US Update: CDMA iPhone, PS3 jailbreak, Ghostbusters 3, Facebook phone Posted: 12 Jan 2011 07:00 PM PST You wanted it and we got it — the latest in tech news, best known as the US Update. In today's update we bring it to you fresh with the Verizon iPhone 4 saga, the latest rumblings on the Samsung Galaxy S2 and Vibrant 4G, hop on over to review Sony's restraining order against Geohot's jailbreak and more. First up the Verizon iPhone 4. The CDMA iPhone 4 coming to stores on February 10th has caused quite a buzz across the inter-webs resulting in the carrier's website coming to a grinding halt. Reminiscent of last year's iPhone 4 announcement which crashed At&t's servers, the Verizon iPhone will certainly help Apple sell over 70 million handsets in 2011. Samsung has two hot new Android handsets set to be unveiled very shortly – the Galaxy S2 and the Vibrant 4G. Both phones feature the new Super AMOLED display seen first on the Verizon LTE smartphone, but the Galaxy S2 is looking while a global launch whereas the Vibrant 4G is set for T-mobile USA. Sony has filed a restraining order against iPhone jailbreaker Geohot and his legion of hackers. The team, responsible for jailbreaking PS3 firmware version 3.55, has managed to restore the install "Other OS" feature which Sony removed from the PS3 following the launch of the PS3 Slim last year. Ghostbusters 3 will ride or die on Bill Murray. According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is ready to pull the plug on the third installment in the franchise if Bill Murray is not signed on to the film. The budget is reportedly $150m so there's plenty of benjamins to be exchanged if he decides to take the role. Last up this morning is news on the rumored Facebook Phone. In a Bluetooth SIG filing, the INQ Cloud Touch, has been revealed to have deep Facebook integration — so deep that "it's designed around the way people naturally communicate and has Facebook built into its core". Since the filing was discovered, INQ has removed all references to Facebook and changed the product name to simply, T2-219U. That wraps up things this fine morning from the states. Thanks for spending your morning with us as we break the headlines fresh off the press from our side of the world. Until tomorrow, this is Nick saying over and out. Related posts: |
Is the Cloud Touch the Facebook phone? Posted: 12 Jan 2011 06:00 PM PST Facebook has gone on record to dismiss the idea of the social network releasing their own smartphone. However, a filing over at the Bluetooth SIG for the INQ Cloud Touch, may suggest otherwise. Is this the rumored Facebook phone we've been waiting for? Filed on December 23rd, the INQ Cloud Touch is described as an Android smartphone built to make messaging faster and smarter. It's designed around the way people naturally communicate and has Facebook built into its core. While INQ is best known for producing handsets with deep social networking integration, this filing suggests the Cloud Touch maybe be more. First reported by Pocketnow, the Cloud Touch is becoming quite an interesting story. INQ has altered the certification record by removing the official name, replacing it with T2-219U, and nixing the last two sentences of the description — effectively ending all references to "Facebook". Either the cat's out of the bag or INQ simply wants to downplay the phone — the expectations of a Facebook phone are certainly off the grid at this point in the smartphone game. So what do you think? Are we looking at the real deal, bonafide, Facebook phone? Is the Cloud Touch a collaboration between the social networking empire and INQ or is this simply just another social networking handset? Sound off. via PocketNow Related posts: |
Ghostbusters 3 rides on Bill Murray’s shoulders? Posted: 12 Jan 2011 05:00 PM PST The future of the Ghostbusters franchise may depend on whether our man, Mr. Bill Murray, decides to partake in the latest installment — Ghostbusters 3. According to Ivan Reitman, director of the first two Ghostbuster movies, all previous rumors are void and Bill Murray has just received the finished script of the film. What's next for Ghostbusters 3? According to Deadline, Sony Pictures is very adamant about whether Bill Murray is involved in Ghostbusters 3. In fact, “Without Murray, the studio absolutely will not make the film.” Deadline is also reporting that Ivan Reitman and Sony Pictures “have no idea if the mercurial Murray will smile on the script they’ve just sent him”. These are some serious implications regarding the future of Ghostbusters. The budget of Ghostbusters 3 is rumored to be $150m and the film would certainly be better received from the 80's generations with Bill Murray involved that without. Assuming Sony Pictures decides to move forward with the project without our main man, could the film still survive? Sound off in the comments and let us know whether or not you'd go out to watch Ghostbusters 3 if Bill Murray is not involved in the project? For the record, we'd probably have to take a pass on this one. There's just something about a sequel losing original actors that doesn't sit well with us. Going way back to a 1985 cult classic, American Ninja, we are still devastated to see Michael Dudikoff replaced by David Bradely in the third installment of the franchise. via Den of Geek Related posts: |
Sony files restraining order against Geohot for PS3 jailbreak Posted: 12 Jan 2011 04:00 PM PST Sony looks to be taking a page from 'Hackers' Dade Murphy, "mess with the best die like the rest". At least in terms of their policy on PS3 jailbreaking. The electronics empire has filed a restraining order against well-known iPhone hacker Geohot and other individuals for allegedly bypassing "effective technological protective measures" in PS3 firmware version 3.55. The purported jailbreak for firmware version 3.55 allows Playstation 3 owners to run custom packages on their console. The ultimate goal of the project being a return of the "Other OS" option, a feature Sony terminated with the launch of the PS3 slim last year. While the feature was certainly welcomed, especially for the Linux folks — there were a number of security risks. Most notable was the ease of backing up both PS3 games as well as Blu-ray movies to the internal hard drive. Today's restraining order is likely the start of a much longer battle between Sony and the hacking community. A modern day tale of the movie 'Hackers' is likely to unfold, though we don't expect to see Angelina Jolie on rollerblades anytime soon. For now Sony is playing the strong arm, hoping that Geohot and his legion of hackers will retreat from the threat of further legal action. For those of you keeping track, Sony was successful at halting the sales of PS3 Jailbreak in Australia last August, but much like the iPhone jailbreaking saga — each firmware update is simply another test for the hacking community. What do you think about the PS3 jailbreak? If the ultimate goal is simply to allow the "Other OS" option to be enabled, wouldn't it be easier if Sony just restored the functionality instead of hiring the legal department to stop a group of hackers from enabling a feature previously available on the console? Sound Off. Via CNet Related posts: |
Samsung Galaxy S2 and Vibrant 4G landing soon? Posted: 12 Jan 2011 03:00 PM PST Two big announcements for Samsung Android fans this afternoon — the Galaxy S2 is rumored to launch at Mobile World Congress next month and the Vibrant 4G is headed to T-mobile USA. We've got the latest on both of these Android superstars so without further adieu, here's what you need to know. First, the Samsung Galaxy S2 rumored to launch at Mobile World Congress next month. The follow up to the Samsung Galaxy line will sport a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display just like Verizon's LTE phone we saw at CES 2011 last week. A dual-core processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and NFC chip have also been confirmed. The second device, the Samsung Vibrant 4G, is headed to T-mobile USA — although a variant could make an appearance abroad. The Vibrant 4G will support T-mobile's faster than fast 21 Mbps network and feature a front-facing camera for video chat (powered by Qik). There's a 4-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen (the same as the Galaxy S2 and Verizon LTE phone), 16GB of internal memory, five megapixel camera with 720P HD video and it runs Android 2.2 Froyo. With the Motorola Atrix and Droid Bionic dominating CES 2011 last week, it seems as though Samsung has a few aces up its sleeve. With Mobile World Congress (MWC) coming up next month we can expect even more handsets from Samsung to be unveiled, but for now we have confirmed two exceptional devices. Deja vu, Verizon website outage following CDMA iPhone 4 announcement Posted: 12 Jan 2011 02:00 PM PST Last June when Apple announced the iPhone 4, At&t's website crashed when a surge of online viewers swamped the servers. This year, the same occurred for Verizon Wireless. With the latest forecast expecting nearly 70 million iPhones sold in 2011, is this the year of the iPhone? Not to say that 2010 was not a solid year for Apple, but Android activations largely clouded the success of Cupertino's wonder phone. While the iPhone 4 still remains the best selling smartphone, Android handsets combine to sell more units. In the U.S., At&t has tied down the iPhone since 2007, but yesterday that all changed with the Verizon iPhone 4 announcement. Just to get an idea of how significant the Verizon iPhone announcement could be for iPhone sales in 2011 we headed to Crackberry.com where a survey is currently underway asking BlackBerry users whether you'll "ditch your BlackBerry or an iPhone 4". The current votes show that 44 percent of CrackBerry.com readers will be leaving RIM for Apple while 56 percent will remain loyal to the Canadian manufacturer. There's certainly no shortage of carriers offering the iPhone 4 globally, but in the US adding Verizon Wireless may have the most significantly impact to Apple's stock price. RBC Capital Markets Managing Director Mike Abramsky has raised his stock target by $40 and predicts Apple sold 16 million devices this quarter. So what do you think? Is Apple poised to dominate the smartphone world in 2011 or will the dozens of Android handsets announced at CES 2011 last week overshadow the California-based company? T-Mobile caves on 500MB data cap for existing customers Posted: 12 Jan 2011 09:11 AM PST T-Mobile has caved. Earlier in the week T-Mobile announced that it would be reducing its fair usage policy on mobile data to 500MB for both new and existing customers. This meant that folks with a T-Mobile contract were risking their mobile data activities being restricted if they exceeded the limit. Now T-Mobile has caved, and revoked the incoming data cap for existing customers.
T-Mobile customers were understandably up in arms about changes to their contracts being made part way through, and to the fact that T-Mobile was still demanding a cancellation fee. One commenter here said: “I’ll be jumping ship the first chance I get…as they’re only giving us 3 weeks notice, they’re breaking their own contract, which gives me an easy way out of their contract early and penalty free. Good riddance!” After the wave of bad press and complaints across Twitter, T-Mobile is revoking the fair usage data cap for existing customers. This means that any new customers and those upgrading to new T-Mobile contracts after 1 February 2011 will still have their mobile activities restricted if they go over the 500MB fair usage limit. Those with contracts taken out any time before then will be able to complete their contract with the existing data cap. Here’s the full T-Mobile statement: "On Monday 10 January 2011 we announced that, in line with the rest of the industry, T-Mobile would be reducing its Fair Use Policy for data usage to 500MB a month for all mobile phone customers. Following a further review of our policy, these changes will now be introduced from 1 February, to new and upgrading customers only – not existing customers. There will be no change to the data packages for existing customers for the duration of their contract and we apologise for any confusion caused. The revision to the Fair Use Policy is designed to ensure an improved quality of service for all mobile internet users.” What do you think about the T-Mobile data cap U-turn? Sony PSP 2 to be unleashed this month Posted: 12 Jan 2011 08:32 AM PST The Sony PSP 2 will be unveiled this month, according to a reliable industry publication. MCV says it’s got the when and where on the long awaited Nintendo 3DS rival, so read on for all the info.
Pencil it in to your diary: games trade magazine MCV UK says sources have confirmed the Sony PSP 2 will be unveiled on 27 January at a press event in Tokyo – by sheer coincidence, a year to the day that the Apple iPad was announced, and barely a month before the Nintendo 3DS goes on sale in the West. No details on the hardware are given, but publishers, the report says, “were informed late last year of the plans”, and are already hard at work on titles for the Sony PSP 2. We’ve contacted SCE for confirmation and while we’ve yet to hear back, we’re treating MCV’s report very seriously indeed as the publication’s sources never miss the mark, and it’s promising more insight on the Sony PSP 2 when the paper version of its magazine goes on sale on Friday. Stay tuned. Image: A concept render of what the Sony PSP 2 could look like. Out TBC | £TBC | Sony (Via MCV UK) Related posts: |
