additional pluses of the Android Marketplace, a smaller footprint, and more. Choose your destiny!
Inside Dimensions Display Connectivity Controls Audio Games Imaging So what’s it gonna be, folks? It’s a little bit difficult to judge at the moment since most of these specs (especially on the XPERIA Play,) are still technically unannounced. We’d like to say you’d be better off with the phone if you’d like more across-the-board functionality, going with the NGP if you want games specifically, but it’s not that simple. If you could find a way to connect the NGP to a 3G or 4G network, it appears as though it’d be a superior machine as far as social interaction goes (isn’t that strange?) But when it comes to apps further reaching than what PlayStation and its affiliates are going to offer, it appears that the XPERIA Play might be better suited to your needs, especially since it’s got a MUCH better chance of being jailbroken within the first 10 minutes of its release, leaving you open to thousands of not only games, but apps that can do much more than skateboarding on a screen. What do you think? If you’re planning on purchasing, which one are you looking at to grab? Here’s some additional media to help you decide: |
Facebook Denies Phone Rumors, Again – Hints at HTC Utilizing APIs Posted: 27 Jan 2011 09:28 AM PST The Facebook phone has been long rumored. Last year at the Facebook press event, the speculation was that the company would officially release a branded phone, these were shot down by the company who stated they were going to focus on the software side of things. However, recent rumor has hit the net of an HTC Facebook branded phone, and these too have been denied by the company. However, they might have also shed some light on what direction HTC is going with for their next version of the Sense UI. Dan Rose, head of business development at Facebook, denied the existance of an officially branded phone and went on to claim that this was just a case of a manufacturer using their APIs in an interesting way.
Hopefully we will see this new interesting integration of Facebook at this year’s Mobile World Congress kicking off in just a few weeks. We’ll be there bringing you the latest Android news, so be sure to stay tuned! As far as this new interesting integration, what do you think HTC has up their sleeves? [Via AndroidAndMe] ) |
Further Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Photos and Video Published Posted: 27 Jan 2011 09:04 AM PST The Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc has sure been publicized quite a bit lately, mainly due to the company’s bold approach at showing off the device’s camera. And today we are met with even more pictures and a video from the impressive upcoming device.
The video this time features more fast moving action and, from what we can see, the device really shines as expected. Check out the video below: Click here to view the embedded video. For those of you interested in the device, remember that it has already been made available for pre-order! [Via XBlog] ) |
White Nexus S Spotted in the Wild Posted: 27 Jan 2011 08:47 AM PST We first the the white Nexus S earlier this week with a series of production shots of the device. However, for the first time, we have now seen the sleek device in the wild.
The Next Web has been sent an image of the white Nexus S in the wild from a “well placed industry source.” This source also went on to mention that this device will be available via Vodafone, but we’re not too sure about the credibility of this statement as we have heard that it will not be launching on the carrier, at least initially. Hopefully we will be seeing the white Nexus S, and soon, as white smartphones just have that exclusivity to them that many are looking for. [Via The Next Web] ) |
AAA Roadside Assistance App Now Available in the Android Market Posted: 27 Jan 2011 08:37 AM PST AAA has now published their official Android offering to the Android Market. Allowing customers to request roadside assistance from the app, it will be a very helpful tool for any AAA member in need. Once you open the application, you will have the option of requesting roadside assistance. Your phone will then use the GPS in your device to transmit your location directly to AAA so they can get you service to you as quick as possible. The application is part of the company’s mobile suite and is available, for free, in the Android Market. ORLANDO, Fla., Jan. 21, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — AAA has expanded its suite of mobile offerings with the launch of an Android-compatible version of its AAA Roadside app. The free app allows AAA members to request roadside assistance from the nation’s largest motor club without even placing a call. Users do not have to worry if they are unable to provide an address or location of where they are broken down, because the AAA Roadside app utilizes the phone’s GPS to transmit their location directly to AAA Roadside Assistance. “AAA is committed to developing new and innovative ways to better meet the needs of its members,” said Marshall L. Doney, vice president, AAA Automotive and Financial Services. “Breakdowns are never a pleasant experience, but mobile offerings such as the AAA Roadside app can help AAA locate members quickly and be prepared to try to resolve their car trouble on-site so we can get them back on the go.” The AAA Roadside app debuted in 2009 with an iPhone-compatible version that has been downloaded a half million times. In addition to a redesigned user interface, the app includes several new features. AAA Roadside now offers a Battery Quote Calculator that instantly provides AAA member pricing on replacement batteries offered through AAA’s Mobile Battery Service. After entering the vehicle’s year, make, model and engine size, AAA members receive battery pricing and can choose to have their battery replaced by one of AAA’s roadside problem-solvers. If they do so, the pricing and part number are submitted automatically with their request for AAA Roadside Assistance. AAA members also can register up to eight vehicles to their app profile, which is sent automatically with roadside assistance requests to aid AAA’s roadside problem-solvers in quickly locating members in need of rescue. Additionally, the app enables users to locate nearby AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities should their car trouble require a tow to a repair shop, and they are in need of recommendations of where to go. AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities are inspected by AAA and must meet and maintain tough professional standards for training, cleanliness, customer service and equipment. Customers of Approved shops are surveyed on an ongoing basis, and the shop must maintain a customer satisfaction index of 90 percent or higher. The AAA Roadside app is only the latest in a suite of free mobile offerings by the nation’s largest motor club. The AAA Discounts app, available for iPhone and Android, uses GPS technology to display nearby AAA Show Your Card & Save locations. AAA TripTik Mobile, available for iPhone, provides AAA’s mapping and travel planning tools on a phone in addition to being the first free app to offer updated gas prices at stations near the user’s location. AAA Mobile Web can be accessed from any web-enabled smartphone and allows members to submit a request for AAA Roadside Assistance, receive a battery quote and locate AAA offices, AAA Show Your Card & Save locations, AAA Approved Auto Repair facilities and AAA Approved and Diamond Rated Lodgings and Restaurants. As North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, AAA provides more than 52 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services. Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, fully tax-paying AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers. AAA clubs can be visited on the Internet at AAA.com. AAA news releases, high-resolution images, broadcast-quality video, fact sheets and podcasts are available on the AAA NewsRoom at AAA.com/news. |
HTC Verizon smartphone latest to leak Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:19 AM PST HTC can’t seem to keep its phones under wraps; after one in-the-wild sighting of a handset looking an awful lot like a Desire replacement comes another device, this time with Verizon branding. Still unnamed, the smartphone has cropped up in the mobile01 forums ahead of an expected debut at MWC 2011 next month. Specifications are unknown, but the angular back does get a camera with dual-LED flash. Style-wise it’s a mixture between HTC’s WP7 range and the Incredible, though it’s expected to run Android. Awesome Super Mario Android wallpaper Posted: 27 Jan 2011 06:12 AM PST I am a big Super Mario fan going back years ago when the game first hit stores when I was a kid. Mario is one of the most popular game characters out there. If you are a fan of Mario, you can make Super Mario Bros your wallpaper like the geek in the video below.
To make this happen on your device it needs to be running Android 2.1 or higher. Mario runs around on the screen jumping over things and going from block to block, it's really cool. The wallpaper has three themes that are all things you will recall from the games. It’s not a playable game, but it looks like it. The wallpaper is created on the fly so it will always be different thanks to level generators and an AI to control Mario. The only downside here is that your battery life will probably suck after the install. Via Mashable ) |

Android app for ATM repair techs launches Posted: 27 Jan 2011 05:32 AM PST There really is an app for everything out there. This has to be one of the most niche apps I have ever seen for the Android platform .The app is called the ATMtech Mobile App and it is available for free on the Android Market right now.
The app is for techs that repair the ATMs that give us cash when we need it. The app has all sorts of info and details in it that will help the service techs in the field diagnose and repair the machines. The app offers a listing of ATM error codes, ATM owner manuals, how to video series, and information for calling the manufactures and tech support lines. The app offers info specifically for Hantle, Nautilus Hyosung, Triton, Genmega, NCR and WRG branded ATM machines. ) |

The new game is called Crystal Defenders, has previously been offered on other platforms, and is coming to Android for the first time.
The game setting is in various locations from Final Fantasy Tactics. Crystal Defenders is a tower defense game. The game is your typical tower defense where the monsters enter the screen and then the player uses the defenses they have arranged to kill them off. There are two version of the game with W1 being an intro to the game and W2 having the full game experience. The game will cost about $7 for the full version. ) |
HTC smartphone caught in wild ahead of MWC 2011 debut Posted: 27 Jan 2011 03:07 AM PST A new HTC Android smartphone has leaked, ahead of the handset’s expected debut at MWC 2011 next month. Engadget‘s tipster claims to have spotted the unnamed device in use on the Taipei metro system, with the phone matching up to previously leaked renders. Exact specifications of the device are unknown, but it does appear to have a front-facing camera and touch-sensitive buttons running underneath the display. We’ll know more when Android Community goes to MWC 2011 next month. ) |
Sony PlayStation Suite brings gaming to Android Posted: 27 Jan 2011 01:02 AM PST Sony has outed its new NGP next-generation portable, but the company is also paving the way for the XPERIA Play “PlayStation Phone” with the debut of PlayStation Suite. Promising a range of PlayStation titles to Android 2.3-based devices, the PS Suite will initially offer PSOne classic games, but also a game development environment for coders to create their own titles. Those titles can then be licensed under the new PlayStation Certified program, and then distributed to the new PlayStation Store. Sony describes that as available directly on an Android device itself, which suggests it will be a new app store sitting alongside the Android Market. No official word on when it will launch exactly – Sony only says sometime in 2011 – but given we’re expecting the XPERIA Play to debut at MWC 2011 next month, we’re assuming sooner rather than later. Official Android 3.0 Honeycomb Logo Revealed Posted: 26 Jan 2011 09:39 PM PST So with all of the Honeycomb news announced at CES, and now pouring in with the SDK, one thing was completely looked over. What exactly will be representing Android 3.0 Honeycomb? Well according to some files within the SDK code, we find out that it’s not an actual honeycomb, it’s an Android Bee – Tron style.
Clearly they took some design elements from Tron, but it really does fit well with what we’ve seen with Honeycomb so far. From the ultra-cool clock to the neon accents the Android Honeycomb bee fits in perfectly with the upcoming OS. One thing that certainly disappoints us is that this bee did not show up on Google’s lawn as did the other representations of previous operating systems. Just think: a blue neon-glowing Android Bee lighting up building 44 – how great that would be. What do you think of the official logo? [Via Phandroid] ) |

Motorola Roadster Unboxing and Hands-On Posted: 26 Jan 2011 03:22 PM PST We’ve been sent a rather weird object that you may never have heard of before. It’s called the Motorola Roadster and it’s made to assist you in using your Android phone in your vehicle without paying so much attention to it that you crash. It has the potential to be very, very helpful, or on the other hand very, very difficult to understand. Let’s take a look at what it looks like, first of all. Then we’ll try to turn it on.
The box for this odd little device is very nondescript. It’s obvious that it wasn’t made with the intention of sitting out and about like some higher-end devices you may’ve seen in your day to day. Once you get inside the box, again, it’s basically down to the basics – padding, single instruction booklet, cigarette lighter charger, and the Motorola Roadster itself. It’s taken into consideration that you won’t be using this device without having a phone to pair it with, therefor there’s only the single charger that, unless you’ve got a automobile cigarette lighter in your home, wont be able to utilized outside your car. The device, as you’ll see in the video, appears to be generally intuitive at the outset. It’s about the size of the palm of your hand, a little bit too wide to be carrying with you in your pocket, but just right for hanging from the ceiling of your car. Easy to read buttons along the front and top of the device, and a single switch power along the right side. Behold it. A review of this device will be posted here on Android Community within the next few days after we’ve had a chance to take a peek at it. |
Simultaneous Voice and Data Confirmed for HTC ThunderBolt Posted: 26 Jan 2011 03:09 PM PST Just as we knew from Verizon’s training procedures, the HTC ThunderBolt will be able to support both voice and data at the same time. In a leaked document from Verizon, we are given confirmation that the ThunderBolt will be one of the devices that features simultaneous data and voice.
They go on to mention that this feature isn’t advertised because it’s not common across all of their devices and they’re not in the position to promise it will be consistent with their branding. Hopefully Verizon will feature this functionality in most of their upcoming 4G (and 3G?) phones, we can hope – right? [Via Phandroid] ) |

Android 3.0 SDK Released, Honeycomb Details Revealed Posted: 26 Jan 2011 01:40 PM PST Google has gone and released a non-final preview of the official Android 3.0 SDK. This will allow developers to not only test their applications with the upcoming tablet OS, but it allow them to visually integrate their app with the operating system inheriting the new “Holographic” theme.
It’s worth noting that applications developed with the 3.0 SDK preview can not be eventually published to the Android Market, but the final SDK will be available in the coming weeks. With the SDK we learn a few key details about Honeycomb. 3.0 will feature the system bar at the bottom of the screen that will display global status notifications and an action bar at the top of the screen will be available for application control. Honeycomb will also feature 5 customizable home screens. They each feature a large grid which will allow the placement of widgets, applications, and other shortcuts that we are all used to. The highlights are pretty extensive, so it’s recommended for you to check out the official preview over at the Android developer site. ) |
